"Well, you need two branches in Chef as well, but don't forget what a Chef needs for production comapred to a BE. You will need to harvest Flora, Gemstone, Meat, Milk, Gas, and of course you will need to pick up some tailor for Trim."

The number of skill points is a lot less for me than it would be for you but that's really not the issue. The time for me to become a chef dabbler would be less than for you to take up BE. Also, I have to harvest flora, meat, milk and gas already for the products I make. I also have to gather fish and eggs. Aquiring resources is nothing new to a bio-engineer. As for trim I'll just ask a tailor for a schematic. I should be able to get one for free since schematics have no value. Right?

"I'm not really trying to start an argument or anything, but you can't really compare a "hybrid" crafting profession to a "true" crafting profession."

I'm not sure I understand the "hybrid" versus "true" crafting profession. Are you saying bio-engineers are not true crafters? If you are saying this, what are you basing this on, the number of factories you own? There was a time not so long ago when every product a bio-engineer made had to be crafted by hand. No item could be run in a factory. Regardless, every product a bio-engineer sells is crafted.

Animals can not be run in a factory. They must be made by hand. To make a high end animal you will have to generationalize a number of clones. This takes a lot of time, resources, patients, and note taking. You can not make animals by dumping resources in a factory and pushing the start button.

Bio-engineers are not crafters. We're artists.

I agree most BE's are not going to pick up chef (some already have). I agree most chefs are not going to pick up BE if they haven't already. I wouldn't get into the chef business to make money. I do that already with BE. I'd just make brandy from time to time so I can sample those peskymutant rancors. I'd be saving myself a cool 350K.

Unless some sort of understanding can be made between our two professions I can see bio-engineers not bothering with chef tissues at all. If its not worth my time why bother with it?

Kind of interesting today

I negotiated with a tailor as follows:

Me: Can you supply me with some crates of trim please?

Tailor: Sorry no but I can do you a schematic

Me: OK cool. I'll be making some brandy so if you like I'll give you some in return for the schematic

Tailor: No way, it's not worth that, lol

Som inconclusive reverse bartering (take it please, no no it's no trouble) followed with me agreeing in the end to get back in touch when I start my run

Alright, as a Master BE/Master Chef I hope to offer a little insight. I've been a Master BE for a very, very long time, and enjoy greatly all aspects of the class. I will say for the record that "crafting" creatures is 100 times more demanding and challenging than throwing some berries and fruit in a factory for brandy. Going out to find just the "right" DNA combinations from uncommon creature spawns is a real pain, thus the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment when you create that uber creature.

That having been said, the tissues for Chef food is very tough on the BE. The amount of high quality meat alone is a chore. The BE mostly likely lacks a whole lot of combat skills. I myself have none: Scout, Medic, Artisan, Merchant, BE, Chef. I rely on my network of professional hunters to gather the meat for me. I buy the meat that I use for additives and tissues of any kind. Good meat is expensive and usually hard to get. For example the 20k of meat I just ran for heavy nutrition additives came from an uber spawn of yavinian reptile meat... That is a TON of spined pucs, the only creature that gives yavinian reptile meat.

To break BE tissues down to "its only a factory run" is simply uninformed. That is why I have stopped making additives for chefs who ask. They scoff at the price and I am only charging 1cpu over what Ipaid for the meat. I will make a schem for anyone who asks because they themselves gather the meat.

The Chef class is more demanding on the mined resource aspect and it takes much more TIME to make a good finished product, so I don't mean to take anything away from a class in which I am a Master in. But Chefs need to understand the demands on the BE, especially one who is not tissue centered to begin with.

See this is where I do have to disagree. I was not referring to the amount of time it would necessarily take to "get there", but what it would take to get there and be able to produce decent goods. When you look at BE schematics versus chef schematics, the variey of necessary components is greater (when not including DNA based schems of course). There fore, the resource you have gatehred as a BE are only a small subset of what decent chef needs to produce his stock. Understand I am not saying its impossible, just that I already gather 99% of what a BE needs for crafting. To my knowledge, I dont think a BE needs tatooine tubers or hurlothrombic gas for anything. So in that sense, I completely disagree that you it would take less "time to become a chef dabbler would be less than for you to take up BE", especially if I am just picking up BE for tissues. After all, if you have the ingredients already....for a BE it is just *one factory run*.

"I'm not sure I understand the "hybrid" versus "true" crafting profession"

I admit that was abit confusing. I meant BE as a crafter is different than the tradidtional crafter profession. Chef, Weaponsmit, Architect, Tailor, etc produce basically onetype of product (armor, weapons, food, etc) from harvested goods. BEs do that too, but they also create pets from DNA...which of course is a different type of crafting. A BE just doesn't do "one thing", but several (Pets, Supplements, and Stims).

I am not trying to de-value the BE profession at all, just put into perspective the time involved. The poster right above this says it well:

"The Chef class is more demanding on the mined resource aspect and it takes much more TIME to make a good finished product, so I don't mean to take anything away from a class in which I am a Master in. But Chefs need to understand the demands on the BE, especially one who is not tissue centered to begin with."

With the exception of DNA sampling, everything mentioned above is *already being done* by most Master Chefs. Chef ingredients overall are more inclusive of BE ingredients, hence the reason so many see a schematic trade as the most efficient use of both parties' time.

"The question at hand is, how do you compensate a bio-engineer for the tissues you wish to acquire? Do you purchase finished goods outright? Do you purchase a schematic? Do you expect to be handed a schematic because you've done all the leg work gathering the resources? Do you just say screw it all and become a bio-engineer yourself?"

Pretty much all of the above, with the exception of becoming a BE myself.

I don't really "expect" to be handed a schem, but it has happened. For the most part, I actually prefer to buycrates at 25-30k apiece. But no one can seem cater to the demand, so I ask for schems and get the meat/flora myself most of the time.

It just seems that if there are a buncha BEs out there with 5+ factories pumping out supplements, I haven't found them yet.

I'll be blatantly honest with you. The reason you can't find a lot of bio-engineers cranking out tissues in 5 factories is because its boring as heck.

As I've posted before, and anyone that is vaguely familiar with bio-engineering would know, making animals is infinitely more fun. I takes a LOT of meat to make animals. It also takes a huge amount of time. People aren't generally interested in going out to collect giant stacks of high end meats to make tissues when you stand to make so much more money and have a lot more fun making animals.

I understand the comments regarding whether schematics should be tradable. If they weren't tradable many chefs would never see tissue products.

It simply comes down to fair market value. You can collect all the resources in the world but without that schematic its just a stack of meat and flora. Its the schematic that makes that meat and flora become tissues. The tissues make your end products worth a lot more. It just goes to reason the schematic has an inherent value that bio-engineers are aware of.

I wish everyone the best when it comes to the BE/chef partnership. Buy schematics. Pay a fair price for them and you'll have a BE friend for as long as you need one.

I don't think anyone is disputing what a good chef goes through to practice their profession. No I don't need Tat tubers but I do need Lok wild wheat which can be very tricky to harvest, especially with no combat skills. I also need Dathomir insect meat which is a nightmare to get in quantity. Again, no combat skills. You have to buy or make trim some how. I have to buy or make advanced medical components.

Its not a debate about who has to do what to create their product. I'd be thrilled if I could set down a harvester and come back in two days to find a ton of fish in the hopper but that will never happen. I'm sure you'd like to do the same with some of your more hard to come by resources. I'd own more than one factory if I could get enough resources to make pet stims and tailor tissues and chef tissues. To make all my customers happy I'd have to have more factories running at full tilt. The only thing stopping me is the amount of resources I have. In a very clear sense, chef and BE is not all that different. Only the products we make define us. Well that and the fact I can kill a rancor without firing a shot.

The question at hand is, how do you compensate a bio-engineer for the tissues you wish to acquire? Do you purchase finished goods outright? Do you purchase a schematic? Do you expect to be handed a schematic because you've done all the leg work gathering the resources? Do you just say screw it all and become a bio-engineer yourself?

Those are all good valid questions. Coming up with a solid answer will determine whether you acquire those tissues you need. The answer will also determine whether you get more tissues in the future. Again, some bio-engineers have taken up chef. It wouldn't surprise me if some chefs took up BE. A grind is a grind is a grind. The skill points are a killer though. Speaking for myself I'm glad I have the BE part out of the way already.

im in a equal partnership with a BE. he supplies only myself. in return we split the chef products 50/50. its well worth it to me. i sell my brandy crates for 200k each. i make more money than ill ever need. more than happy to make my BE partner just as rich. we even hunt together to supply him with the best meats. he lets me use some of his lots for factories, a storage house, and harvesters. we have become best buds even. we have actually been splitting the profit from sales. and on top of that i give him all the free food and drink he wants for personal use. some days he sells a factory run and tips me half the profit. other days i sell the runs. to me, his profession is no less valuable than my own. certainly couldnt make the credits im making now without his BE components and his lots. heck. i feel like im getting a great deal.
