Thread: The State Of The Chefs Address

Here is where things are right now:

The reality is this: chefs are not that popular and they will probably never be that popular. We are what I call a niche profession. The draw of this game for most people is to become rebels or smugglers or storm troopers or jedi. When we were kids and played star wars, nobody on my block ever wanted to be Wuher the Bartender. (And I always got stuck playing Chewbacca.) What does this mean? We are on their list of things to fix, but we are not a priority. If smugglers want to be fixed and chefs want to be fixed, who do you think can yell louder? As much as I love the chef community we have here (and I think it is one of the best communities and it depresses me to see so many of you get upset and leave) this is just being realistic. I don't believe we will have to wait much longer, however.

The developer in charge of chefs seems to be a nice guy and a really good developer...perhaps too good. The problem is that right now he has a lot on his plate that he needs to do. In my personal opinion, I think he has too much on his plate. He really is a very competent game developer and I do trust him....my only complaint about him is that he doesn't have the time to give everything on his plate the time it deserves. I have even suggested to the developers that chef be given to somebody else who may have more time to work on the profession. The reply I got was that the producers have a lot of faith that our developer can make the profession more fun, and I can accept that....I hope that you can as well.

There is hope:

One of the things he is in charge of is the new player city system. He has been told that is his priority and it is taking up most of his time. The good news is that player cities are about to go into the internal testing phase. Once this happens, most of his work on player cities will be done and he will have a lot more time to devote to other things...like us! He says once that players city opens up, he is going to schedule time to work on each profession.

The other thing is they are talking about starting Bug Fridays. This means that on Fridays all the developers do is devote themselves to fixing bugs. The Chef developer says he can take care of many of our issues during this time, like putting in milk or the whacky problem with experimenting we have. If they start doing this, not only the chefs but most professions will see a faster turn around on their problems.

There is light at the end of the tunnel...but the tunnel goes on for a little ways yet and we have to be patient. I am sorry to say that to you because I also have a problem with patience.

Well, I'm still lurking around this forum to see if there's any changes to the profession...

I'd be curious to know which other professions this dev is in charge of... Kinda to know if being responsible for player cities is munching his time for fixing those too? Maybe squad leader and combat medic, heh?

Thanks SirVimes for the update. You're really doing a good job with this unenviable task. I know I wouldn't want to be between all us angry chefs and the developers at the moment.

What makes me mad is that ever since we got the response to our first correspondent report and now, apparently nothing has been done with chefs. The food balance pass has not even started. With 300,000 subscribers cant they afford to hire another dev to work on some of these neglected issues?

Good to hear there's a reason for the lack of chef updates. I personally couldn't care less about the cities, buttheyare definitely one of the "nifty new features" SOE touted for Galaxies, so it makes sense that would sit higher on his to-do list.

Just out of curiousity (and please feel to ignore this, especially if its one of "those" topics) did SOE make you correspondants fill out some sort of non-disclosure agreement for what you learn in the correspondant forum and dev contact? Strictly the honor system (and kudos to them if they're this trusting with their customers)? Or do they hold threats of dire consequences over your head if you squeal? "Talk, and we'll drop the milk priority even lower!"

I, too, will wait patiently, chef skills unsurrendered, for that day when I can walk into a cantina and say "Yes! I have food you will want, use, and pay for! But not necessarily in that order..."

Nope, didn't sign anything. They just politely ask us to keep what is discussed private for now. They never said anything about what would happen if we didn't. Probably they would just find other correspondents.

And to be honest, there is not much that I can tell you guys. I have had discussions on how we feel the climb to master chef is too slow, and there has been debates between me and other corresponents on comparing medicines, spice and food...but as far as chef stuff goes, there is not much more than what is above.

Amen Brother. I have a chef as a secondary character and I have crafted my way through Medic, Doctor and Combat Medic and nothing has cuased me to curse more than the little bit of Chef crafting I have done here to get Mixology 2.(The Artisan was easy...now if I could only get the app xp to be MasterArtisan it would be okay)

I dont know, but if you ask me, it sounds awesum. Even if it never comes, it's still something to hold on to, and still something to look forward to... success...

Even more so =), it's not like one to give up when a task as menial as TRYING to sell food becomes available. Chef's all the way my friend...

And when the patches come out that enhance us even further than thought possible... well... dreams are for rookies.. But dreams none the less...

bottom line - chefs will not getthe promised balance pass anytime soon to make room for player cities.

in my opinion content should be added after the current problems are fixed not before. adding new content will usually mean new bugs that will arise and things will only get worse.

chef wont be able to get much love in the future either

Other classes are stealing our abilities , and by the time they get around to balancing us the other classes buffs will be out of controll and they wont be willing to make chef buffs more potient and we will be stuck again.. unless they plan to give us some other abilities besides making buffs.

I think its important to remember that we are not waiting in a "line". That would assume there is an ETA we are going to be fixed, even if its "you guys are between this fix and that fix".

Our spot in line changes as more and more problems arise both in game and in other professions. So we will probably remain at the bottom for a long time.

What SOE needs to do is hire more people, and they have the money for it.

Also at first I thought that chef was a slow grind, but as I gradually moved up the tree and then finally to master I am GLAD it was that slow. It gives me a better perspective on what I have accomplished, and makes me feel more proud of what I was able to even if the overall profession is broken. In fact I think ALL elite professions should be just as slow to level in.
