Johnny yes I undrestand the Automatic weapons bit. But just becuase you've got an automatic weapon doesn't mean you can target fire and hit your target at super speed. You have to aim, and aiming at a moving target with a large two handed weapon is slow. Thats what the pistol speed represents, its ease of use. Notice how you progress up in the lines you get speed bonsus's for your carbine? So a skilled carbineer has magical powers that make him able to increase the rate of fire of his weapon? NO, he's a skilled carbineer he is faster and pointing, aiming and targeting his weapon than a n00b carabineer is.

The speed or rapid rate of fire is represented by our high damage specials, and our ablity to multiple location shoot. Like scatter shot, Full auto, burst shot. Notice that most all pistol special moves are single shot? Whereas ours fire off a several shots? get it yet?

I chose carbines for two reasons. The most important reason is second.

1) With its "best" accuracy being "mid range" it fit my play style. Mobs and people tend to come at you when you open up. So riflemen tend to lose accuracy to a degree once the fight starts. Pistol users have to be too close to have optimum accuracy (i would argue they are too accurate outside of their optimum range, but whatever. another time)

2) Dr. Dre - he loved AKs! Carbines = closest thing we got to an AK! So there!

Agreed, the specials are meant to represent the fire capabilities of a carbine (full auto, burst shot, etc.). Most carbines however, don't shoot one bullet at a time. Most are automatically set to burst fire (around 3-5 shots per trigger pull). Here's the question: if you need specials to fire like a carbine, what is it doing in the meantime? When you're not using the burst fire, or full auto command, what the hell is it shooting like? A pistol? A rifle? Neither? Both? All three?

A few things; the M4 carbine exists, no questions regarding it's classification. A quick web search will show you some applications, notably for special forces units. Lasers don't have recoil. Carbines are not huge 2 handed weapons, which is half of the point of carbines. They are relatively light and extremely portable. Carbines have superior accuracy to pistols especially at range because of the increased barrel length. Taking recoil out of the equation makes this point moot though. They can be used to fire single shots and short burstsas well asin a full auto capacity. The potential damage output over time of a contemporary carbine, and the number of shots which can be fired per minute (speed) dramatically exceeds that of a pistol.

Theyhave to forsake realism (the carbine is simply a superior combat weapon to a pistol for many reasons including range, versatility, available components, and tactical capability) in order to achieve balance, but there is a lot of room for improvement on how they have handled it.

Lol, didn't mean that the M4 didn't exist. Just meant that for the intents and purposes of the game, it was probably too high of a caliber to be included in the devs's idea of carbines. Indeed, anything with a full auto capability is a "machine gun" (machine pistols, sub-machine guns, light and heavy machine guns), but they aren't all carbines. I was calling the M4 a light machine gun to get it out of the carbine classification for the game. Indicant is right, they can't realistically make carbines and pistols equivalent to their real life counterparts. I agree though, they could've gone about it better to make a conversion from the real life tool to the game for balance's sake, because most people have certain expectations just hearing the name "carbine".

If we're going to compare this in SWG to RL, we're in for a load of trouble. The simple fact is that carbines were designed by the devs as a compromise between rifles and pistols. Moreover, their stats, especially the range and speed stats, fairly well reflect the RL differences between.
