When you feed them your pets will eat the first thing they find in your inventory, be it bofa treats, aircake, or muon gold.
So, there are several techniques to avoid them doing drugs that won't help them anyway. One is the backpack method already mentioned. Another is to organize your inventory so that the stuff you don't want them to eat is behind the stuff you do want them to eat. The only problem with this strategy is it takes constant micromanagement of your inventory to make sure they're chomping down on travel biscuits and not going after the thruster head or some other expensive consumable. A third technique is to put the food and drug for your consumption in a cargo pocket or satchel in your regular inventory; the routine that determines what the pet eats will ignore those containers, like the backpack, and go to whatever food you've left unguarded in your inventory.
I've put all the food or spice for my consumption in a satchel in my backpack, and then also have a crate of bofa in the backpack. When I need food for the kids, I extract it from the crate in my backpack and it automatically is placed in my main inventory, where if I hit feed on the radial menu, it will be given to the pet. The only problem, and it's minor, is that depending upon the size of the stack, I'll have to go back into the backpack to take another bofa stack out every so often.
This is preferable to having the pet consume some expensive food or spice that you were counting on to give you a buff.

It only wants food if it has wounds. And I have had some experiece that using my pet a little bit will speed up growth the adult to around 4 days.

I just /forage for food on the spot when one of my pets needs to eat. That way I don't have to carry any with me. I used to carry a crate of food for them though. I guess either way works well.

you only need to feed pets to heal wounds (black marks) to their red or green bars, and they'll let you know when theyre hungry.
theyre growing rate from baby to adult is 7 days, assuming that you log in at least once every day.

Feeding pets completelyheals health (and i think action if they are still in effect) wounds. So you only need to feed them when wounded and they will also eat anything you can (but not drinks). Also even though they can eat health/stat buffing foods like synthsteak they will not recive any benifits from it. However their are a few buffingfoods that are made for pets specifically like bofa treats. If you have any questions about those please direct them to the chef fourm because they are the ones that make them.
