One way I've found to minimise or avoid damage to your droid is to get to a spot about 70m away from the mark with a clear line of sight, call the droid and tell it to stay. Now keeping the same distance, circle around the mark so you're at a fairly wide angle away from the droid (ideally 180 degrees). Type /yell attack (or whatever you use for the droid) into your spacial chat then attack, then press enter. Your making the first attack means the mark focuses on you before the droid, and the difference in angles (the droid being behind the mark) means that area attacks from the mark won't hit your droid.

After that it's the usual attacks, duellist stance and heals.

NPCs shoot through terrain... they don't have LOS restricitions.

You might want to try this theory out for yourself, I know that i certainly don't get hit or take damage from NPC's when i have blocking terrain between me and them. I use this too let my action regen whilst bacta shotting myself up to full health all the time.
