Thread: Ranger/Carbineer?

Hi all,

I'm currently a ranger and I'm trying to decide what is the best ranged weapon specialization to go for. I'm mainly looking for something that is going to allow me to hunt solo. I'm not interested in PvP. Is carbineer a good idea? I don't know much at all about the profession but I would like your input. I am currently at Carbine IV in the Marksman tree and love my laser carbine. Is it worth going for Carbineer or should I go elsewhere?

regretfully carbineer is not anywhere near your most powerful "solo" profession...for that you want TKM, heavy-sword, pikeman (yes, in PVE they're devastating...& underrated), or rifleman.

rifleman if you don't like the running around after stuff thing...none of the other ranged have anywhere near the same damage as rifle, and you get ap2/ap3 weapons w/ very good defenses.

swordsman is just a mean muther...took out a krayt ancient the other day w/ a rifleman helping lay damage. fencer has much better defense, but can't hold up on the damage of a hammer/scythe. dabbling in fencer defense goes very well w/ swordsman if you have the skillpoints after ranger.

TKM is very high defense, very good damage against low-mid level stuff. massive drop-off in damage against heavily armored or high kinetic resist targets tho...and since kinetic is your only option, very limited if it's your only combat profession.

pikeman have amazing AE attacks, very good state attacks, crappy defense, and can easily obtain VERY nice DOT weapons...poison/disease/bleed/burn...pikeman can lay out an arsenal of DOT's by just pricking the opponent. also get nice dps against high-end content (good piercing) & kinetic/electricity damage types...also energy, but that NS energy lance is a bugger to obtain.

again...sorry to curb someone from carb, but if you're looking for stand-alone ability, carb is not what you seek.

thanks a lot, i appreciate the honesty about carbineer. after a little more research i am leaning towards melee over ranged professions.

Just thinking of switching my template, once again lol ...is ranger/carbineer an effective template? the KD, snares+Pdart look good lol ....plus the range is good for trap throwing. I hunt alot of krayts/gdk etc ...so will ranger/carbineer be able to support this?

I was a Ranger/Carbineer. It worked great together. Crippling shot + P-dart=root for those situations where you need to get some distance. (atleast thats what happened when I was thsi temp)

ranger carbineer fits very well together, ive been playing this lately and there is a lot more versatility than other professions combined with tactics.

essentially taking from phenix's big game hunting thread, most ranged templates can be very succesful.

I've been a Ranger/Carbineer since the CU and love my template.

IMO...
Carbines has FAR better specials then rifles and almost as good specials as pistols but has the added range over pistols

No root with carbs, but the p-dart + snare gives you a dandy root that you can keep re-applying

Damage on an e11 mark II can be GREAT... my base DPS is about 370

the KD with carbs has good damage as well (unlike BH KD) and also has some nifty animation... I love using charge shot for the final blow

The Grievance Striker carbine (NK loot drop) has really good damage and a RANGE OF 60 METERS!!! slap 2 ranged arms on and you can hit from 75m with a carbine!

so yes... Ranger/Carbines is a great template

I switched from Rifles to carbines after reading the intial release of the Ranger revamp.

While not able to do as much damge per shot carbines is nice when it comes to specials. As posted above P-darts and Crippling Shot and you have one slowed Krayt or GDK.

You still hunt them the same way. You kite and apply snares as needed. Difference being you do not have the Rilfe penalty for movement on you anymore, so you are a bit faster.

The knockdown is nice also. Once you execute a knockdown you have 5 seconds to apply your next shot for a 20% boost in damage. You also have two AOEs you don't have with rifles either. So kiting multiple targets is an option once again.

Since you best modifier is a 1.9 damage modifier you will have to fire more and manage your action just a bit more. I have been using PIxie, Booster blue and Blob Candy as well as SAC pups they all help to keep you in a prolonged fight.

I've been a master ranger / master carbineer since the CU, and it's a very good template. All I would add to the above is to finish the siren quest and get yourself a bothan bola special ops carbine. It does really good damage, even better when sliced.

I'm working back to my original template. By original I mean the template I had within the first couple of weeks of the start of the game - Ranger/Carbineer. Yeah...back then...it was rough. I'm glad to hear that it is a good match nowaday. I like to think I was just ahead of my time back then

The Devs seem to think so. Lol

Personally I've always been Ranger / Rifleman. I enjoy the ability to pick apart my prey before wading into battle and by carefully using traps and effective nuking I can thin a group down with it very easily.

There's a lot to be said about Carbines though. I was seriously tempted after the CU to trade to Carbines because I like alot of their specials... never really been a fan of their weapons though.

What sort of stats and damage type do those carbines have, Iseult?
Are they as good as this?
