Thread: Inflation

I think the SWG economy needs inflation. The Dev's keep trying deflation (low mission rewards, etc).

Inflation allows for movement of the economy which is good.

Now the Dev's would need to keep mission payouts going up as well as maintenance costs etc.

Not a really well thought out line here, but I was thinking about it (real economies need inflation to be healthy, just not too much) and thought I would through it in here and see what people think.

Any thoughts? What is good? What is bad? Hum....

What would this accomplish? It doesn't change anything to put more money into the player's pocket by increasing mission payouts and then taking that money right back because you've raised maintenance costs.

Aside from your question, HNelson, why does a real economy need inflation to be healthy?

ANYTIME you get something for nothing, or get a lot for very little, it causes inflation.I have definately witnessed inflation in the past 4-5 months.

The mission payouts are still disproportionate to the group dynamic scams (I've heard of ppl getting 4million in an hour). AFK faction farming from 1xp NPCs, space loots being bought by junk dealers for more than they're worth, kashyyyk proton carbines and other ready-looted non-rare premium weapons etc., increased loot and spawn rates on krayt dragons and other used-to-be rare spawns and NPCs, double xp weeks, no maintenence weeks, veteran rewards coming out of our ears, in-game gifts for buying out-of-game packs or expansions (bark speeders and the like), doctor buffs that require no resources at all,and I'm sure there are more....

These ALL contribute to an inflated economy. An SWG credit that is easier to obtain and means, and is worth, less, that is inflation, and it is definately happening.

I play the game because I like crafting and being a part of the player-driven economy. I do not play combat characters. (If I wanted to play shoot-em-up I would have played another game entirely) Recent game developements have underminded the integrity ofthe player driven economypart ofSWG, and have decreased quality of gameplay.

Go back and check the trade forums from late 2003/early 2004 and you'll see that the price has actually come down on a lot of items rather than going up.

Looks like you are the one that needs to read the old trade forum threads. I spent an hour reading last summers auctions. I failed to see things selling for 20, 30, 40, 60 million credits. It justrarely happenedback then, unless it was for a jetpack or mando armor. Look at todays auctions and tens of millions of credits are changing hands like they are worth 1/10th as much as they used to.... that's because they are.

I do not believe inflation is based on high end luxury items. Afterall if the inflation index was based off the prices of Picasso's paintings then infation would be rediculous. Inflation is based on every day commodities so to determine if inflation is occuring you need to look at normal crafted itmes and thier prices. These have not changed significantly.

feel like I'm replying to the same post over and over.

Well, back in the days of the holo grind resources were going for 3 cpu, just for crap, so people could get jedi.

Then there was the saber resources. 1000+ CPU.

Then there's rare rare items, etc.....

Yes there are more credits on the servers. The credits don't seem to be devaluing much though. I once saw a power hammer go for over a billion credits (yes, billion). Was it like then when the game first started? No, there wasn't a billion credits on the server. But over time because people can print their own money, it got like that....buuuuut, because of people quitting who had hoarded billions of credits, those credits leave the galaxy....unless they sell them all to a web-site, who will then broker them out at about 33k / 1 cent.

you dont judge inflation based on a roll royce, but on a loaf of bread.

Did the price of a grind weapon go up much, grind armor, basic needs,

+25 sea's, adk's, double capped weapons and so on are luxery items and you can judge inflation by them.

Was there items that could go for that 2003? no, there wasnt such a thing as "uber" weapons being sold in the way they are now.

Mind fire?,,,,

but yall may be right,,,, could be wrong to judge inflation on "luxury" items.

There certainly are more luxury items going for more credits,,, if that means nothing then that's cool.

If it means that the eventual evening out of who has the credits and general decrease in the value of the credit, hence, inflation because of too many credits in the system,, that's not cool.

I guess after posting and reading responses, I don't know for sure.

the devs have credit sinks in place to cope with inflation if they see it fit.

*ahem* if krayt (or other!) loot becomes more common, then it typically costs less.

My small corner of the economy shows most prices dropping. Be it deflation or a vendor search driven market correction, I don't know.

I don't know how clothing has fared.

And just about everything else crafted, weapon, armor, BE pets (or trained wild animals) have been tweaked, twisted, warped, redone, nerfed, expaneded, nerfed because the expansion was a bug, undergone massive resource requirement changes... I think I spent less on my padded armor of today than my old composite. And the stats are all different. It lasts longer. I can't really tell about protection after all the HAM changes anyway...
