Thread: Could permadeath make a comeback?
No, I dont see Perm-Death comming back...They seem to be knocking Jedi down off there high horse and bringing them down to just above a CL80 Finished temp...
Im not sure how they will deal with the can of worms they opened..Looks like there just trying to make Jedi not worth the effort and Jedi will slowly fall off..I guess
Atleast, till they need Scripts again lol

This seems a real shame to me. Jedi should be strong (at least x1.5) but also rare and hard to get. Not common as muck but little better than any other prof. Also, I don't think this will result in less jedi. Ppl will still have the urge to hold a glowstick, even if they don't get to be uber.
Permadeath of some sort is the only thing I can think of to control the jedi population, and to add any sort of a challenge to becoming a jedi.

They can't make permadeath come back even if they want to.
You now become jedi with you're primary char and are able to own a house(s)
before it was you're secundary and couldn't own anything
If you read my post, I was suggesting that the jedi loses NONE of his kit, houses, creds, etc. All the jedi losses is the ability to be a jedi, or use the force. The character remains in the game with all their kit, but is now only a normal character and can never again become jedi. Couldn't a system like this work?

permadeath wont comeback.
For a start, jedi characters are now the main toons on that account,
Not to mention, to justify something as extreem as perma-death, jedi would have to have the power to go with it. risk vs reward.
Perma-death isn't even the solution to control jedi population. the rate of people unlocking from the village would still exceed the rate of jedi who quit or "die". the key to controling the jedi population is to control the way jedi unlock. with all the AoE groups and double xp, the fs grind is far too easy.

OK, I actually agree with a lot of this, except the part I highlighted. As I stated in my original post, I do not suggest that the toon dies, but that they lose the ability to be a jedi or use the force. They become just another normal toon, and keep all of their kit.
I do agree that jedi should get the 'power to go with it', as you put it. Jedi should be powerful. A full temp jedi should need a grp of several VERY good BHers to have a chance of taking him down, if the jedi knows how to PvP that is. But before jedi can be given this sort of power, they must also be made RARE, or they will continue to unbalance the game and the GCW as they do at the moment.
So I then agree with you again that it should be much harder to unlock jedi in the first place. I mean, as things stand, I have almost unlocked jedi without even trying. I've done village quests for content, or to help a guildie that wanted to do one, and I've turned normal xp into FS xp since becoming CL80, as there is nothing else to do with it. As you point out, anyone that wants to unlock jedi can do so very easily, as long as they are patient in waiting for the village phases to turn.
So, in summary, SOE should make it harder to unlock jedi, should make jedi (full temp) more powerful (at least x1.5, if not more perhaps as part of FRS), but should also implement a system where after a certain number of PvP deaths (or perhaps just BH and Jedi deaths?), the jedi loses the ability to wield the force for ever, and becomes just another normal toon.
This way, players can decide to try the jedi challenge. They can attempt the (new0 difficult unlock. If they manage this, they then have to survive with only a set number of lives. All sounds like fun to me, and although losing the jedi abilities after dying too many times would be a bummer, u'd still have ur toon and all ur kit.
Would this work?

First of all, plz don't just state that u oersonally would like to see this or not, cos I already know that 'most' of us BHers would like it, and 'most' jedi would not, for obvious reasons. The question here is can you honestly see SOE bringing it back, and if they did, how many acounts would cancel?
In terms of concept, perhaps on unlocking jedi, that character should be given a set number (perhaps around 9) of PvP lives, and when they have all been used up, either the character dies for ever, or alternately they lose forever the ability to use the force and become just a regular character? (ie no lose of creds and kit, just ability to be a jedi). You get to keep ur alt on the server, just not as a jedi.
A sytem like this would keep the jedi population under control, force jedi to be a little more careful about vis if they want to survive (so we would see less of them), and to my mind would put the challenge back into becoming a jedi. I might even think aboutgoing on to the trialsmyself (have been FS since the 'glowy' system started, but don't want to be a jedi at the mo)if this was the case, just to see if I could survive long enough to become a knight.
To cut off a few complaints before they are made: Paddys CAN solo, as long as they are prepared to drop non-jedi combat skills to lower their CL to a point where sologrind is feasible, so there is no need to gain vis if you don't want to. Second, to all the jedi who will ask if they will be refunded their subs for the 5 months (or 2 weeks now!!) that they spent grinding jedi - first of all this is a game, u r supposed to enjoy it. If the grind was such a chore, why are you playing this game? second, if you don't want to lose ur jedi character that u 'worked' so hard for, simple - don't get vis!
So, whatta u all think?
Tanks, is there ANY chance of something like this being brought back, or are SOE too scared of losing the jedi subs?
Kal
I agree with most of this post, however, the part I highlighted I only partly agree with. I think that should permadeath be reinstated, that jedi should start out with 9 or so PVP lives, but that it shouldn't be a set number. For example, a jedi who has been careful to avoid unnecessary visibility shouldn't be penalized for a string of bad luck. Such as, he has a run in with a Janta spawn, and that puts him on the terms, then he's attacked by a bh in a player city, with gives him more visibility, which leads to more bh's chasing him, and in the end, despite, for example, a year's worth of cautious, anti-vis playing, he ends up with permadeath, all because of a few little events that lead up to him running out of lives. If permadeath is going to be brought back, there should be some sort of reward system for responsible playing, such as, if a jedi is able to avoid vis or stay off the terms for a certain period of time, he should be given a bonus life, with no cap on how many lives a jedi can save up. We all know the jedi grind can be a b!+(h, and if permadeath is brought back, a lot of jedi will either quit the game or just the general disappearance of the jedi, whether it's by the actual death of the character or if it's just that character's loss of connection with the Force. Then we'll be complaining about not having enough bounty targets on the terminals, the dev's will finally be able to add in other player bounties, then the war between the bh's and the jedi will suddenly be the war between the bh's and the smugglers, or whatever other profession can be a bounty target.
When that happens, the smugglers, who from what I've read and seen, have been on our side all along, will no longer support us, with us asking for their skills to be nerfed, when the only attention they've ever gotten is nerf's. They don't need that anymore than we need to lose their support.
Let's face it, people, permadeath is not a good thing. If it is brought back, we will lose not just jedi, but an enormous percentage of the players in Galaxies. SOE cannot afford that kind of loss from the player base. That could spell the end of Galaxies for all of us. We need jedi, just as much as SOE needs the players at the keyboard controlling those jedi. Maybe I think too much in worst case scenario terms, but that's a habit from real life that I've developed over the years from my RL job.
I have a better idea.
How about after 10 pvp deaths said player gets knocked back to just end of village stuff. You die you GRIND. I dont agree with permanently banning the char from force usage. That player should just have to finish the last phase of FS or something. This would remove alot of jedi from server and keep things rotating. If you are a pvp god you wont die.... but if you piss enough ppl off those same 5 bh will come after you again and again until you get knocked down to paddy status again.
This probably wont happen. We'll just see jedi becoming 1.0001 better than other chars and they will be as common as swordsmen were precu.
