Thread: Why I am not surrendering my carbine skills...
I'm laughing my head off at all of this, you know.
Go ahead and turn in your carbines. Pick up a pistol or a rifle. Heck, go get a /slitherhorn/. Go play "chase the flavor of the month class". Good riddance to you, if you're just here to find the uberest character template at any given moment. As for me?
I'm through runnin'.
I picked up carbines, and I'm staying with carbines. Why?
Good question. I'll tell you why:
- Mind damage is currently unhealable and Eye Shot is uber. But not forever... This is a known problem with balance, and it will be corrected. Take a look for yourself: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Development&message.id=476570#M476570
Go pick up a rifle or become a bounty hunterto inflict mind damage - I'll be laughing when what's uber today is not tomorrow and you're left scrambling to find a new flavor of the month. I'll still be using my carbine. - Pets are out of control, and running the zoo. But not forever... This too, is a known problem with balance, and it too will be corrected. Don't believe me? Holo just posted today, asking how we want to see melee'ers fixed so that they, and not creatures, become our "tank" class.
In addition to Holo's ideas, I favor inflictingPvP damage reduction on ALL pets. The Rancor's not so scary when it doesn't two-shot you,or that AT-ST doesn't kill you in one hit. I favor reducing the amount a pet gains agro when fighting mobs, too, to better balance pets in PvE assupport and not the main battle tanks they are now. Take a look, and make your opinion known to all: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=GCW&message.id=23657
When the dust settles, though, I'll still be using my carbine. - I hear a lot of anguished screaming about our "loss of crowd control". It's true, we took one for the team with the KD/PC nerf. But let's face it - we were pretty uber if we were soloingred mobs without even letting them get close enough to hit us. Clearly, we were overpowered by the developer's intent that "no one will solo a red mob". If a red con was supposed to rip me a new one, then I've been living on a LOT of borrowed time, and so havewe all.
But have you stopped to think about what happens when Full Auto Area starts inflicting dizzy that sticks and Charge Shot 2 works? We are the crowd control class. We will continue to be the crowdcontrol class. Making itharder for people to solodoes not change that - it only forces everyone to start forming crowds for us to control.Make no mistake. The devs are going to keep right on nerfing until everyone starts requiring a group to hunt.
...but that's when we'll come into our own. I'll still be using my carbine. - A carbine looks like a submachine gun, and in SWG, it acts like one. I like my two-handed, death-dealing, blaster-bolt vending machine. Who needs an anti-aircraft cannon? Who cares if the pistoleers can pistol twirl? I'm carrying something that looks exactly like what it is - a tool to inflict pain on the other guy by putting moreshots downrange than anyone else -not a twirly show-off toy orsome mutant bazooka-rifle offspring. (Plus, the chicks love it when I'm wearing my stormtrooper armor and using an E11.) Style counts for something... unless we're all just a bunch of powergaming nutcases.
Me: "Can I help you citizen? You want to borrow my carbine? Nah... Sorry. I'm still using it."
I'm tired of typing, and my wrists hurt. I'm sure you all have a good reason to keep using a carbine. Think about it before you ditch your skills in haste - I'll still be using my carbine, because there will be good reasons to use one. This too, shall pass.
"The devs are going to keep right on nerfing until everyone starts requiring a group to hunt."
See that bothers me, alot. I hate being forced into grouping, as aside from my guild members, 90% of the people in this game are people I'd much rather tell to F-off before I'd ever THINK of grouping with them.
And I'm a crazy powergamer that doesn't care about style.

You play a chef... and think we're borked? Man, even I'm not nuts enough to play a chef.

Do you ever get the feeling you'rein the wrong place?
No, seriously. This is a multiplayer game, by both definition and design. If you don't like most people, this game isn't really designed for you - and most MMOGs aren't. They view grouping as a good dynamic, from a design standpoint... because it promotes a community that will make the game last longer. In other words, having groups keeps people paying. This makes good business sense - and you're going to see this philosophy reflected here. Count on it.
Now, on the other side of things: If you like 10% of the people in the game... how do you find out which sort of person a player is if you don't group with them?

Yes, this is a multiplayer game, but that doesn't mean that grouping should be required at all times. Not everyone has the time to spend to form a group and go hunting together. When I have only two or so hours in the evening to enjoy this game, I don't always want to spend half of that time just getting a group together. I solo a lot because I don't always have the time do do more. When I do have the time, I group, and I enjoy it immensely. However, one of the main reasons I love this game and certain other MMORPGs is the community that I become a part of, regardless of whether I am grouping with them all the time. Forcing players to group if they want any chance of survival is excessive, and unnecessary. Becoming a part of the game community does not require grouping. Solo players still interact and communicate with others, just not so much when it comes to grouping for hunts or missions. Is that so bad?
Bad?
Absolutely not!
I played an EQ Necromancer -and believe you me, I got my fair share of soloing done. It's how I spent ALL of my time, or very nearly so. However, to the developer of both EQ and SWG,a forced-grouping atmosphere is like printing money. It is both desirable and intended that PCs be made to form interdependent groups in order to PvPor completehigh-level and endgame objectives. They will encourage grouping, and ifthis sort of environment doesn't form quickly enough, or in a fashion to their liking, you can bet they'll enforce it, by fair means or foul. (See also: Nerfs.)
No one raids Vex Thal solo in EQ. When the nerfs slow down, no one will be raiding Dathomir solo, either. Watch and see.
It's not that I think people shouldn't be able to solo, or even that I think that they shouldn't WANT to solo. It's just that I recognize the design architecture behind the game system, and that design is one of enforced grouping at the high end. This fits Star Wars continuity as well - most of the time, the main characters (analogous to the PCs of SWG) were in groups. They fought in groups, they goofed off in groups, they got captured by furry muppets using big honking nets in a group.
I'm merely addressing the response that some players don't like to be forced to group. The problem is that you're playing a game that's intended to make you do just that. You'll be able to solo to Master in every class, if you like. But it won't be as easy, and it won't be as fast. It certainly won't be as painless.
The point of all this is also the good news: Not only are WE being forced to group, so is everyone else. If Carbineers are to be the crowd control class, then we must have crowds to control. Enforced grouping, whether I personally agree with it or not, is the order of the day.
...but it'll only make carbineers stronger, because it's what we're made for. It's why we exist.

blah blah blah, thank you for inspiration Archon but, as you said they will look into brawler balance, and i bet it will be done before they fix carbs, we are the least population in the game next to freaking chefs, so they wont care if some of us leave the game cuz of nerfs or non fixed issues, as long as its not bounty hunters which is 1/3 of population.
I play a character with brawler skills. Believe me, we're broken, but we're not as broken as they are. We're also not as borked as Squad Leaders, Droid Engineers, or Bio Engineers. Until recently, Commandos would have made the list as well. We do have some problems. But compared to these folks, we've gotten off very light. Pay for beta or not - this could have been a lot worse.
I do think that you're being somewhat over-cynical. Why should the developers want to lose money, even from the LEAST populated class? Even if they did, there's more of us than there are Droid Engineers, I'd bet. Go look around, and you'll see it. Sure, there are new DEs every day...but then half of them quit when they find out how badly screwed up their class is. Stick with it, and I think you'll see some changes worth your Laser Carbine, in the end.
I know I'll still be using my carbine.
This post makes me feel good about my choice to dump master mark for carbineer, and then stay with it! I was tempted to switch to pistoleer too, but I decided to stick with my carbine after all. I keptmy pistol specialist, but I use my pistol less and less each day...
Anyone disappointed with carbineer should go check out the Commando forum. It's like Christmas day to most of those folks. We will get our day too. Patience is key! If the commandoes can be patient--as FUBAR as they were--we sure can!
You realize Dizzy has no effect on mobs right? I have fire knockdown that knockdowns and dizzies.
Post-patch if I use it and it knockdowns and dizzies the mobs get right back up...this is the way is was before the patch as well. Dizzy just has no effect.
