My TC character is a carbineer and I've started wondering about the upcoming content.
Will the carbine live up to its naming?
Doing a few google searches I find that the carbine was originally created as a shotgun modification intended to be fired from a mount (a horse). It was shorter than the civil war rifle and less accurate (ha!) but could be effectively fired and cocked with one hand.
How many carbineer / CH's are there? Will carbineers (and lancers?) be the only effective mounted troops?

This is a good question. I was thinking along the same lines. If / when they fix our class.

I think it would be outstanding. I've devised several character templates:
Mounted Dragoon (Lance/Carbine):
Master Pikeman
Master Carbineer
Creature Handler 0/0/1/3
zero skill points left
Mounted Squad Leader:
Master Squad Leader
Master Carbineer
Creature Handler 0/0/2/2
zero skill points left
These two are based off the idea of buying CL20 creatures and riding them. Replace Empathy or Management for Taming if you want higher level creatures.
Then of course there's the master CH/Carbineer
Master CH
Master Carbineer
Medic 4/3/4/0
Who can capture, train, and heal the creatures for your troop. Possibly exchange medic for some bio-engineer for a more interesting combo.

your 0/0/x/x templates won't work. with 0 taming and 0 training, you will be limited to non-CH type pets.

They will work for CL20.
You get +5 taming at novice CH, and note my "trade empathy for taming" suggestion for higher level mounts.

oops... just had another thought... could it be that +taming doesn't do anything in terms of what creatures you control until you get to taming 2. Gee that stinks!

Do we know for sure that there will be mounted combat?
Don't think there is a word on that yet.

No idea... that's why the post title has "Pure conjecture" and a question mark at the end.

Having high mobility mounted battles in PvP would be amazing , as would counter tactics such as the use of mine fields in reducing that mobility.
Mounted combat would be an very welcome addition to a game where most fighting lacks little in terms of tactics when on open ground. Certainly there is no such thing as hit and run at the moment.
I see only one thing preventing such a fabulous addition to the tactical nature of combat in SWG, the howls and whines coming from the unarmed people who want everyone to just lay down and take the beating they have coming to them.
I am afraid though that the complaints from the unarmed players will be such as to prevent such tactical variety in the game and limit mounts to a bus service.
I would love to see mounted combat, as well as mounted use of devices such as the survey tool, but I fear that will all be sunk because of the unarmed minority.

Well I wold sure think that carbines would be the best wepon to be used on a mount, and so did the U.S. Cavilary back during the indian wars. Nothing like the lever action 30/30 which yes was a carbine not a rifle.
