Thread: Begging: What's the deal?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but I have run across a few beggars spamming for help in a coupl eof starports. Not alot, mind you, but... these guys have an Elite profesion tag. For example, one guy was asking for credits so he could advance up his skill tree, but he had a master architect tag on. When I came back a few minutes later its was gone, and he took off his composite armor, but it kinda got me mad. Clearly, this guy didn't need the help, it was sport for him.

As a result, I am afriad that I am less likely to assist a noob with a few creds, so never know when you are going to end up on some list of "suckers who gave me money."

Has anyone else come across this, or am I just re-hashing an old topic?

I am playing on Ahazi and I dont see it a lot, but should I see someone begging, I dont just give money. I start talking to the people, and if they dont need the money, they will be pretty quiet and sooner or later will stop talking. If they are friendly and keep talking, I either point them to the mission terminals and maybe help them with a mission, or I have them do something for me for an above-average payment (get some herbivore meat, find a high concentration of a good resource, it all depends on their skillset). Most people not really needing the money will bail out at that point for sure.

I am constantly annoyed by the beggars in the game. I have no sympathy for any of them, whether they are noobs or veterans players.

Someone once pointed out that there is a magical box in every NPC City (and most player towns as well) that spits out credits for just a little effort. This magical box is called a "Mission Terminal." It exists on every server. It is not hard to find. I told one beggar about this magical box and he replied that at best he could get 1k per mission from it with his current skills. I immediately /addignored him. I haven't bothered trying to talk to any of the other beggars I see in game anymore. Anyone who asks for tips gets /addignored now. I don't care who they are or what they are doing or how long (or short) a time they have been playing.

It all comes down to laziness and greed on the part of the beggars.

The funny thing is, most people who hit the /tip XXXX keys don't even bother to look at who is asking. They see "I'm new, can you help me get to <player city name here> with a few credits?", and they toss off 1 or 5k. I always hit /tar (name) and /examine when this happens to me - 9 out of 10 times I see someone with 75 badges, a list of Master professions a mile long, and wearing comp armor. They make it a habit to be out of your line of vision, assuming you can't click on them to target. I called one guy on it once, and his response was:

"Been doing this since I started the game - I have 50 million in the bank and haven't run amission ONCE"

I have no problem breaking off 20k to help a brand new player. Thing is, even NOW, the person who looks new may just be a re-rolled character with 100 million in a friend's account waiting to be transferred to him.

Long story short - I don't give out handouts or loans anymore. If they ask for 5k so they can get a weapon - I ask them what profession they are, and offer to buy them the appropriate weapon, etc.

Wanna guess how many "Nah, I want to buy it myself" responses I get?

Well the deal is the beggars are there because people give them stuff, same reason why the homeless dudes hang out on the onramps to the freeway.

Why work when someone will give you what you need? Thats the premise

And Ill bet you those beggars, specially the persistent ones are turning around and selling what they are given

Think of it, you could prolly beg a few thousand credits, maybe even 10's of thousands of credits as well as peoples handme down armor, and all you have to do is ask people to give it to you. You then turn around and sell the items for even more credits.

I would even wager those beggars then take all these credits and turn around and sell them to the likes of IGE for r/l $$$

and all they have to do is stand there with their hands stuck out asking you.

Solution, dont give to the beggars, pretty simple.

Begging is either a con or simple laziness.

i dont mind tipping a newbie some creds and offering to give him some of my time to run missions with him and get him started. i really would hate to be called a jerk in this game, and tipping someone a few creds is really no problem at all. guy in my guild is tossign grenades at things for combat xp and those grenades have drained his bank account. today we were out all day slaughtering krayts and didnt get one pearl and he was so disappointed. i tipped him a few 100k and told him chin up, and we killed some more krayts and got a pearl

Ive only asked for money once, it was 50k tho, i got it, and this was due to lazyness as on my other character I had over a mil at the time. However, i offered to pay him back in 10 minutes time, just cos i was quite a way from a city and my other char doesnt have jtl to travel. So to save myself 20 minutes, I asked kindly, and offered to pay back. He said no tho

But that isnt cos i didnt want to run a mission, just i was a little short at that point on that character. I think people just standing and begging to earn money is lame, and must be a dam boring way to get money.

i ignore beggers simply because i know that a new charactor can get novice artisan for 100 creds sample for 5 minute to get the resources to make a gas surveyor go survey out some high concentration of inert gas and them make 30k in 30 min running artisan gas survey missions with the rental vehicle that they get at the start
