Wouldnt it be nice if we could place atown wall around our towns?

It doesnt even have to be very advanced.

  • 2 types of material: Sandstone and "normal" grey stone.

  • 4types of designs: Straight piece, +-shaped piece, T-shaped pieceand bent corner piece.

  • Size: 1 tile

  • Rotateable like when placing houses.

  • Not taking lots.

  • Only placeable within town limits.

  • Only placeable by Mayor.

Pro's:

  • Add to town feeling.

  • Marks town limits.

  • Can be used as fences, giving players the fell of a yard around their house

Con's:

  • Can be used to box in peoples houses, preventing them from entering their houses. This is allready possible in other ways and should be treated the same as other blockades.

Examples on the diffrent shapes/designs:

www.uo-gold.com/swg/wall1.gif"Straight"

www.uo-gold.com/swg/wall2.gif "+-Shaped"

www.uo-gold.com/swg/wall3.gif"T-shaped"

www.uo-gold.com/swg/wall4.gif"Bent corner shape"

So what do you think? Other ideas what it could be used for?

Maybe, in order to prevent greifing from this, the walls could be automatic depending on city size, making up the border of the city. Maybe have houses have an extra option to have walls or fences with a back door or something. I do like the idea though.

I think its a great idea. I have a good way to prevent greifing also. Heres what you do.

Mayor places the wall, but the wall dosn't show up. (Don't worry my idea isn't done) Then a CSR has to look over the layout and approve it? Anyone think this a safe-proof plan?

As if we dont give CSRs enough to do already. I like the Automatic wall at city limits idea as well as having an option in a house to turn walls on or off. I think something along that lines is the only way it would ever get implmented

Thats fine except you will never get CSRs to take the time to examine walls

My solution to griefing would be to make walls so that no more than 3 wall segments can be connected together, that way it would force a gap to be place, then perhaps things like archways can be placed in the gaps. Normal 'blocking' rules would apply (aka no blocking of content, it must be possible to enter the area (no one says it has to be easy tho). City walls would be a lower cost item that a mayor could place, and they are funded by city taxes (please please fix sales taxes!!!).

They wpuld be a city structure only (no surrounding a detachment HQ in the field w/ walls)

I would say make walls destructible but they would get greifed as everybody tries to blow them up.

But I would rather see city walls than see 500 square meters of Naboo taken up by a fort made of interlocked houses

I think they should be at the borders of the city also, the only issue with this is that the cities borders expand and detract depending on the population. Maybe it should be only available at the highest city level, and if the city goes down a level then the wall disappears automatically. Master Politician should be the one to place it, and he can place as many gates as necessary. I think adding paved roads would also be a plus and make it look like a space age city instead of a village from Everquest or something. It would be cool to add custom flags and other decorations on the walls, and maybe even place guard towers.

Lets say if you get walls at Level 3 and then move to level four, the walls would just move farther out while the existing ones would poof.

Great idea, but not a new one. In fact, the Devs already thought of it

You were supposed to be able to turn a city into a giant equivalent of a factional base, Walls, turrets, guards, etc. They ditched the idea some where along the way. the only thing left of this concept is the "stronghold" specialization.

the only issue I see with this is if there are houses already in that are when it expands then what do you do. I just figured at the highest level it's at it's max, and your not going any further out, and it also makes sense from a city planning perspective because you don't have to worry about building something beyond the wall that may later be covered by the wall.

Well, either that or if the city downsizes from 4 to 3, then the walls move, but if the wall is about to intersect another structure, it goes around that structure with a 4 tile space around it(leaving enough room to get out of your house). As to archways, I think that Master Polotician makes it a great idea.

After actually thinking about this in more detail, the walls could play havoc if you put a base inside a city, then the walls and archways/entry points could be more strategic as well.

Im just replying to the last post in the thread, trying to reply to all above given input...

yes, the major problem is griefing, but as I said above that should be handled like other kinds of griefing. Contact CSR and they fix it.

Boxing someones house in with walls would be the major missuse of a wall, but that can be done with houses allready. Solution: If someone wall your house in, just contact CSR and they'll remove (atleast) one segment of the wall so you can get in. Im quite sure they´d do the same if someone boxed your house in with houses. Likewise walling the whole town in should not be allowed, atleast one entrypoint should be a avalable (no matter if the town has a shuttleport or not).

The wall segments should only be destroyable by the mayor of the town. Otherwise you´ll have griefers blowing up your walls all the time. And we do have enough of those allready...

To keep the number of walls down there could be a upkeep cost, not too much though, A complete town wall around a size 5 town would probably be built by a few thousand segments... so the upkeep shouldnt be more than 5 or 1o credits per segment and week.

As for limiting wall placement to a certain town size or skill level. I dont like that part, it should be placable in any town, by any mayor...

The wall segments shuld be craftable by architects in my opinion. That´d help boost player interaction.

Concerning town walls only being placed within town limits and shrinking town size. Well, if a town shrink and there are wall segments outside the new town limit the mayor should be told (ingame mail or something) and have 48 hours to redeed the walls. 48 hours and 1 minute after the wall segmentfind itselfoutside a citywall it goes *poof* and is lost.

Arches, a nice idea. Wasnt thinking of it myself but I like it. Gives the mayor more mays to decorate his town...
