Thread: Carbine Philosophies and Strategies

I am finding Carbineer to be a satisfying profession. It requires me to think and to plan. It forces me to analyze my opponents and determined their strengths and weaknesses. However, I would like for the sake of my own knowledge to know what other players think about certain professional matchups. Maybe some of the more experienced Carbineers can share with me some adjustments I can make to my own strategy to beat specific templates. I'll start with my choice of weapon and my template.

My main weapon :

Krayt Laser Carbine

1.6 speed

380ish max damage

+48 ideal range

Since I am a mayor, I have :

Master Politician

Master Carbineer

Master Marksmen

Pistoleer 0/0/3/0

Novice Medic

I have +14 speed attachments to my armor so that makes my total speed 79. (Perhaps someone can adjust a better carbine I could use.)

Being a mayor takes away any hope I have of making an "uber" template but I would like to know if there is anything I can adjust about myself to improve my combat effective versus these matchups :

Fencer :Given the nature of dodge, I find it increasingly hard to deal any significant damage to a fencer. I've tried snowcakes to no success. The added accuracy has no effect. I've tried max damage powerups. The shots that I do get in are still unsubstantial. The regeneration of buffed players and the lack of Carbineers to target a specific pool with significant damage prevents me from being able to scratch them. (Not to mention the constant center of being macros.)

Swordsmen : For some odd reason, their counterattack works a lot more frequenly than mine. I've been able to avoid their status effects but I can't penetrate the counterattack nor prevent the head hit from eventually draining my mind (even with highest mind possible.)

Riflemen : There's no other way to put it than I can't stop the head shots from taking me down before I can do anything to the Riflemen. Dizzying and kd/posture change does not seem to keep them on the ground long enough for me to damage them.

All help would be appreciated.

You are screwed.....even my 100% PvP template (Carbineer/Fencer/Pistoleer) has difficult times in those situations. I do however have enough armor and buffs and food that nobody but a CM or gang bang can kill me.....but there are a lot of guys I can't kill either, it sucks.

Swordsman Counterattack works better because of the CoB.

PvP is just armor decay battles, just wait for the Combat Balance....which isn't that far away.....we should see some fixes in Publish 10 and the whole deal in Publish 11 and hopefully the kinks worked out by Publish 12 (right before JTL).

Almost forgot, get rid of that damn Laser for PvP and get an Elite and DXR6

First of all might I suggest going Master Politician/Carbineer 3404/ BH 0400. It'll give you the well needed speed and dizzy that you would like. The dizzy from confusionshot in BH lasts alot longer so you can control people better. Well you'll lose counterattack and ranged mitigation so its up to you really. To be a good carbineer you really need to either stack alot of defenses or pick up BH mods.

As to beating melee, yea its hard. Just use PSGs and stun armor against fencers and get a 90% no stun helm to put on if you meet a swordsman.

Riflemen in my experience are alot easier to beat. 38% stuh helm + Imperial PSG = Teh win. They're usually very weak to states and posture changes. Blind and dizzy is your friend here. Get as close as you can to him while he's blind and he can't hit you worth anything.

Doesn't an elite have no armor pierce?

Actually, you're simply suffering from substantial damage output due to your Carbine. At 79 speed, you'd be speedcapping 1.9 weapon speeds.. so your 1.6 is great.

However, 380 damage on a Laser Carbine.. doesn't cut, unfortunately. We're underdogs because of that. 80% energy armor and Ranged Mitigation means you'll be inflicting little to nothing. Your only hope would be to dizzy/KD, but as you stated, against Fencers.. this is hard.. and against Riflemen.. they usually outdamage you.

My recommendation? Either try to get your hands on +11 more SEAs - you'll be at 90, and can speedcap a 4.0 weapon. That means that you won't need to rely on speed slices or speed powerups (if that's what you're using) and can actually easily get a Laser Carbine in the 530 max damage range with base tissues and a good damage slice.

If getting speed SEAs is a problem, then Ben'jai's suggestion of mixing up Bounty Hunter is actually a *great* option. You'll be sacrificing your Pistoleer defenses, however.

That said, these days PvP has simply become a test of equipment and templates. Many you'll fight are spending that Politican SP on something else, which gives them a 200% advantage.. litterally. It's saddening indeed.. but hopefully the Combat Balance will address this issue.

Keep in mind that currently, Riflemen and Fencers are a bit overpowered. The feared Stun Baton and ScatterHit are getting looked at, as are rifle speeds. So don't just despair yet.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

I doubt there is any way to fit BH into my template. I could drop all the the pistoleer 0/0/3/0 but then I would have to pick up novice scout along with all the exploration tree. I would then have to pick up Novice Bounty Hunter and then the Carbine tree. I doubt there is any room for that. Politician is a bit of a curse but I like having the chance to administrate through Politician. My city is dependent upon me to be there for them. I can't just quit mayor and do as I please.

I suppose the only way to even be effective in pvp is to drop Carbineer and go for a profession that is currently overpowered. I wish that wasn't true...

No really, I ran that template through my profession calc, it works. You can get Master Politican, BH 0400, and 2 and 3/4's of lines in carbineer.

Just grind factional missions while grinding your new template. Might be a little slower than quenkers or something but its still decent xp if you group with someone or an ATST to get high level missions. Since your on chilastra, there usually is a soloing group at mining outpost to get high level missions, then there is an imperial mission terminal at Novaent outpost. Khatover is also good for factional missions.
