Thread: How will we defend against mounted kiters (and other questions)
Sorry if it's been asked and answered, but I don't spend much time on the forums and you know how good the searching is ![]()
So if guys with guns can shoot from mounts, and I'm assuming mounted riders go faster than people on foot (otherwise what's the point?) then what will we do when kited by one? Are we basically SOL?
Also, will we start seeing NPCs on mounts?
Finally, if our mount is attacked, will the have a chance of freaking out and slipping from our control?
Teras Kasi: Earning Expert Precision Striking unlocks the certification for the Magnetic Grappling Hook. As seen in use by Boba Fett, the MGH can be used while on the back of a mount. The damage is minimal (5-10 damage), with the effect of bringing the opponent to the brawler for a chance at a hit, and allows for a40% chance of Stunning opponent.
One Handed: Earning Expert Fencing Finesse unlocks the certification for the Vibro Whip. The Vibro Whip can be used while on the back of a mount. The damage is mediocre (55-145) and allows for a 40% chance of Blinding the opponent.
Two Handed: Earning Expert Sword Finesse unlocks the certification for the Vibro Grapplink Hook. The Vibro Grapplink Hook has a large device at the end with various poison tipped prongs. The damage is above average (75-155) and allows for a 40% chance of Poisoning the opponent.
Polearm: Earning Expert Polearm Support Abilities unlocks the certification for the Vibro Halberd. The Vibro Halberd has incredible reach, extending as needed from an adjustable base near the grip. The damage is above average (95-135) and allows for a 40% chance of Dizzying the opponent.

How will we defend against mounted kiters?
I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but how about "run away" ?
Use hyberboleto make a point, "howcould you going to balancea foot soldieragainst people inaircraft dropping bombs on you from high altitude?"
One of the biggest reasons that MCH has been nerfed over and over again is because you can'tbalance this equation: "Pistoleer + MCH = Pistoleer" (unless MCH = 0)
You can't balance absolutely every combination.

Well this is certainly a good idea in some situations! I fully condone running away as necessary. And unlike some whiners, I don't expect to be able to compete with a mounted gunman while I'm on foot.
But I'd like a way to defend against a griefer who hunts people from "horseback" at a distance. If they were on foot, you can run to them and knock them down, or run away, and they can't easily catch you (and firing while running reduces aim).
But if a mount goes, say, twice as fast as someone on foot, then what happens? Two scenarios:
1) The attacker opens fire from 40m or more. You decide to chase him down, since you're pretty sure you can smack him down if you get close. So he just rides off to a distance of 60m, takes a couple shots at you, and rides off again. It's a kiter's dream to be able to outrun their prey.
2) The attacker opens fire from 40m or more. You decide to run away. You take off, and what does he do? He chases you down, until he's 25m and opens fire again. You keep running, and as soon as you are 60m away, he runs you down again. Never getting close enough for you to attack, but continually able to catch up to you.
3) The attacker opens fire from 40m or more. You decide to run away. You take off using burst run. How much faster is that? Twice as fast? Ok, so he chases you until you are tired, since the mount may be as fast as a burst run (otherwise, again, they are useless for most). Once you're tired, go to scenario 2.
See the problem? What are the devs doing to prevent this? Or is this simply the new reality for anyone on foot who wants to run missions that may garner them a TEF. There are already mission gankers, who will follow you from a faction mission terminal, waiting for you to start attacking enemy NPCs so they can start whacking you.
To be honest, the problem is similar for anyone on foot. If mounts are significantly faster than on foot, and you can shoot from dewback-back, thenyou basically canrun down anyone who's trying to escape. And when you get close, you can stop and get rid of a movement penalty, while they still suffer it running away. It seems like mounts would completely remove the "running away" option.

I see the problem... but I'm not sure that we should start screaming about it...
How do you balance a Marksman without mounts and without pets against a Marksman with mounts and with pets?
You can't. If the marksman is the same otherwise, then mounts and pets make them uneven.
And if you can't balance two identical characters (with and without mounts/pets) then how are you going to expect the devs to balance every profession against every other profession with every possible combination of skill points?
1. firing from astill mount should have ahigh negative adjust mod to accuracy
2. firing from a moving mount should have an even greater negative adjust mod to accuracy
3. firing from a mount that just came to a stop after running (and is panting hard) should have a negative adjust mod to accuracy
4. blasters going off around the head of your mount should have a chance to startle the mount, causing you to be bucked off or for the mount to start rearing uncontrollably forcing you to calm the mount at the loss of your ability to fire your weapons

It's not a question of balance. A man on a horse with a sword will generally outmatch a man on the ground with a sword. A man on a horse with a gun will almost always outclass a man on foot with a sword. I'm not asking that I should be able to go toe-to-toe with a marksman on a Dewback.
The question is that in this game world, where PvP can take on the lawlessness of the wild west, do we need to prevent making griefing so easy that it becomes commonplace? It'shappened in other games and even herein some instances (leading to various changes in overt/covert, TEF, etc.).
If we want to prevent mounted griefers from running roughshod over anyone without a mount, what should be done? I can just imagine the "Hell's Angel's" PA, a group of thugsriding through town on their Dewbacks, slapping around little old artisans
Ok, hyperbole aside, I'm just trying to start a discussion on something that I hadn't seen a lot of talk about yet.
