Thread: I'm kind of curious about this holo chef hate thing.
Ok, so I was a holo chef. I started on lowca as a bounty hunter, read my first holo and it said chef. So I dropped bh, picked up artisan, bought a bunch of harvesters and resources, and grinded like mad.
To make matters worse, I am even more hated by this boards because after I finished grinding out master, I committed the ultimate sin in KEEPING the profession and saturating the market. I bought up sea's and good resources, entered price wars with other chefs, etc.
Now with this info alone I know many of you resent me, but that chef has since dropped all his skills and continued on the road to jedi. I then did something that blew my mind and still confuses me, I created a novice artisan on another server, and started the long tedius path of hand sampling my way through domestic arts. Through some kind people (and christams holos) I was able to work my way up to Master Chef there, completely out of fun with no intention of grander things.
So given this second charachter, going chef completely for the spirit of the profession, but also given my history as a holo chef, do I earn the love of the awesome chefs in this forum, or am I still considered a mixture of pond scum and that white stuff which forms at the corner of your lips when you get really thristy?
I've noticed the same thing. My holo said chef, but I have actually kept the class because I am having fun. I am not going to stereotype all chefs, but there are some chefs that wouldn't spit on us if we were on flames.
On my server, chefs are still kind of rare. Imho, the older chefs see us as competition.
Hmm.. you know, as far as I've seen, you can be a Holo-anything and as long as you don't post anything close to the below sentance you won't be hated.
"Deod I needs 200k xxx and 300k xxx and tell me the L33t6s grinds KK, I have no crazy bank but U B rich so share."
Oh and "where's a macro so I can grind <insert profession here> while my mom makes me clean my room?"
For the most part, if you civil and polite I've not seen really hate... unless of course you ask a question that can be answered on the FAQ.

I can imagine why you feel like that, but i don't think its 100% fair (or 100% unfair either):
Holochefs initially got a cold shoulder from some folks in here because when they first appeared the profession was broken and had been for ages, the few chefs lefthere were demoralized, and suddenly the forum was full of holochefs saying "**edit** I've ended up having to do this sucky profession. You guys must be idiots for being chef" etc.
Then regulars on the forum naturally took umbrage at the flood of posts asking about grinding, macros etceven though some of them had gone to the effort of putting together posts about the subject and sticking them to the top (this particular irritation clearly persists).
And finally I think there is a sense of loss.. the chef community used to be really small and tight and thus friendly (actually I think it still is friendly). Now chef is looking good I think some people can't help feeling that they're 'not special' anymore, and also worrying perhaps that the one thing chefs were able to do (make money) will be compromised.
Valid concerns and understandable I think. Despite all this most of the folks on this board have been perfectly welcoming and i'm sure the few who've occasionally been irritable don't really hate Holochefs- they just get grumpy sometimes all! They're allowed to be grumpy sometimes, surely!
We're not perfect, but I doubt you'll find a friendlier board, better regulars ora better correspondant.

In general, people in any profession dislike hologrinders because they blow through the profession with utter disregard for everyone else, taking everything they can get (macros, tips, and resources) but offering nothing back to the community. In addition,those in crafting professions oftendump their goods on the market at a loss,having an adverseeffect (albeit short-term) on the economy and the other crafters.
My sense of the chef community feeling toward holochefs that stay is one of wariness. I think people are happy that you enjoy the profession, but they are a bit concerned that in your rush to hit the top, you didn't actually learn the ins-and-outs of the profession as well as not having anything to offer back to the community through tips and techniques. I think this pertains to all professions, not just chef.
As far as competition goes, I suspect that if you are keeping the profession, you are pricing your goods competitively but still high enough to make a profit. People will always complain about someone who sells cheaper products, but if your business model is viable, there's not much they can do about it. On my galaxy (Bria), chefs are few and far between and our economy is not very mature, so you would have no impact on anyone.
In summary, I don't think they despise you, I think they are just wary until they get to know you better.
(In case you're wondering, I recently gave up my chef skills as I got tired of waiting for the changes, but I've been lurking these boards since day 1.)
Well, as one of the worst of the "holohater" offenders I'll give you my side of the story.
By the way, great thread. Nice discussion of matters with no flames or namecalling. This is what I like to see.
We really dont hate Holochefs just because they are holochefs. Ive seen plenty of chefs that started their path because of a holo turn out to be great chefs, that come to the boards and contribute to conversations, actually studied the class beforehand. Take pride in the quality of their food and drink. And about the competition thing. Trust me, most of the old school chefs would welcome some competition now adays. Might let us actually catch up on orders and stock our vendors again.
Your dead on as to why most chefs acted like they did when the holocraze hit. We as a prof were broken, beaten down and completely ignored. We were routinely laughed at when we showed up at starports or constantly beraged with tells asking us why anyone would want to master chef. Sales were pathetic due to the ever increasing bugs with our products. But we held on because we loved chef, and because we hoped one day to be fixed.
Well they did, fix us that is of a fashion. We started to increase sales, started to get people to realize what food and drink could do for them and we had just started to hold up our heads when the hologrinders came en mas.
Our once quiet friendly little board where chefs would swap stories and compare recipies was now a flood of "how u grind chef FAST" and "ugh! I got chef this Suxxor!" At first we actually tried to help a bit, but it didnt take long to realize that these people wernt reading past posts, they werent looking for info, they wanted to be handed the profession with a bow on it directly to them. We began to lash out. We built walls to try to insulate ourselfs in the form of "how to grind our proffession" stickies, but it didnt help at first. Soon we became so irrational that if a new chef came in and asked a question and didnt mention the fact that they weren't a hologrinder we would attack them. We got pretty bad actually and im sure alienated a few future chefs. It aint pretty but its what happend.
I think we've calmed down a lot, but we still get irritated with the ones who still come in here asking for all the info on a platter when its at the top sticked for them, but as a general rule now we just either dont answer them at all or someone is nice enough to repond with "check the stickies" instead of a 6 page flame war with them.
As a old timer chef, thats my version. Hope it helps.
The previous chefs summed it up for me. In addition to that, is the laziness factor. Alot seem to master chef, then decide they want to keep it. But they dont realize the amount of work involved, and for some reason often feel you should "give" them your work...ie send me all your resource locations etc etc. Then there is that so many blew through it so fast that they learned *nothing* about the profession. You dont need to learn anything to double click resources in a macro. Then suddenly its...so whats important in resources, what do I need to do, etc etc etc. Which is all fine and good to ask questions but these really arent questions appropriate to a master chef. These are questions appropriate to a novice or even an artisan. These are not the oddball circumstances but rather the normal circumstances. As a chef thats been around awhile...guess who gets to answer these questions several times a day.
Another thing...typically chefs have a been a tight bunch. We've generally worked together and cared about our profession. Since the holochef debut we're seeing things like price wars, product being dumped on the market below cost and a general sense of well I can sell cheaper than you, I can take your business etc etc. Super. Thats the exact attitude that chef DIDNT have. And now this cutthroat mentality is coming to life right before our eyes as a gift to us from sony via holocrons. Chef wasnt like other crafting professions. We dont war on each other, we dont think we have steal business from each other, and we certainly dont grief each other. But all this is changing now thanks to the new breed of chef.
It used to be when people saw my master chef tag, theyd say ,"wow a master chef" now I get tells, "so are you using chef to pick up a quick million" Why not just slap me in the face, thats what it felt like. There is no thought anymore that someone does chef because they like the profession, the thought now is you do it to support your friends or to get rich. Many of us worked through this profession back when the best harvs you could get were personals. We were here when factories didnt work for food, when food stacks broke, when food killed people. We stayed through that because we love the profession. There was never a thought before that I was a chef to get rich. But thats all there is now. Surely youre a chef to get rich. Where did this school of thinking come from suddenly? That stupid blue cube.
I have been an aspiring chef since the game was released, I went through all the things Vish and Nikki have pointed out already. One thing that is really starting to irritate me about holo chefs are the constant tells asking me for my resources. I say no, all my resources are high quality, not for grinding, I spent months getting the best stuff. The response I get, over and over and over.... "But I'll pay you a lot, dOOd." Of course these conversations are in addition to the give me the macro requests and what should I grind to get there the fastest and how long did it take you, blah blah. I refer them to the chef forum and they tell me that takes too long, ARG. So, yes, I'm a little frustrated, but I do try not to take it out on anyone in this forum and I don't post a whole heck of a lot, compared to some. So, I wouldn't say I hate holo chefs in general, I hate the lazy butt ones that disturb me in game constantly and feel like I should do all their work to help them attain Jedi. I shall toss the next one in the oven! 
My perspective is that I'm not playing this game to make money. That will only get you so far, and then you'll bebored IMO. But having my own restaurant is fun. I'm not a master chef yet so I can't vouch for the crazy supply/demand issues. Business is a little slow for me. Most of my income trickles in from singles on the bazaar. But I think competition is good, and I never disliked holo chefs. After training them I'd always wish them happy grinding, and to let me know if they needed more training.
Its not so much holochefs, but general rudeness of some players that I dislike. Most of the career chefs I've talked to have been very friendly. I don't understand how people can think that just because you have the ability to do something, that means you have to do it for them. Like this idiot at Coronet's bank, shouting that he needed a cloak for 10 minutes straight... Sorry, ranting...

I remember your posts and my only complaint about you is that I can't remember how to spell the last part of your name. You have always been polite, and have made some intelligent posts...as far as I am concerned you are a welcomed member of the chef community.
as others have said, i have two problems. One is hologrinders who tell me my profession is boring and sucks. I find that really rude.
The other problem I have is those that ask the same questions over and over again when I stickied the answers at the top of the forum! That is just lame, and we get a lot of them.
Other than that, I don't have a problem with holochefs.
There is a feeling that there are more chefs out there in general, and some people are a bit sad about that because it means that a tight nit community is expanding....which means it won't be as tight nit. But I don't think that is a problem with hologrinders because they usually come and go. Or that it is a bad thing for that matter.

the same sort of thing happens with musican/dancer all the time these days... ive even gone to the point of avoiding non player cantinas to keep away from them...
then again, this sort of thing seems to happen with most professions, hell, ive heard plenty complaints about other professions like bh and rifleman and such... so its more of a global "i want to get this done as fast as i can because it sucks and i dont feel like actually doing the profession" sort of thought
