Thread: Sorry, but I have to ask this.

I've always wondered this about carbines in this game...

How can a gun that shoots a laser bolt be a carbine? Nym's slugthrower, which seems to shoot lasers now, makes sense but I've never understood why they are called carbines.

Tip to LEC/SOE: Sci-Fi MMO players don't necessarily belong to the same resource pool as fantasy MMO players.

A carbine is just a smaller version of a rifle, or a small rifle. In SWG theyh do indeed fit this role.

But a carbine is a gas-powered firearm. How does the laser bolt produce the gas blowback to recock the bolt and why would there even be a bolt?

Touche I know it's dumb to bring up stuff like this but I've always thought it was kinda funny.

only difference between a carbine and a rifle is barrel length. Technically, no blaster rifle should be a rifle, due to the inside of the barrel not being rifled. We just call them these names because they mean something to us.

couldnt resist =) :

Science and Science Fiction are just like a donkey and a horse.

The horse looks much better and is much faster as science fiction gets you everywhere and almost everything is possible, while science beeing the donkey looking more dumb just because it takes time to think first before it goes anywhere.

The difference between a rifle and a carbine isn't merely an issue of barrel length anymore.

A carbine utilizes the gas from the explosion of the round and ports it back to the chamber, from near the end of the barrel, to recock the bolt, at the same time venting and reducing recoil...which is why I think it's funny that the use the term carbine since there is no physical action that would make it a carbine.

I still want a shotgun.

The devs needed a third ranged profession.

Pistols. Rifles. Hmm...what else.

CARBINE!

That only applies to semi automatic or full-auto guns, be it a rifle or a pistol. The difference between rifles and carbines, as far as i know, is their size. That's why you have (in real life) the Colt M4 Carbine and the M16 rifle, as an example. Perhaps you are refering to sniper rifles that are fed manually (where you put a new bullet either by hand or using a bolt if it has a clip), but still, there are also sniper rifles that use part of the gas to load a new round.
