Thread: Shouldn't Carbines be Fast? ( and other musings)
Just thinking, aren't carbines supposed to be sub machineguns, basically? Look at the moves- Full Auto! Perhaps carbines should be as fast as pistols are now, and pistols should have the current Carbine speed?
First time I was going through marksman, I had a laser carbine. I tried to spam overchargeshot1 like I could with any other weapon class. I about killed myself. Ack, you guys are right.
You must admit, carbines look SO much cooler than any other ranged weapon. Case and point: EE3, Elite
So, why did youpersonally choose Carbineer? I'll start. Its cool, and we will be all spiffy when we get fixed. ![]()
I thought so too, CodeBlue. Check out my old thread from September.

People are confusing fast rate of fire with the ablity to aim/target/hit effeftively at fast speed.
If you were to grab an m4a1 and hold trigger you'd empty your clip fast, but mainly you wouldn't hit **edit** because the spray would send the gun all over the place. So just because a weapon fires fast, doesn't mean you can fire it fast. It takes time to mount, aim and hit an object. Thats what speed represents. our Fast rate of fire is represented in our special moves like Full Auto, or Burst shot or scatter shot. Those are the moves that take advantage of our spray cannons ablitiles to launch of several shots in rapid succsession.
At master carbineer I hit the speed cap at 2.4, I'm pretty fast I can fire off burst shots as fast as my computer can render the images.
A pistol on the other hand is light, you hold it in one hand its easy to quick aim and pull the hair trigger. Which is why pistols are so fast.
If one wouldhold a submachine gun, a good example would be an MP40, steady at the target, and use the full auto funtion intellegently, you would be firing much more often than with a pistol, with only marginally less accuracy. Besides, laser weapons are not akin to today's weapons. But, if we are using that as an example...
Wouldn't a pistol also have reduced speed to compensate for a smaller clip, and reloading? Fact is, if you are trying to tell me that you can quickly and more accurately aquire targets, then shoot them at a much higher rate of fire with a pistol, rather than a fully-automatic weapon, you are sounding insane, no offense. ![]()
Pistols in this game have no clips silly... ![]()
Have you ever held a two handed weapon? The time it takes you to mount it to your shoulder, turn, take aim and fire will be much longer that it takes an experienced gunfighter to quickdraw steady his arm and fire. That is what the high speed of pistols represent. Ease and implicity in application.
Just practice with a squrt gun and a broom stick. You'll see what it means.
Now in actually the carbineer will fire off waaaaaay more shots than a pistoler would in a panic situation, but thats sort of immaterial to this debate.

ok...so I tried this as a thought experiment....and the squirt gun had a much higher rate of fire and accuracy than a broom did.

Glad to see we came to the same conclusion! Well I wish I had a squirt gun sub for a carbine, but mainly it was to practice turn and aim. You see that in close corners enviorments turning and aiming is much faster and easier with the squirt gun, then with the broomstick.
But here is where the imbalance kicker comes in. A Pistol isa short range combat weapon, inside a room or down a hallway its easy to fight with a pistol, but if you have to hit anything at 20 meters or beyond aiming with a pistol that distance is quite difficult, and time consuming. You really have to line up your shot, wheraes with something with a longer stock carbine in the hands of an experienced user it would actually have the turn and aim advantage over a pistol.
So in my opinon the way to replicate this in game would be to make pistols aboslutely suck at any range beyond 30 meters. They should blow and blow hard, seriously gunfighters at that range should suffer the penalites we get at max range, and they should seriously maybe only land 1 out of 5 shots. its ridiculous how accurate they are at long range and it irks me every day I get 3 stopping shots from 50 meters on me. I think that people have a slightly lopsided view of carbines. A carbine is between a sub-machine gun and an assault rifle. Putting it in line with a light machine gun (such as an M4) is a little too high of a caliber. More along the lines of an Uzi, to anAK-47, if you ask me. As far as not being able to hit for much accuracy with a carbine at fullauto, that depends on what and how you're shooting. An experienced gunman will walk his bullets up the target. You don't start aiming at the chest or head----you start around the thighs or groin. You can get a good 10-12 slugs into an opponent if you know what you're doing, before the recoil brings your aim completely off target. What's more, what about when you're firing on something as huge as a Graul, or Krayt Dragon? Size does matter.
I have several buddies in the military and they all talk about controlled bursts. Aquick sqeeze on the trigger gets you about 3 bullets in your target. THe only time a real life troop would use full auto is to provide cover fire from what I understand. Now mounted guns are a different matter.

actually carabines are automatic (fullauto shots) and pistols are semi, which means you have to release and squeese the trigger every time. So a carabine will shoot faster. And as for target aquiring I don't doubt you can do faster with pistol but once I aquire a target I can empty all of the30 shots (at 60 meters) faster than you can empty 5 with a pistol. Hehe anyway - this doesn't matter - it's all in the game balance - they don't want to make carabines too powerful.
Although I do think a pistol shouldn't have much accuracy after 20 meters, I mean have you tried it? Even if you're a professional gunfighter you can't hit anything at high range- although I guess if you have a colt you can actually hit something at 50 meters....
