sorry phaelyn but I'm a programmer and I totally disagree and it is quite disputable.

TRUE - any change to code can have unforseen effects resulting in client stability, or bug creation. and yes, this game is quite prone to these effects.

but ask yourself why....

they have how many people working on how much code? there's the reason for the stability and bugs. how many different SETS of people have they gone through. every developer and group of developers has their own programming style, and when you change programmers or teams out or add new people it makes it really difficult. a simple calculator program would be an easy addition to the code and would more than likely not cause any unforseen results because its simple, basic, and could probably be done by one person.

my point is not to discredit that putting a calc into the game would cause problems, its the fact that you say that WHAT you say is indisputable... and it totally is very disputable

I thank you, pircio for your insight - It is my error for generalizing to the extrme to hammer home my point that any chance *could* have unforseeable effects. You illustrate why it's not likely - But at the same time, you admit it's not impossible.

I just wish more people could understand my concerns OTHER than the ones they latch onto. In this instance, my issue with coding was latched onto. Somehow that took all the focus away from my other points - Maybe I'm a dreamer, but I honestly DO feel that what we as a community should be asking for are things that benefit the community, and not some portion thereof. I'm not against an in-game calculator. I most likely as a shipwright would use it, as I do the calculator at my right hand now. it just galled me that someone perceived it as a required thing to be added. I would (And I hope others would as well) much rather see concerns such as the CU/RB, fixing broken mods, etc taken into account long before I would the calculator.

After much debate I am sorry to tell you all that your debate is wasted. There is a calculator built in already, it works most efficiently in populated areas (Coro SP for example). The other day i used the following command:

/yell 24*67=

there then came back a number of answers which i averaged and hey presto!

Of course i had to tab to the windows calculator to average them... hmmm.... back to the drawing board

But on a serious note it is discussion that keeps the game going in new directions, as long as we don't get bogged down in minutia

Cheers!

How this isn't in the game already is beyond me... Should be very simple to do as well...

Any complaints against this are completely invalid, program or immersion-wise. Adding acalculatorshould be a very easy, stand alone system. I don't remember the network status window causing any bugs. Or the stat modifiers window. I don't think a cave with a keypad door ever got bugged either. To me, its anti-immersion to have all that technology ingameand not be able to have our characters simply multiply two numbers using a datapad.

I hope someone with creative input at SOE is actually monitoring this forum. There are lots of good and necessary ideas like this one.

Then we should troll all requests in those boards because others not fixed. Those are IDEA boards, you can easily type "this round answer" to every thread in that board. "Fix something before adding something new"...

I use the notepad to keep track of when my harvestor needs more maint, but if they would add a mail system for this that would be cool. You would receive a mail when your harvestor had like less than a week's maint in it. I also use my notepad to keep track of my lots that are being rented, items for my vendors that people have offered me (to keep track of when they siold so i can pay them back).

If I had a notepad next to my computer I would probably lose it..

I say "yes" for the calculator in-game. Im a doc and calculating the amount of resources needed to make my meds is accential. Seriously, what are we loosing by including an in-game calculator? If it was included, either someone would be glad to have it at convience or they wouldn't care. Please stop griefing over this saying "there isnot point, just use a calc next to your keyboard". And yes your right, the math may be easy to compute, but when i get home from work I dont want to look for my calculator or try to do math in my head. Think about it, whats easier, hitting Ctrl-C in-game or searching your desk drawers for a calculator.....convenience people.. convenience...

The suggestion to add an ingame calculator is known to the DEVs, since it has been a topic a few timesbefore. A number of nameless people (whom share something in common with me) have broched this topic (on a forum that will remain nameless).

Just wanted to voice my support for an ingame calculator. Yes, you can have a calculator sitting by your computer or you can even ctrl-alt to the one included with Windows; however both of which suggestions are not a bonus feature that is included with the game. SWG has a economy that is completely player based. SWG is filled with vitual merchants, who spend many hours providing goods to their customers. For some professions, such as Droid Engineer, where numbers play a large role in the calculation of values, an ingame calculator would be a much welcomed function.

If you are like myself, keeping a calculator sitting by my desk is a good idea, but doesn't always work as intended. Having a child, a couple of cats, and a girlfriend who forgets to put things back in their place makes having a calculator near at hand a sometimes difficult task. As for the Windows calculator, having to switch in and out of the SWG client every time you wish to use a calculator can be a rather good test of ones patients, especially if you have a computer that has difficulty running the SWG client without the added load of switching back and forth.

A clientside ingame calculator would be an incredible addition, to someone who likes to play the numbers, when it comes to figuring out the maximum experimentation percentages when using a new resource. It would also help for figuring out the DPS on a new weapon, or trying to see what the timer would be on a new buff pack. The uses for an ingame calculator are near limitless.

To make it "immersive", add it as a tab to the datapad. I think the same should be done with /notepad. Make the datapad actually...a datapad, not a holding pen for pets.

/sign for ingame calculator

And for all those who think ALT-Tabbing or a pocket calculator would be fine: It's simply NOT.
