Thread: Vendor update from Tiggs: Galaxy wide search and delivery

Well, this may turn into the biggest case of "good news / bad news" ever:

I've got some reservations, although they may get cleared up by later additions to this initial proposal (it's not set in stone yet, folks).

  • Nowhere is any Merchant/Artisan skill requirement mentioned for this ability. Personally, I think it should sit squarely in Master Merchant. Even Advertising IV is a bit too light on skill points for this wide of a market.

  • Instant delivery seems like a bad idea.

    • Is there a distance limit? Instant delivery from vendors "in this region" might be a good addition, but getting an instant delivery to my inventory on Naboo from a vendor on Talus just doesn't sit right with me.

    • Is there a cost to the customer for the delivery (additional credit sink)? Does this cost depend on distance?

    • Chef foods have a good "impulse buy" market. Someone comes in for Brandy/Ahrisa/Whatever, and gets intriguedby the Parwan Nutricake you have for sale. With instant delivery, we lose that.

  • Unless this comes with a revamp to the market categories or sorting across multiple pages, things are going to be a mess. It's hard enough trying to find things like new loot components in "Generic Items" on the bazaar with a galaxy wide search, it'll be even worse with player vendors. Although, I have to admit, I may finally be able to track down some blank canvas and paint dispensers to use up some picture printers I've accumulated.

  • There's a greater possibility of "subsidized chefs" (get provided with meats/resources/tissues cheap or free by a PA) squeezing out more solo-oriented crafters with higher costs. Although small business can seem to compete with Wal-mart, maybe there's hope.

My personal opinion is that this is great, but the initial stuff is just too much. I think for anything beyond "This region", you only get item details and price. You can buy it, but it works like buying from another city's bazaar: you get an email with the waypoint and have to go pick it up. One thing to be careful of with this, though, is that it might lead to people putting desirable items up for sale for a cheap price, then slapping a 10k entry fee on their house. To combat this, allow "retrieve this item" from any vendor within a region, not necessarily the particular one you bought it from.

yes and just think of how great it will be that everyone no longer travels to your shop,

that only the lowest sellers get sales

that the impulse buys from browseing a vendor are gone

that player cities that are clinging to exist via their vendors are no longer visited...

definatly not sitting well with me

I am definitely NOT liking this.

1- So much for working hard making our mall a nice place to visit.

2- So much for making my prices reasonable but not so low I take almost a loss.

3- So much for the new merchants/crafters who are trying just to build themselves up.

4- So much for the chefs who haven't been able to hit 12 point yet and wont be able to compete.

5- So much for shuttleport fees helpping a town who relies on their malls.

HERE COME THE PRICE WARS> WELCOME TO WALMART

This stinks. It's as simple as that.

With all the strides the devs were making in adding useful, fun things to the game and fixing bugs, it seems like a huge leap in the wrong direction to be stepping on the toes of the hard working crafters that don't have 5 tents on every planet and don't have 18 hours a day to sit and craft their wares to undercut everybody else. What are they hoping to accomplish here aside from irritating and alienating a large portion of the crafting community?

crap maybe i'll sell all my chef stuff now, my profit margin gets lower by the month, and this will just drive it down more, even though i'm prolly one of the top 5 chefs on the server

I pride myself on making available a large selection and on being consistently stocked. I believe that's why people come to my shop and why they come back. I believe they are impressed when they open up my vendor menu and see all the stuff I have.

If such changes to shopping were to be made, why should I bother anymore? All my hard work would be lost in a huge listing that is dry and souless. No one would appreciate anymore how hard it is to keep a well-stocked vendor.

The only driving force of the economy of things would be low prices. Service, location, stock, immersiveness would all be irrelevant. Welcome to extreme mediocrity. Laziness would be insanely profitable. Outstanding service would be valueless.

From Tiggs:

We are going to change the auto-retrieve items when items are purchased from a remote vendor/bazaar. Buyers will have to travel to the vendor/bazaar to pick the item up.

Ok, with that being adjusted, what else do you think? The possibility does still exist for "remote buy then, whoops, shop has 50k entry fee" or (even worse) you buy from a vendor that has banned you from the shop. But I'm bringing over a few ideas I've sifted to the devs:

  • Add any building entry fee to the item, either as a separate item in the details or added to the sale price

  • Some "escrow" service where the item gets relisted (and credits reimbursed) if not picked up in a certain amount of time.

  • An "return policy" option on items in your available items, that reimburses your credits and puts the item back up for sale.

  • Let merchant reputation deal with it, although there always seems to be a pool of "suckers" that unscrupulous merchants can scam.

Oh, and I'm still a little wary about the "view all sales from player vendors". I'm hoping we can push for some limit on PC vendors' display separate from the galaxy-wide advertising. Vendors in malls or sales-oriented cities might want a regional view from all the vendors. If I could set up a vendor to "push" to the galaxy market listing but only "pull" from my own stock, that'd be my preference.

This is a horrible idea. I expound upon this a little ways down.

I like to have stuff available at my shop since I'm charging WAY less than the competition, think 45k a crate of +390 45m30s brandy and 7500 a crate of ahrisa with similar stats. Everyone else on the serverI know of ischarging 70k+ for these items. I'm by no means a big crafter sinceI only make about 500k a week but this is insane, the way prices are going to be undercut will be terrible, I'm operating barely above cost as it is. We'll lose a majority of our crafters. Sure tissues will drop in price but our prices have to drop as much as the lowest person offering similar stats or you simply won't sell anything and make any profit to afford your housemaintenance, harvesters or vendors.

The brandy example:

The typical crate of BSNs on Naritus is 37.5k (I don't pay nearly that much), ifI paid that much i'd be making 7,500 creds above that crate of additives, not to mention all the rest that goes into it and we all know about getting trim made, another 5k a crate, then you have your actual resources...it gets close to 0 profit real quick or in some cases you'd be working at a loss and that isn't going to happen for people that are in it to make creds and not just offer decently priced foods to friends and people who wander in and make the EFFORT to hunt for bargains.

Ahrisa, plain and simple, I would control the market ifI actually advertised 7500 creds per crate of BE Ahrisa. This Galaxy-wide advertising does just that.

I don't want to do that to anyone but I'm not going to raise my prices either since I don't want a large amount of profit, I'm just trying to provide an alternative to the higher priced chefs I've seen crop up (I've had a chef since launch).Ikept myper use system of pricing through the chef changes and I want to keep it intact, not change itso that I don't get slandered off the server or griefed into cancelling that account, I LOVE food.

Sure you might say, "So, don't place your vendor on the galaxy wide market." Yes, I could do that but then how many people are just too lazy to go looking? A whole lot of people are and that would really reduce the incentive to go looking for better prices that aren't listed. Nearly everyone just shops SC anyway...I'm not located there, I'm one of those people that only has vendors in PCs that have great atmospheres and nice people.

In closing, these changes will destroy the market and cause the game to malfunction as a player run economy, people will be jumping out of windows!
