I don't think we need a gas mask in game. They could add a new resistence to current armor for chemicals or they could apply it to the same damage as acid. That's if we can even resist it via armor (would be cool if armor could have stuff like this built in, similar to how clothes can have items built in, and still have sockets).
What they need to do is fix clothing tapes and armor attachments that have resistence to DoT's (poison, disease, fire, etc.) and make the resistence and duration reducing food work.
If they fix those things the game would be a lot more fun again. As I mentioned earlier, it would be cool if certain mods could be "woven" into the armor, like how tailors can do with clothes that gives mods, in addition to sockets. Resistence to DoT mods would be a great addition to armor.

We'll I'm Carbineer, I want poison protection to be built into the shoes and pants, not helmets.
Which is why I partially oppose gas masks. They will, as I see it, force all Combat Medics to migrate into the CM/Rifleman template.
Someone suggested that chemical resistance should be calculated as an average from all parts of your armor. I think I agree to that.

Gas masks are fine, if nothing else can occupy that headspace (armor helmets) and that they can only be crafted by combat medics, creating some sort of economy for combat medics since there really is none right now.
