Thread: any other old school chefs disappointed at high number of new ones?
I dont think Im really that "old school" so Im not sure I should even comment. I took chef up within the first week of game release and got half way through the profession before I dropped it and mastered tailor (at that point, with one account, I could only do one cratfing profession). I ended up with a second account and mastered chef just before Christmas.
Yes, it saddens me to see an influx of "quick buck" chefs, particularly when I get numerous tells or mails in game which go along the lines of... "hey I dont have great surveying skills, canyou just send me the waypoint to the fruit and berries you are digging up atm?!?!?!"
But as Kriles pointed out, new revamp... new people trying the profession. There has always been a flavor of the month profession in SWG and chefs were it. The market is starting to stabilise now though... the demand for brandy which was insane during the first couple of weeks is starting to calm and prices have fallen (at least on Eclipse) to a more sensible and stable level. Hopefully, this will cause many of the people who saw chef as a goldmine profession to wander off and master something else, droid engineer perhaps? ![]()
Also to be honest, how many people do you see advertising nothing but brandy (maybe canapes). The effort which is required to provide a nice stock level over many different products is huge and chefs are going to have to be prepared to do this to continue to compete. Brandy lasts people a long time, repeat custom happens but slowly and those customers will start looking for a good stat and well priced brandy, rather than the "anything they could get hold of" attitude immediatly after release.
I dont know the situation on other servers, but on Eclipse a couple of people who just appeared post revamp are just starting to drop chef. Out of all those that did rapidly appear, a couple certainly are nice peeps who genuinely like their profession and I truely hope they stay with chefing for the long term because sometimes I like to have someone to talk chef stuff with.
Im sure the market will stabilise and a lot of the people just in it for the cash will leave the profession, I doubt we will ever be the really small bunch which we were a few months back but thats not necessarily a bad thing
Kind Regards,
Tally, Master Chef of Eclipse
So while I'm not an "old school chef" don't discount the hard work & enthusiasm I'm putting into the profession. I plan to make a LOT more than just brandy. I sure as hell am not going into it for the money (have plenty of that already). I actually think it's a very cool profession!! But boy do I have a lot to learn. lol
I do understand where you're coming from tho since my other character is an "old school smuggler" and has been one since the start of the game. And we haven't had the revamp yet that chefs were lucky to get. But please don't assume that ALL new chefs are just in it for the buck or are just passing thru.

As in any profession, there are a variety of reasons that people pick up something new. In my particular case I have a second account & tho I love my first character I wanted to try something different. I was playing my second character as a traditional fighter type & bored to tears killing everything. Our guild chef was being overworked & unable to play as much as before. Another old school chef on our planet also was quitting & there was a real need for another master chef and to be honest the profession had always interested me so I started talking to our guild chef about it. The more we talked, the more interested I became & now I really want to be one so I'm working HARD & without a macro to become a master chef. I also will be getting most of my own resources. I've been in the resource gathering profession since the beginning of the game so that's old hat to me & easy.

Wahoo, MagnaVVV is a chef! (Remember you from the pre beta forums).
Anyway, I can see where he is coming from, and it is othing personal against any of the new chefs. Before the revamp we have a very small community of chefs, and it was a somewhat a tight nit group. With all the new chefs coming in, we are loosing that small town feeling. This is nothing personal against any chefs coming in...just sad that the we are loosing some of the community feeling we had before.
In the meantime I'll enjoy both of my characters equally. I do have to say that I'm really enjoying reading the Chef Forum & that you guys have some very informative posts & links here. I have SO much to learn yet. Merl, Master Chef on Wanderhome, is my mentor & has been a big help too. I'm going slower up the chef tree since I'm one of those rare people that's against macros. Oh well, I'll get there!!

Please dont get any of us wrong, Im fairly sure most "old school" / "long term" chefs are pleased to have new people on board who care about the profession and show enthusiasm for the foods. As I mentioned in my post, Ive met a couple of new chefs on Eclipse recently who are really nice people and obviously enjoy their profession.
The problem is more with the truck load of other chefs who dont care one bit about chefing and probably have little idea to make anything other than brandy. These are the people who master in a few hours with the help of a nifty macro and mass produce brandy in the hope to make a fast buck from chefing. They dont really care about the food and drink economy on the servers, most of them dont intend to stick around long term so any damage they cause wouldnt matter anyway. Some of them are rude enough to expect established chefs to even hunt out their resources for them and just send them a waypoint so they can place their harvesters.
The revamp breathed some life into chefing and with it some new people. Some of these people are great and enjoy the profession (as it seems you do). Some what to use it to make as much money as they can, as fast as they can then dash out of the side door to flood someone elses professions ![]()
Anyway, didnt mean to offend people, not all of the new chefs are the fast buck chefs, unfortunatly it seems many are and it tends to make people defensive. The chef boards are a nice place and you nearly always find someone willing to help you out with any problems etc, people just want to protect that atmosphere ![]()
Kind Regards,
Tally, Master Chef of Eclipse
p.s. you can bet the fast buck chefs are the ones starting threads called "HOW DO I MASTER FAST?!?!?!?!?111111"

You are the minority, most just pick up chef because they saw it was being revamped and thought "wow chef is going to be fixed and I will be able to make a killing at it." Others have picked it up since the patch so they can sell 40 crates of brandy and make 10million profit in 1 week. (the ones that are WAY overpricing it) I respect someone such as yourself, I fall into that category myself except I made master in November.
The one thing I disagree with you on though is the revamp that chefs were lucky to get. Yes some of it is great, but the fun is gone from the chef profession with this revamp. Waiting on factories for1 week, turning into a master logistian and master assembler of flora is not my idea of fun. Chef had a lot of borked schematics before the patch, but the ones we had about 10 solid ones thatwere great and were a lot more fun to make. Doing 8 factories runs for any BE enhanced drink is no fun, nor is making items that are only half as good as they could be. Throw in the experimentation change and now what little fun was left is completely gone.
