Thread: which is the best overall carbine to use
I carry 3 carbines on me at all times, and have them quick key'd.
A Laser
an Elite
an ee3
THe laser is used mostly for battling NPC's, at ranges of 45-50 meters
I switch to my elite inside 45-35 meters
I switch to the ee3 at 35-0 meters.
I'm happy with that setup, works great for me.

I don't think there really is ONE good carbine that has good stats in all of those categories. The laser does the most damage most of the time, but you sacrifice speed and HAMs. Many people will tell you they like the smaller damage weapons with higher minimum damage so that they have more consistancy in damage.
Me? I run around with a 98-377 dmg, 3.8 speed laser carbine. Unfortunately, I give up lower HAMs which are 50/70/50 for this weapon. Now that might sound like a lot, but it usually evens out with other weapons since they do less damage, they have to use more specials which means they have to use as much HAM to bring down a mob.
Most carbineers will at least carry the 3 weapons that do energy, heat, and acid damage for the big hunts (like where mobs have 100% resist to categories).
We still haven't gotten any link-steel aluminum, so the only laser weapons are mob drops. And our only titanium aluminum has an OQ of 4, so the DXR6 models all stink. I also carry an E11 because it's AR1, and an EE3 for heat damage.
Greets ...
It's best to have several weapons as others have alluded to.
I am sorry to say that the "laser carbine" is not on my list. I own one .. it's hot keyed ... but when I switch from my DXR6 (main weapon) to it, It takes longer to kill the same creatures.
I use a CDEF Carbine to hit a monster with specials, then switch the DXR6 ... if they have high acid resistance I switch to the E11 or EE3 ... (depending upon resistances).
When I try to put the laser in, it just doesn't kill as fast ... it's a decent laser ... it's just that it hits on the low side to much :-(
Hero out
I perfer the Laser Rifle... sometimes you get low hits with things like Legshot2, sometimes I only hit for 150-200, but it ranges up to 1600-2000ish, with the average at right around 1000.
If you can stand the fairly high HAM use and the way crazy damage variance then you'll find it does really great damage. If you want to do lower HAM use, less damage-variance, and lower DPS, then stick with the DXR2. Both are really good weapons, just for God's sake don't try to use an Elite, they're pretty shatty right now.
EE3, E11, and DH17 aren't bad eaither, but I find they just don't hand out the punishment like the DXR2 and the Laser.
I use the EE3 and the Laser for most situations... The AR2 on the Laser makes it do so much damage, but vs. mobs that have really high Energy %, I use the EE3. My laser rifle is decent damage (319), and the HAM costs are 30-40. It's an all around good shooter.

I have switched to a EE3 now and like it a lot. It was crafted for speed mor than damage (don't remember the damage now). Sliced for speed it's down to 1.9s. The very nice min damage makes the gun dish out several punishment... often.
My previous gun was a sliced Snubnosed DH17. Was realy good, 80-180 2.8 I think.
I also have a laser carbine, but I didn't find that one to my liking. Slow speed, and redicolous low min damage.

Falkyrk, that is a most impressive carbine. I wonder how you mannaged one with min damage that high. Is it sliced for damage?
Yes, that is most definitely sliced. I'm not sure what the original damage was since I bought it pre-sliced from the vendor. But the HAM costs are crazy high. 222 action points when I use crippling. that means i get for 4 shots in.
I prefer the E11 myself. 2.2 speed, 67-142, low HAM across the board. Doesn't pack the whallop that the Laser Carbine does, but more than makes up for it in speed.
One thing I noticed alot of people seem to overlook is basic weapon mods. Barrels and such are not hard to craft, and can be got for fairly cheap, sometimes free. You can usually tack on a +25 to your min and max damage or so, and keep a stock on hand, as they run out in about 100 uses. I tend to think of them as ammo, and keep a few hot keyed, "reloading" with a new one as soon as one runs out...

My laser Carbine is 27-231 but fires off at 2.8. As I progress, I will become less concerned with speed and more concerned with damage which is why I am still leaning towards the Laser as I go through my carbineer tree. I do wish the damage were more consistant, though.
