Thread: Do you have to be an artisan with surveying skills to be a successful combat medic?

Like the subject says. I was hoping on being a Master CM/Carbineer but if I have to be a surveyor as well then this will just be a huge hinderance to me.... Buying the resources is always an idea but the problem is if they are hard to find then they will cost a fortune! I have scout skills to get the inorganics but to have to train artisan surveying skills is going to put a huge dent into my plans.

My current template would require me to drop all my artisan training. My plan is to rely on resource extractors. You don't need artisan training to operate extractors. All I gotta do is run around untill I come across a farm of resource extractors that are mining the resource type I'm looking for, drop my extractor and pick whatever is the highest concentration.

Another approach would be to ask a friend to survey for the resource you want to aid you in locating specific resources. Or, you can buy the resources as you mentioned.

I am currently a Novice Combat medic and have artisan and scout skills. I plan to drop those at some point andjust purchase the items I need for my meds instaed. I can make the money easy by running missions. However, on my server I have yet to see at least 3 of the rare planet specific meds we need anywhere in a bazaar. Meaning I have to go to Lok, Talus and Dantooine myself and mine/harvest these products on my own because at this time no one is selling them. Until the economy picks up and I start to see some of our rare med components for sale in Bazaar, I wont be dropping artisan anytime soon. Or at the very least, Ill spend a couple days harvesting a huge amount of each to last me for a long time, then drop Artisan.

Random Farming won t work when it ll comes to get High Quality Fungi, Reactive Gas and Radioactive crap, you'll plant harvesters to farm stuff people don t farm. Now, think about going on Yavin to plant a Fiberplast Harvester and if you can t survey you won t see any Harvester fields to give you a hint.

Surveying is sadly a requisite if you don t tag along with someone who can do it for you.

My 2cents.

I have the ability to survey for now and it is extremely helpful. Later on down the line when I get further into the pistoleer tree and am strapped for points, I'll have to decide what to drop. Surveying, sadly, will probably be the first thing to go.

if you surrender out of artisan u know you cant even scan for resources...so you dont even know where to put harvesters cuz you cant see the vein concentrations...you have to complete rely on others...

Yep..I know this. And should that time come, I shall weep and then promptly bug my artisan pals It's a long way off yet, though. I can drop surveying all the way down and keep the novice artisan profession. Just surveying will have to go unfortunately.

for me the concern isnt the 14 points of skill point that survey 4 takes its the 15 that novice artisan takes...

they should just make the ability to use survey devices open to everyone, in that way i can go out and find where the resources are.

then I wouldnt have to rely on other classes just to place my harvester...

Maybe offer to pay some young artisan to scout out a good spot for your harvesters. Heck, I might have to find some good spots and sell the waypoints on the bazaar. I never thought the data selling would be useful, but I guess it could for people with harvesters and no survey skills.

I'm about halfway to master CM, and eventually I"ll have to give up my artisan skills to finish my character build. I've got a couple of friends who survey and sample that have already agreed to help me with my surveying and sampling after I've givin up the artisan skills.

To be a top CM you need to be able to survey and sample (whether you do it yourself or run around with a friend who does it for you) so you can find the best resources for making med/poison/disease packs.

I actually found a fairly decent plan that I'm going to try and implement.

I found an artisan who is A> a good guy and B> likes medics/doctors/combat medics. He's working his way up to some as-yet undecided artisan/combat combo. He's also got all ten of his character lots used. I, on the other hand, never plan on using more than a house and a factory.

So, he scouts out all the specialized materials that I absolutely need, and we drop a harvester there. He pays for the upkeep and takes all of the materials output, except for a percentage, which goes to me. I get materials, he gets more harvesters in action...we both win, and Istill don't need to take any artisan levels.

resource shift and mine out are too annoying to have a 3rd party deal with it 24/7...

better off doing it urself...

having to depend on some1 for your life blood seems silly

I think it's situational, if you have a supplier (artisan friend, PA to fall back to, someone who is willing to mine for you for money) then your time will be better spend earning money and exp doing something else, but if you solo type - artisian is a must as high level medicine requires components that people don't mine regulary (I've yet to see someone selling fungi for example).
