The Republic is the Empire in the sense that the Republic became the Empire.
Power was stripped away from the Republic in Episode III when Palpatine announced the formation of the Galactic Empire.
The Alliance to Restore the Republic formed as a way to remove Palpatine from his dictatorial posistion and restore democracy to the Empire, restorring it to the Republic.
The Republic officially died in Episode IV when the Emperor dissolved the Senate.

In retort to the original post, I personally don't call Jedi enemies of the Republic. They were enemies of the Republic, and now they're enemies of the Empire. As it is my belief that the Clone Troopers and most of the old Republic's military evolved into the Empire's Military (it's blatantly obvious) I continue to carry out the Emperor's Order 66 and hunt down the remnant of the Jedi order.

This game doesn't followa timeline so... you can pretty much say its either. I mean there is still a jedi council or was before FRS was taken out, and that was destroyed when the Republic was sacked. So why is it still in existance? Why are there even jedi in the game when the only ones that were left were Ben Kenobi, Yoda, and Luke.......
