Thread: New idea for cities.
Well, personally I don't find this appealing at all. Hard to list all the things about player cities that would be lost with something like this. But, I will try..
1. Lost sales from passing potential customers.
2. Loss of residents because of the added difficulty of instancing in.
3. No more missions from the city, who in the heck is gonna instance in and out for missioning?
4. No point in decorating the city or your houses, no one will want to return home to their house because of having to go into the instance.
5. No more parties, PVP raids and an eventual further collapse of the social structure of the dang galaxy, because people won't be visiting in the player cities, the socializing is practically dead in the major NPC cities.
Sorry that you hate to navigate our city structures. But most social people enjoy passing through our cities and or the ease of shopping the Galaxies offer now. SWG is a social game, player cities, guildsand grouping are the last social situations left in the game. Player cities would NOT survive being placed behind instance 1-10, nor would the community of social people appreciate it. Thank you.

I personally hate the fact that there are player cities literally covering planets. You can't go anywhere without having to dodge through buildings. Not to mention spawns inside ofthe inability to mine within player city limits.

Make player cities instanced locations. Of course there would be only one instance of each city. They will still occupy the "area" where they are placed so no other city could be placed there. To get there you would have to either travel by shuttle or travel to the main location of the city where a "beacon" or maybe the town hall only will be visibile. At this beacon you will have the ability to enter the city. To leave the city just move outside of the current city limits where you will be placed back on the normal map.
Faction bases will appear in both the city and normal map if placed within city limits if not only on normal map. They will only be attackable from the normal map. The bonus for city defence if the city has such will be given to all players within a certain distance of the faction base extending just a little outside of turrent range.
I agree that instanced cities are a bad idea. As for why I will need to tell a little story about the city I have the privilege of over seeing.
My city is located on talus near a creek. This creek has to soft rolling hills on either side of it. The city hall is located on the east side facing said creek. From the creek to city hall there are two lines for medium houses that face each other with a row of small parks and the bank in the middle. From the back side of these medium houses there is a row of small houses all facing the creek. All but two of these small houses are the same style and color. Before the time we where able to place a shuttle we of course had to drive the 2 - 3 km from the imp out post to get home. Today make that same drive not to save a few hundred credits but to come over that eastern hill and watch the city appear before me. That view is one of the last few joys for me.
I was not the one to design this city. The guy that did left the game over a year ago due to personal reasons, for what ever reason he left me in charge. by some random act he log in last week for the last time to come home to the city, that when he left was a level 2, to find it a level 5 metropolis. Well long story short he was in contact with me by the end of the day and the shock and awe of see his dream fulfilled made every credit I spent to make it happen worth while.
The point is if my city was instanced that view would be gone. All that time and effort would be nearly wasted, and I would have a very hard time protecting or city mascot a turtor.

p.s. I am at work and if requested I can provide a way point later for those that would like to stop by, since I don’t posses the words to do this city justice.

You said this better than I would have. I'm not a mayor, but the experience driving over a hill and seeing a city spread out is remarkable, to say the least.

While there is a problem with aggro mobs inside buildings, there is no urban sprawl "all over' the planet.
i dunno what server U play on but on my server and eveyone ive played on there is pointless SPRAWL everywhere its sickining and could easly be solved by either re instituteing structure destruction after 0 maint for a certain time frame or simpley auto packin all structutures once a char is inactive for a certain time frame
