I think you hit it right on the head there. That's one reason you probably will never see a hard-coded prohibition on same-faction cannibalism. Story-wise it would protect one side (rebs)and not the other (gimps....er...imps). Game-wise that would be a mistake. So, SOE just opened it up for the individual to decide for themselves.

Just have fun dude, it's a video game not a job. Hunt who ya want unless you don't same faction hunt, and if you pvp a lot you don't wanna hunt the people who are gonna eventually help you in the war, but thats up to you. If you wanna bug noob Jedi then that's you, if you wanna hunt big game and make some good cash, up to you. Just remember it's just a game, not a job. And you'll die quite a few times, but it's all in fun.
