I agree with you Phaelyn. I wasn't a player of SWG when JTL came in but actually it is a tactic a lot of companies use: make a beta worse or different than it will really be so when it is released players think "ah, it isn't as bad as expected" so you forget is not as good as they said it was going to be.

So on the question: what economy? the answer is so obvious... SOE economy, not players economy, is what it's all about.

Back the reality train up a bit. Did you really just say it's a tactic of companies (a software company in this particular instance) to beta buggier code than they actually release?

I've been a professional developer since 1991. In that time I've worked all over the country as a consultant for some VERY large companies, and some very small companies. There are a few constants that seem to apply to software compnies.

  1. No matter who's in charge of IT, marketing drives software development

  2. No matter how extensively you test code, bugs will be found upon release

  3. No group of developers thinks alike

  4. Often the best ideas are left out of releases because they take the most time to develop

However, I have NEVER heard of a development team holding back code from Beta simply to wow people once the software is released into production. You WANT ALL of the code to be tested in Beta, because that's where 90% of the bugs are found. The last thing you want is for surprises after the initial release that could force the development team to work around the clock patching software (which instantiates it's own set of problems).

I've also never heard of this tactic in regards to products. The principle is true in some companies though especially with quarter earnings and losses reports. Like report a conservative figure which will reap greater rewards when you beat expectations, or steady shareholder confidence in a time of instability even though later the earnings report is lower than expected.

You also bring another point to mind. I'm not experienced in the ways of big or small software development, but in my own amaturish hacking (in the literal sense, not ub3r l33t sense) my way through a few programs I've often started by testing things that I wanted to put in, but never made it to the final project. It's possible that perhaps this CU will really be more of a CUrb. That is, most of the major changes won't go through, and the solid good ones will. There are some good points to what they're doing on TC.....just not the majority of change, IMO, of course.

A great point. In C++, there's nothing like a good old // to comment out code you know doesn't work

I thought it might be fun to go back and look at this a few months post-CU...

I'm in agreement on Phaelyn on this.

People are really overreacting right now. Its like a mob of chickens with their heads cut off.

From what I've read on the forums lately, the CU is thought to lead to / cause all of the below:

  • Turn SWG into every other MMO (apparenlty they are all alike except this one) - I think this is a matter of opinion.

  • Make armor completely useless - Not completely useless as long as you are an Elite Combat Profession (working as intended)

  • Make buffs useless - Pretty close to accurate as far as Doc buffs are concerned. I haven't bothered with them more than a couple times since the CU and haven't noticed much difference on the few times I did get them.

  • Make it so that you can't kill anything worse than a durni without 8 people grouped. - Fairly accurate depending on your profession(s).

  • Completely ruin all crafting - Not ALL but combined with all the loot in ROTW, crafting has taken quite a hit post-CU.

  • Make it so crafters will be repeatedly 1 hit incapped by krettles case we can't wear armor (please disregard that armor is also now useless) -Most kreetles don't aggro without being attacked first, but I've been on the recieving end of a one-hit incap a number of times with my crafter. A few of those were to CL6-7 MOBs.

  • Either cause massive inflation or destroy the market for all crated goods (take your pick) - It seems to have done a little of both. I've seen a number of crafters stop playing after the CU/ROTW due to their inability to sell items that can compete with easily looted stuff. The growing scarcity of crafters left a vacuum that encouraged the remaining crafters to raise their prices to cover the increased demand from those not interested in the looted crap.

  • Ruin Roleplay - Can't really comment as I never experienced much RP pre-CU either.

  • Destroy the Entertainer profession - Destroy is a little strong... completely ruin? Yeah, that would be a little more accurate. They still exist but really have very little reason to do so.

  • Make people cancel at least 2 of their 4 subscriptions - Beats the hell out of me, but my guild leader seems to keep taking over more and more accounts post-CU.

  • Force people to get more accounts just to be able to play the game (sinister plan by SOE to make $$) - I can't speak for everyone, but I picked-up another because I got tired of never being able to find the crafters I needed.

  • Everyone will CTD every 2 seconds. - It didn't crash EVERYONE, but there were a number of problems with this (not much different than SWG launch though...)

  • ATST's will be invincible and rebels will never be able to kill one, ever. - Nope. AT-STs are fodder for any rebel CL70+ and managable for those lower than that.

  • Every crafter who has high quality resources stockpiled will find their resources are instantly worthless post CU. - I can't comment as I wasn't one of those people nor did I know any of them.

  • CM's will be super uber after CU (but thats fair cause we all know how gimpy they've been) - CM definitely is preferable to Doc and is a useful addition to just about any combat profession.

  • Everyone's experimentation tapes will be useless. - Not true as far as I can tell.

  • NS biceps will be deleted or turned into pink shirts or something like that. - No idea. Don't own one or know anyone that does.

  • 70% of players hate the CU. - Can't comment. I personally like it quite a bit, but there are a good number that still piss and moan about it.

  • SOE is rigging the polls to make it look like people like the CU when they don't. If the poll says people don't like it then it mysteriously changes afterwards somehow. - No comment. I don't pay much attention to SWG polls (or most polls in general)

  • With the CU skill respec a Jedi will able to go from Padawan to Double master overnight! - Not overnight, but coupled with the double experience weeks, they managed to do it much, much faster than they ever could before.

  • Armorsmiths will either stop making armor or they will charge 1M per suit. - A lot of them did quit, but the suits I've been buying only run 300-500k.

  • Post CU a Master rifleman /MBH / 0004 CM will be able to destroy a Jedi without the Jedi even getting in range. - There are a number of Jedi complaining that this is the case. Don't know since I don't hunt Jedi nor do I have most of those professions.

  • I also just read that for CU they are going to hand out ADK's to newbies. - Nope. It's still the 12 month Vet reward.

  • EVERYTHING and EVERYONE is getting nerfed - Hard to say since the term has been so bastardized. A great many of them seem to think they've been nerfed, but I would call most of it balancing.

  • The CU is really about turning SWG into an FPS instead of an RPG - I wouldn't go that far...

  • weapons have a set max damage which they can do. This renders acklay, geo, and krayt weapons...useless - Not useless, but far less useful than they used to be (which might be a good thing).

A number of those items are direct quotes. Try and guess which ones!

Wow. Dunno why ya dug that up.

Ya some of the doom and gloom was accurate like doc buffs are pretty much dead. But much of the sky didn't fall.

Just going thru some of my old bookmarks and thought it might be interesting to see how accurate some of the Gloom-n-Doom® predictions were. Some were pretty accurate while others were a little overboard.

I agree with you partially and I'm therefore waiting til the CURB goes live to make my final sarcastic comments.

I shouldn't have bothered holding back. My personal doom and gloom predictions are now a reality. If they could have left the effects of the CU on the combat side of things, that would be a different story.
