Exactly right, bluejanus.

Which is why I consider it more likely that one fine day the devs will say, "Servers A, B, C, and D will be deleted. We will be creating a new server X" and thenallowcharacters on A, B, C,and D to move toX (probably for free) on a first-come, first-served basis.

Not perfectly fair, but better than forcing people to take the leftovers of a surviving server.

There will be a huge influx of new players over the holidays with the release of RoTS and the SWG x-pack. Hopefully SoE will direct some of that traffic to the low pop servers.

Nah that will probably happen naturally. The very heavy servers are a lagfest.

The best SOE can do to not piss off the population thus losing more accounts is to do the free character transfer with items and credits to those who want it. Make it a voluntary thing. Or market low population servers to newbies so that if they join they get some type of instant vet award.

Since all stats on all things are not the same thats where the trouble comes in. You could completely nerf everything a player has done over the amount of time they have been playing if you do that.

I think the first thing I suggested is closer to happening then a server merger. Its less complicated for the devs to pull off and allows the player to dictate what happens to their character rather then letting someone else dictate it.

Server mergers would really be the death of the game. Do you really think if you merge two servers with populations of 5,000 each you'd have a server of 10,000? I think it'd be the straw that breaks the camel's back for alot of players and you'd still end up with a server population not much higher than 5,000.

What makes you think the servers have a population of 5,000?

Also, the fact SOE successfully merged their EQ servers and it wasnt the death of that game kind of shoots that theory down. (and EQ had bigger player populations than SWG ever had)

SWG is technically harder to merger servers with but its not impossbile, and the fact that so many servers have such small populations, they really stand to gain if they get merged together.

Clear out the dead accounts and their in-game debris, you would quickly forget about that 5000 number and start thinking more like 500.

And how many of those subscriptions are owned by single players? I have two accounts..I hear some folks have as many as ten. Even if they "2 box" or more, it's still really a lower popluation actually in the game playing than the actualsubscriber count, not to mention accounts that are cancelled and just counting down to expiration.

I would love to seewhat percentage of people have more than one account.

They need to do something because I see the same people night after night on my server...there are new toons every once in a while and the majority of new toons I see are unlocked Jedi (every 3 weeks now) and credit farmers.

The people I see every night are at Dantooine MO, all other NPC cities are dead except Bestine for PvP occasionally and player cities are even more dead, only Jedi hang outat thoseto avoid getting on the terms. Mos Eisely has a few noobs hanging out looking around and killing bugs and geckos...

No matter what they do it will never look like the old days when Coronet, Bestine, AH, and Theed had 50 or more people running around doing whatever and any given time.

The last indicator of population is the bazaar...look andsee what is for sell by location. Find much on Dath, Rori, Talus, Lokor even the minor cities on Corelia, Naboo or Tat?

When I shop, most everything I see is at the Mining Outpost, Bestine or Coronet...

I used 5,000 as an arbitrary figure. It could just as easily be 1, 50, 1,000 or 10,000. The point stands.

EQ and EQ2is somewhat different in the fact that their crafting is generic, in SWG it isn't. Therefore the theory isn't shot down at all, but infact an extremely important point.

There are what..200k-250k paying subscribers to SWG? Something like that. That 5k figure is not unreasonable.
