Untill you hit the 1 second speed cap for all specials...speed will alwase give you more damage per second than going for all damage in a weapon. Find out how fast a carbine needs to be for you to hit that mark and get that speed on your carbines...then go for damage. There are sevral posts that will tell you how to find out how fast your carbines need to be. But at master with no other mods (60 speed) i believe you shoot your slowest specials at the speed of the weapon. But adding just one attachment with say + 5 speed makes a huge diffrence. You can reach the speed cap if you have maxed the attachments at 25 for a total of 85 speed somewere around 2.3 speed carbines...not an exact number just an educated guess off hand. I hit the cap at 2.4 speed.

Hmm, Li'lith, not sure what you mean but if you weigh animprovement (decrease)in speed of about, say, 25 %, that will give the EXACT same increase to the dps as if you increased damage with that same 25 %. The dps increase will simply be increased with 25 %.

This holds true untill you reach the speed cap when of course speed will no longer give any increase at all.

The difference I have noted is that if you go for high damage the slower firerate will give you less HAM costs overall, while keeping a good dps. The benefits of speed is instead that you are able to do different kinds of attacks faster, which is goodif you want to apply many status effects on a shorter time.

I'm carbineer 4-4-3-2 and my other skill points are in non-combat professions for PvP raidsupport. I value speed slices and speed powerups above anything else. Currently using an Elite Carbine with a 30% speed slice and 33% speed powerupwhich puts itat 1.6 base speed. I really notice the difference.

No they are far far from the exact same increase in dps. I dont feal like doing actual math with in game items but look at it this way. Say your avrage damage is 100 per shot every 10 seconds....nice round numbers. You can either increase the speed 25% or the damage 25%. the damage gives you 125 damage every 10 seconds...in a minut thats 750 damage total. Or you could increase your speed 25% wich means you shoot 100 damage every 7.5 seconds. In a minut thats 800 damage total. And you get 2 more shots off for that much better a chance to apply your status effect or what have you. Yes its harder on hams but with buffs what is ham use anyway : )

Quandry. I would recommend a 25% damage slice over a speedslice any day. 50 damage? Thats not exactly alot and there are speed skill tapes after all

heh those numbers are way off as far as ingame mecanics go. Tripple the damage and cut the speed in half and your a lot closer to actual game numbers. THere are a few posts around that have exampls and im sure someone will bring one up. Believe me if you like. Im all for people going their own way but speed slices will kill things faster than damage slices untill you hit the cap.

People talk a little about this in nova's post "ham costs 101" but remember the bulk of that post is talking about efficient ham use not dps. They are compleatly diffrent.

Then your recommendation would be horribly WRONG. I have posted numerous times the math behind these calculations. NOT counting HAM, an identical % speed slice is about 8% better than the same % damage slice in DPS.

Don't quote me on the number, but it is significant. I will try and dig up the latest post......

Man this took a lot of digging.... http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=carabineer&message.id=22915

There is another thread out there that includes powerup calculations but I can't find it right now.

Some stupid F**K decided to one-star my replies here, but this info shows most options for slicing and powerups on a weapon.

I don't show all the calculations here, but most people don't want to see them

Speed. Especially with status effects becoming key to our profession. Get them out there and landed.

If you have two identical weapons before slice, at +60 carbine speed, a speed slice of 30% will almost always have a higher DPS than a 30% damage slice.

Carbineer with +60 carbine speed and using the highest DPS special (fullautosingle2).

Unsliced laser carbine:
[email protected]
Fullautosingle2 average DPS: 418.25

With a 30% damage slice:
[email protected]
Fullautosingle2 average DPS: 543.38

With a 30% speed slice:
[email protected]
Fullautosingle2 average DPS: 588.64

At +60 carbine speed, you have to have a 1.0 second carbine to hit the speed cap with all specials. If you have +85 carbine speed you only need a 2.6 second carbine to hit the speed cap with all specials.

It is all here, slicing AND powerups.

You have tested this ingame I assumeTAfirehawk?

My first thought based on the fact that I thought that damage and speed should give equal bonus from slicing, was that a speed slice of 25 % on a 10 second speed would be calulated as:

10/1.25 = 8 ,

which would givea damage slice and a speed slicethe exact same dps. However seeing the numbers presented here the speed slice must be calculated:

10*(1-0.25) = 7.5

and then I agree with you, the speed slice does indeed give a higher dps.

1/(0.65*1.35) = 1.14

1/(0.85*1.15) = 1.02

A 14 % increase in dps comparing a 35 % speed slice to an equal damage slice, or only a 2 % increase in dps comparing the same value of a 15 % slice.

Seems like a strange system, but probably true, so I apologize for the ignorance in my earlier post.
