Its still working for me =/
Yes, I can confirm that the bleedshot technique still works to give UA xp, as of October 20, 2003.
I took my wookiee up to UA-IV last week so he could start smuggler, butthat UA xp was a huge pain. Since I'm a wookiee, I cannot wear armor- only a PSG which gave out quickly due to all the damage I was receiving (getting incapped all the time is a good way to wear out any armor!).Also I did not want to burn up pistol xp going to novice pisoleer becuase pistol xp is used in the smuggler profession. But, I did have healthshot 1 (bleedshot) which did help (from marksman-pistol-IV).
Here was my technique: first, you need to makehot keys (F-keys) for bleedshot, your pistol, and your vibro-knuckler. I highly recommend using a VK since it does increase your damage even though you aren't certified to use it (and paying 5-10K for a goodslicedVKis a worthwhile investment). So, find a willing mob (female kaadu's and krevols were my favorites), and equip your pistol but don't attack. Hit the hot key for bleedshot twice, wait about a second, then hit the hotkey to equip your knuckler. Then melee the target to death, mano-a-mano.
The trick here is that bleedshot will pull the target to you, but does not count for pistol xp, and still does damage over time. And the reason I hit it twice is to make sure it works. If you get into a rythm, you can make sure the bleed symbol shows up before you switch to your VK, but in the beginning, just pause a second and swich no matter what, as your target will be seeking you out shortly. 75% of the time, your bleedshot will hit on the first try. If it doesn't, then wait for the second shot to go off. The real key here is to not let your pistol fire normally, which will steal your unarmed xp and give you some pistol xp instead.
The way the xp works is that the damage done to the creature is divided by the amount of damage you did with each type of weapon, and the bleedshot does not count. So, with the technique above, you do zero pistol damage since bleedshot does not count, and all damage done to target goes to unarmed xp. Similarly, if you just bleedshot, hit them once with your VK, then run away and let the target bleed to death, or stay and get incapped, you will still get all the damage as unarmed xp. Either technique works fine. Bleedshot 2 helps the bleeding process take less time, and usually bleedshot 1 will not kill the target all by itself (it doesn't last long enough). So, I found you had to do a fair amount of melee damage to kill the targets in most cases, which means damage to yourself as well.
I personally chose not to go after the red targets because too often the bleedshot did not kill them. Also, getting incapped takes a lot of time and if you have no way to heal other than waiting, its not a very efficient method. Also, I think killing capper spineflaps and other low level creatures that hang around outside of cities is a good way to get xp mostly because its slow and steady and you rarely need to rest. If you go after high level creatures, you have to factor in your time to find them, and often you spend more time running around looking for stuff to fight then you do actually fighting. So, I preferred to just fight the steady spawns outside the cities, which only give you 50-150 xp per kill, but are always there. And, with Cappers and other things that group, you don't have to pull each one, they all come to you and there is no danger really. So, find a group of 4 cappers, hit one, they all come. take them all down, and 428 xp for 4 (107 xp each). Only took about 60 seconds, you are minimally damaged, and move on to the next group. In my opinion, thats much easier than searching for the "perfect" target.
For krevols and kaadu's (females only), take them on one at a time using bleedshot first from a prone position and melee when they lock on to you. Its ok to run around too to keep from being hit too much and let the bleedshot do its thing. Those are 350-500xp each, but you will probably need to rest after one or two.
During rests, its a good time to work on grinding in another profession. So, bring your supply of resources and crafting kits, and grind on weaponsmithing or whatever your are working on. Makes the time productive.
