I was asked to write up a short guide to carbineer with melee professions, and how they augment each other. Let’s see what happens

Carbineer and Melee-An Overview: Well, as many of us have realized, carbineer is NOT godlike. It can be played well, yes, but a lot of people who do high-end PvE and lots of PvP are finding more and more that they need to augment their carbineer skills with other professions. Melee professions have lots of bonuses and abilities that really help.

Does this mean you have to go melee in order to be good? No. But it sure is fun!

I will be focusing on carbineer and melee profs on a profession to profession basis, using the format of the viability of the combination, then the offensive/defensive strengths of the melee professions (so you know what your getting into).

Carbineer/Pikeman : The dreaded suicide combo. That’s right, here you have what was once considered the worst ranged elite (definetly not true anymore) and what is still the worst melee elite. It’s not horribly bad, but not very good either without massive augmentation from skill tapes and good weapons/armor.

Offense: Well, you can hit action a lot now. Too bad bleeds don’t stack anymore, because you’d have 4 different action bleeds. That was probably the best thing about carbineer and pikeman. You do get a lot of status inducing attacks though. And another AOE dizzy/KD. Its basically carbineer, just with big sticks. Not much different. The best thing by far is the nightsister lances. Multiple nasty diseases and poisons are always fun.

Defense: Pikeman has some mediocre defenses. More than swordsman, but less than TKA and fencer. And for those of you wondering why they keep getting killed by melee in PvP, melee mitigation is probably why. Damage on a general scythe in PvP goes from 500-700 a hit to 200-300 a hit with mitigation. It’s nice to have.

Pikeman isn’t the greatest, but if you want a hard challenge that can really shine through with a ton of attachments and a bunch of DoT weapons, by all means, have fun.

Carbineer/Swordsman : This is second to only Swordsman/Rifleman in PvE. Insane amounts of damage with swordsman, coupled with all the states of carbineer, and the amazing AOE attacks of swordsman, combined with AOE dizzy/kd… great. Performs well in PvP also, because of the mind damage. With a scythe, its like a TKA spamming Nexu Grin just with twice as much damage.

Offense: All I can say is this: it may be slow, but swordsman does massive damage. The scythe is very nice, despite the fact that it needs to be AP3, because of its high damage and fast speed. This is a krayt soloing profession, hands down. Get +25 to speed attachments, a damage sliced power hammer, and you do tons of damage.

Defense: Swordsman: The least defenses out of all the melee classes. But still more than carbineer. Before the defense stacking nerf, +215 counterattack was sure nice. Even now, counterattack with CoB is very very nice. Swordsman gets a couple state defenses, but not much. Don’t be looking to swordsman for defense. That’s not what it’s for.

Carbineer/Fencer : Has the best defenses out of any combo you could do. This is a brilliant PvP combo, because ranged KD/dizzy combined with the pure PvP damage of a stun baton is great. Not to mention fencers get a scatter hit as well, nicely complementing ours. I wouldn’t recommend this if your going to be doing solo PvE, but its nice for group PvE as a tank.

Offense: In PvE, sadly lacking. Only one AP1 weapon, not very high damage, etc, etc. In PvP, well, I’m sure you’ve all fought those fencers and their stun batons. I know I have. Fencers are insane in PvP. I haven’t PvPd much yet as a fencer, but from all the battles I’ve done with Imperial Blademasters, they are to be feared.

Defense: Fencers have the best defenses in the game. Hands down. Most ranged/melee, most state defenses, and nice dodge/CoB. PvE, PvP, doesn’t matter. They are hard to hit. They are extremely useful as tanks, despite their low damage output in PvE.

Carbineer/Teräs Käsi : This is a pretty balanced combination. Good in PvP, good in PvE, but not too powerful in both. Carbineer is a great complement for TK, because of the large amounts of states we can inflict, not to mention an AP2 weapon that’s halfway decent (even considering mitigation).

Offense: In PvE, TK doesn’t do half bad. Hits at the speed cap, for pretty high damage, with an AP1 weapon. They can take a lot of damage. A great complement for carbineer. In PvP, they do pretty well, with the KD/dizzy. But unfortunately, they suffer from the same problem as carbineers do it seems. Doc buffs + 80% composite basically negate all damage they do. But it can be overcome.

Defense: TK gets some great defenses, as well as the amazing Meditate. Poison/disease/wound heal, small buff, and Force of Will make meditate a great asset to any and all TKAs. Currently, CoB is broken for TKs so they get a little screwed on that end, but can usually get by without it.

Overall, it depends on what you want. If you just want your carbineer skills to be boosted, and to hell with using melee, dabbling in Fencer or TK is probably for you. If you want both to be usable equally, Carbineer/TKA is probably the most balanced combination. If you do Carbineer/Fencer or Carbineer/Swordsman, you’ll probably find yourself using the melee profs more, and relying less and less on your carbine skills except to apply states, etc. If you want a really hard challenge, are super rich and can pull it off, or are just plain insane, Carbineer/pikeman is a great combo for you.

Here’s a shortened version for you lazy people
Carbineer/Pikeman: Mediocre at best, unless your really rich and have a ton of skill attachments and DoT weapons. Not very useful to normal people

Carbineer/Fencer: Great for PvP and for PvE tanking, not so much for PvE damage. Defenses are great, and you’ll find yourself not getting hit very much.

Carbineer/Swordsman: This is mostly for PvE people, because the damage output of swordsman combined with the status effects of carbineer are a great PvE combo. Also, people who think (namely all the not-carbineer/BHs) can do very well in PvP

Carbineer/TKA: Very balanced, both professions complement each other nicely. This combo isn’t better in PvP or PvE, but equally good at both.

Also, if you just want defenses, i'd recommend dabbling in fencer or TK, depending on exactly what you want. nothing else gives good defenses.

Have fun

Good list.

I'm currently going Carbineer and Creature Handle. Works quite well too. I've never combined a ranged profession with a melee. Have to try it some day

Great list, this actually has prompted a change back to a ranged/melee setup as I had before.

Fencer/Carbineer is very nice.

I get called an exploiter at least twice everyday because I take out 3-6 people before one of them can bring me to half health.

I see many people taking about range/melee/TKA 4004.

What is the advantage of those two columns in TKA?

many thanks,

nova
