I don't know if it fits the bill, but every now and then, when I see someone who is obviously new to the game, I do what I can to help. I talk to them about their trees, what they want to accomplish, and tip them some credits (20-50k) to get them started. Once in a while I bump into one of them later and just the thank you's that I get are nice.

What I mean by "Reverse Begging" is being pro-active in your servers economy helping out those who needmonetaryassistence the most. Believe it or not this is a fun wayto actually help stimulate more growth on your server as a whole.

Here's a little story to try to explain what I'm talking about. When JTL came out, veteran players were given a "reward" of 75K credits for each character they had - even new ones they made on other servers. I have only one primary character I play (I don't have time to work on multiple charaters as I am a fairly casual player ) so I got to thinking, all those credits on those other 'toons' I could be playing are going to waste. So as a change of pace from my regular routine I decided to spend an evening being altusitic across as many servers as I could.

I generated a number of new characters and searched out those people I felt could use a hand up. On one server I was a female twilek crafter and I came across a novice droid engineer trying to sell low-end droids outside the Mos Eisley spaceport. He was doing a great job of roleplaying but there just weren't any customers. It was obvious after /examineing him, that he was indeed a struggling DE and desparately needed the income his non-selling droids should have been providing. I pretended to be a long lost childhood friend (he was also a Twilek) who was happy to see him still following his dream and tipped him 75K. He was absolutely stunned.

On another server I played a Sullustan "sailor" who liked to dance jigs. I went to the Coronet Cantina searching for an entertainer who looked like they needed help and seemed truely dedicated to their trade (not AFK, not someones alt). After striking up a conversation with a novice dancer (once again using /examine to verify), I asked her if she could teach me a few new steps. She was quite polite and though there were other customers around she took the time to try (of course I couldn't learn anything - no XP). But I tipped her 75K for the "lesson" anyway and told her I was a patron of the arts who enjoyed helping up and coming talent. Again, another stunned response.

Those were just two of many people I helped that night. I avoided anyone who had a guild tag (they already have a support system) or had a combat profession title (it's relatively easy to get help/money with those skills). Point of all this being, those people I helped out will use that money to buy other items, thus putting money back into the economy making it grow.

Of course you don't need tomake a new charcter on another sever to start "reverse begging" - you can do this with any character that has some spare cash . The amount you give could range from 100 credits to 100K all depending on the persons situation and how generous you feel. I found it a really fun way stimulate the economy and help people who deserve it at the same time.

This happened to me when I first started... Out of the blue someone tipped me 100k. It wasn't a bank tip so I had no idea who did it and I was too much of a noob to scroll up the chat window. I can't say it was the reason I stayed in the game, but that pleasnt surprise certainly did make my attitudes about this game and its participants more positive at a formative time.

I still dont know who that person is, so I can't thank them directly. I will pay it forward as soon as I can divert some credits away from building my business. Thanks whoever you are.

I see it as part of my duty as a helper is to play with a new player, showing them the terminals, running missions with them, and showing them an all around immersive good time. We need to build their self confidence, their fun factor, and theirknowledge of how to make it on their own. The best, most important thing we advanced players can do is to take the time and play at the level of the new player, rather than force the new player to play at ours. It takes time and a willingness to be open in order to make it happen. Sadly, many of us don't do that as much as we should sometimes.

I thought this post was going to be about responding to beggars with begging yourself and watching the hillarity ensue.

Darn...

i do this routinly

my shop is near Mos Eisly (stupid i know) so i come across a lot of new players. they all get 10k from me. the ones who actualy thank me (i am always surprised that not more bother to thank - i think they just dont realise what happened) get a further 50k

i also reoutinly buff noobs for free, or ill take 2k to make THEM feel btr about it...

Its so much easier to get going with even an extra 10-20k

Couldn't agree with you more.

On the other side of it, I started an alt for a friend this weekend, working toward BE. This scout had 1000 credits and no JTL, so times were tough starting out I ran a few recon missions for credits, stopping to kill chubas along the way. I'm sure I looked like I knew what I was doing, so as a few "Master ****" happened by, they didn't offer any help. That's fine with me, as I looked like I was right on track, was dropping intimidates, running in circles, etc...

I'll stop and help someone along who is getting beat up by 3 or more agros or just running away. Those are the folks who don't yet have a clue, and just need to be pointed in the right direction. Remember, once upon a time, we were all that person at some point.

I'll just take this space to thank those that have helped me. One guy came up an helped me kill a critter my very first time, and now we hand out a lot, and it's lots more fun that way.

I started the game not expecting help from anyone, and quite a few people have helped me out out of the blue, it really does make your day.

And, I plan on helping others too, it's the least I can do since others have given me something and wouldn't let me give them anything in return (ok, so I had nothing anyway.... )

I'll try to give some new players some credits sometimes, but you have to be careful: they might be an alt.

if i get a tell from some newbie asking a question on how to do something, i'm likely to tell them what they need and send a tip. not always but often.

if i get a tell from someone asking for a handout, i tell them to run a mission.

your concept of reverse begging is kind of the same idea, you were giving money to a DE who was genuinely trying to sell his droids. not spamming for tips.

basically, i totally agree with you...be generous with those in need who are trying to help themselves.

but i still think most of the newbies just asking for handouts need to be /forcechoked for awhile

I've done that, but with roleplayers instead of just new players. Whenever I see someone roleplaying (and doing it well, especially if they're enduring taunts by others who don't share their gaming priorities) I'll tip them a large amount of credits. Sometimes I roleplay it out, sometimes I just do it anonymously. Like the original poster, I don't do it for any pat on the back to say how generous I am. I do it because I want people to enjoy themselves in the game and, in the case of RPers, to be rewarded for making a real attempt to create a community in the game.
