I am Master Rifles/MBH on my alt. I like the 65m range on rifles and my 83 SAC Laser Rifle...
The 35m range on a Pistol is the main downfall...if you want to stay out and kite in some PvE, that 35m range can be an issue.
Ranged arm ftw.

I have carbines...and the more I play carbines, the more I miss having rifles.

True...but add that ranged arm to rifles....
I dunno. I like my pistols. I've used both rifles and pistols. It depends on what style of fighting you like. With rifles, you are far away and can just shoot at your target a bunch of times before they notice you and start running. With pistols, you just walk up and light them up. Since you are used to more close combat kind of fighting, rifles might seem boring to you. You might like pistols better. So I'd suggest trying both out and go from there.
I'm a Master Pistoleer, but I still use my rifle a lot.
As far as killing things go...I've seen Jedi die from rifle blasts and pistol shots. It all depends on how you manage your attacks.

I am MBH/MC/CM4000 I personally see uses for all of them and use all of them. I would look more at what kind of armor you want to use. Alot of people say "light sabre is energy based, so go with recon", but all of the other force powers are kinetic...so it stands to reason that, in my opinion, battle would be the best, it has equal protection on both.
At the moment, if you were totally against carbines I would say rifle...that is which I use more between pistols and rifles ( a trand rifle...very good if you can afford the cost..or find a MWS who will let you collect the special components).
. Maybe I'm just using a POS pistol or something but my proton carbine with power up does WAY more damage and with MUCH lower SAC.. I've heard great things about rifle (the stealth looks fun) but I have that annoying "Respec me now!!!" popup every time I land to take ona mark and its getting annoying..
