Thread: Estates!

I had this idea for Estates.

Basically, the longer your house stands in an area that's in the wilderness (a signifigant distance away from no npc/player city) and with nobody else's house around it (although you can have houses you placed around it), the more it gets "estate points". As you accumulate these points, you gain an ever increasing radius (up to 50m maybe) in which you can place decorations such as gardens, statues, fountains, etc.

The estate will be one particular building but you can "absorb" buildings that you have placed into the estate package as long as they're within 20m or so of the main building. This means that the perimeter extends from those smaller buildings just as it would the large one.

However, as the size of your estate increases, the maintence costs increase also. This goes for all buildings in the estate region. At the maximum level, you'll be shelling out much more than normal to keep your estate standing. When you run out of maint on your estate, you progressively lose estate perks until you're back to a normal house.

This makes it so that only active players can maintain an estate. It also makes it so that running an estate is no small task, but it provides a stunning result that can show how wealthy/stylish you are.

What do you think?

EDIT: Just to clarify, the extra estate maint funds will not be pulled from your bank, so you must be watching your maint to keep your estate running.

This sounds really interesting. What about walls. I have windered about wall around player cities.....like the npc ones. Just wondering. I do like the estate ideas......after they clean up the abandoned housing problem.

sounds an aweful lot like a player city . . . just for the individual. Such as it would have alot of the same problems . . .

like someone placing a harvestor just outside your land to keep you from upgrading,

Player City = Shuttleports, garages, trainers, zoning, etc.

Estates = A ring (at max 50m) in which you can place decorations.

They're only similar in that you can place decorations in them. Since the radius is so small, people would have to work blazingly quick to grief you with a harvester (wherein a city, you have a long time.)

Actually i think they are very similar. Both are peices of property that increase in size over time (under certain circumstances), Both allow a single person to decorate the land (which BTW a mayor actuallyhas a skill treefor placing decorations) and/or place other structures (in the estate case, otherbuildings owned by the player), and both have a maintenance which increases dependant on the size of the property.

I'm not saying that its a bad idea . . . infact beingsimilar to a player city may makesomething like this more likely to happen. Maybe even give architechs a new building to use as the center of the estate.

I guess, although the "place other structures" is something you can do already (you can go out and drop a large house and two small houses right next to it if you wish.)

I also very much like the idea of making a new building which is the center of the estate. That would be very nice.

I think that would be awesome. I have been a home decorator for quite awhile and would love to be able to put something outside a house, even if its just on the porch.

The isolation idea is probably a bad one. What happens when someone moves in next to your or worse someone establishes a player city around you. You'll lose all those benefits if they rely on you being isolated.

It's probably a better idea just to create new housing designs with bigger footprints and courtyards, like those Naboo structures that spawn with monks.

Nah, you keep your stuff. I might not have phrased it properly. Basically, the isolation (which isn't incredibly far) is created to ensure you don't infringe on anyone already living in that region. If you're already an Estate and someone moves in near you or a player city is built around you, you keep your perks.

EDIT: The idea I had in mind were those old-style mansions done by aristocrats, often placed in the middle of a countryside somewhere and somewhat removed from the towns. The place would be lavishly designed to reflect the wealth of the owner, and would be a great place for parties or events. It would also allow for a very impressive scene, as you drive closer to the estate and see the full sprawl. While it's not a gigantic thing, it's certainly signifigant for one person's house, and takes signifigant investment by that person (at least five lots, maybe more, along with raised maintence costs... and no pulling estate maint from your bank, so you'd have to make sure you always had maint in it.)
