Thread: Chef buffs are fine. Duration should be x10

Don't even try to tell me I can't argue my opinions, or that my opinions don't count. Don't you dare.

: leaves his computer to calm down a bit....:

As correspondent I send in a report and try to keep my biases out of it. That is why in the thread concerning the reports I discuss and explain, butI try to do more listening and try to include as many view points as possible in the report including my own.

But if you are going to tell me that I can't share my opinion on the boards, that is BS. If you want to critisize my reports, that is one thing. If you want to tell me that I shouldn't argue my opinion on issues that I will think improve the profession, you can go to hell.

Just because SirVimes is the correspondent doesnt mean he isn't allowed to have opinions on things.

Check my thread for a more complete idea. Chef buffs are not in any order and if you put a "0" at the end of all the durations you would still have some Domestic foods being better than some Novice Chef foods and some lower level chef foods being better than some master chef foods.

And you'd still have the issue there picking the "Entree" line or the "Dessert" line is a case of flipping a quarter, because they both pretty much just buff random stats for random durations.

Chef needs a serious looking at, the whole cookbook needs to be reorganized and redone so that Entrees are distinctly different from Desserts which are distinctly different from Mixology and so that a Master Chef does not totally overwrite everything that can be produced by a Novice Chef.

Adding a 0 to all durations would be an easy fix, it would not be a good fix.

Thank you.

And I apologize for getting a bit mad. It has been one of those days.

"Adding a 0 to all durations would be an easy fix, it would not be a good fix."

Well, first of all adding 0s is an over-simplification of what needs to be done...and I think it would be more accurate to say that increasing durations would part of the fix, but not the complete fix.

I totally agree that duration should be dramatically increased. Food fills up our inventory as it is, and eating new food every 5 minutes is impractical. Sure, stacking would help, but I like the fantasy of eating a few good meals a day to stay continually buffed and then using something like spice for that emergency situation (if you're willing to accept the repurcusions).

I don't think many of the current buffs would be that bad if this change was done. Even +60 to stamina (wastril bread) is nothing to laugh at if it lasts for an hour. I've been checking out the sunburn and I think it's kind of ridiculously strong hehe.I do think that the tree would still be unbalanced in terms of how buffs compare to each other at different levels in the chef tree and between chef & artisan.

SirVimes: Nothing on these boards is worth getting mad over

Its totally up to you how you handle your correspondant role. I stated my concern that your posting of strong personal opinion concerns me with how legitimately you will reasonably voice the opinion of the community.

It was feedback, not a flame. Big difference.

Other correspondants do voice their opinion, but I see a much greater effort by them toseperate personal opinion with the community advocate role, and they typically do not push personal opinion nearly so hard.

Just my 2 cents, don't take offense.

Read my correspondent reports that I will keep floating up on top. If you see me being biased in one way or the other let me know (although it is difficult to try to get everybody's opinion). Please feel free to tell me if you think I am being overly biased one way or the other. The correspondent report, I feel, should reflect this community and I will do the very best do that. I still believe that the bazaars should be in the top 5,and is more important than factories. But the community disagrees with me, so bazaars come out and factories goes in.

Ourside the report...I like debating. And that, in part,is what I come to these boards for. If I couldn't do that...then I would probably stop coming to these boards.

If food buffs are short and powerful and have no side effects, why would anyone use spice? They wouldn't.Changing food like that just eliminates a big part of the Smuggler profession. Robbing Peter to pay Paul isn't a good approach. And SirVimes is right: Smugglers concerns>chef concerns (for now, anyway).

Sorry but I completely disagree with you both. Long running low stat enhancing Chef buffs do NOTHING to increase the viability of the class.

So instead of having lame buffs that last a fairly short period of time, so the 3 people on the server that use Chef food at least have to return and buy some more with some frequency, you want to dramatically increase the duration of the lame buff, so those 3 people can go longer before they have to purchase your food again.

No sorry uh uh that don't cut it.

The buffs them selves need to be PUMPED, so results oriented people look at the stats and go WOW, I want some of that.

The DURATION gentleman is not nearly as important AS LONG AS it lasts long enough to get through a long encounter (10 to 30 min is my ideal range for Chef buff duration).

The Power Gamers will stock up on HUGE quantities of high buff chef food if it meets those criteria, so they can chow down before every major encounter.

That folks, is who we want as our customer. They are rich, they are interested in maxing the effectiveness of their character, and they won't care about shorter durations if the end result is that they are much more effective during a fight than they are without our food.

We want the average knowledgeable gamer to know that if I get into a fight with my hated foe of the opposing faction, and he has Chef buffs on and I don't, he will win no doubt. THAT knowledge will drive our business into viability. The current state of buffs do NOT do this.

Thats my 2 cents. Signing out...

Iron_Chef I disagree. Gamers (at least those concerned enough about stats to used buffs in the first place) will recognize that Player + food buffs + spice buffs > Player + food/spice alone.

The effect stack. Gamers will always migrate to the most effective combination of buffs they can get, therefore there will be market for both.

As I mentioned in the sticky thread, I think duration is the key too. Since food can stack, and since we do get food that without experimentation buffs HAM nicely (flameout anyone ?), I think we're ok. What's cool with food and drinks is that you can custom your buffs with the right foods. Since they stack, you can make your menu and stick with it, or adapt it. The main problem is that the effect of your menu runs out before you can eat another one. So either you can eat more as soon as the buff wears out, either the food lasts longer than filling.

I'll try an hypothetical menu of a Master Chef. I'll consider that you can eat 3 foods, and 3 drinks before you are filled. I'll also consider that the Master Chef will have experimented a lot to raise buffs, and that it would raise the buffs by 250% (I can double my buffs with 5 exper. points). And here is what you can already get.

Thakitilo : Health 375, Str 375, Con 375
2 Citros Snowcake : Health -80 Action 800 (I counted both, and debuffs are usualy reduces by exper.)
2 Flameouts : Health 3000 Mind -200 Foc -200 Will -200
1 Bespin Port : Mind 435.

Total : Health 3295, Str 375, Con 375, Action 800, Mind 245, Foc -200, Will -200.

Now I think this is quite good, and it's with our current food. I ruled out Sunburn cause it's an obvious missplacement. If those buffs last 10 mins, and you can retake them as soon as they wear out, I think your doing ok. Obviously this menu as a big weakness in Mind and it's secondary attributes. But you could do another one that's more balanced, giving less health, or whatever.

If Master Chefs would take time to actually try to make such a menu and tell us if those numbers I kind of made up are possible to attain, we'd know with facts if it can work. Then all the devs need to do really is make the buffs grow more coherently in the skill tree and boost the duration of the food. Maybe not extra long, but between 8 and 20 minutes seems good for me.

I absolutely disaggre! it should be the other way around multiply buffs by 10 not the duration! Someone can keep eating to keep the buffs and thats what you need to fight the tough mobs not the duration!
