A carbine is a lightweight rifle with a shorted barrel and has nothing to do with the weapon's operating system (IE- blowback, gas, inertial, etc). So the concept of alaser carbine is not unthinkable! Your problem is with an incomplete (limited) definition of what a carbine is.
