ok about feign death again.......
I have to have something targeted to use it?
Does it take a certain amount of time to take effect or is it automatic?

The biggest issue with Feign Death is the fact there is NO way around it. Using it isn't an exploit, but its sorta low class IMHO.
If there was a way around FD, BHs won't complain about it.
NonBH/NonJedi person speaking here.

Yes, it works as advertised, with some caveats. It does have a delay, maybe 2-3 seconds before taking effect, plus it does not always stick, depends on your Feign Death mod, which goes up in the dirty fighting line of Smuggler. You don't need to have anything targeted, but do need to already be in combat to use it. Your best bet is to run, while spamming feign death if you plan to use it, just in case.
Personally, I use it in PvE all the time. Let's me go afk to the bathroom worry free, and lets my force re-gen a little while grinding. I have not used it except strategically in PvP. Most BH's will be very pissed, and make it a point to target you again and/or grief you after this tactic. Personally, making BH's pissed at me is not worth the XP loss at my low level, and by the time it is worth it I likely won't have the skill points to keep it. Additionally, if they land fire or disease on you, you wll be in trouble as you will just slowlyloose your HAMwhile FD'd.
I have used it against a BH strategically, meaning I was being chased by him, aggro'd a Janta spawn intentionally, then feigned death. The BH rolled up on me got aggro'd by the Jantas himself, and subsequently ran. I stood up and ran the other way, lived to fight another day. Later the same BH found me and DB'd me, I didn't use FD this time. Personally, I don't feel good about using it in PvP, seems a llittle unfair, but to each his own.
All that being said, I think it's a skill worth having for any beginning Padawan, as long as it isn't too much hassle to pick up with you template. I was TKA/Pistoleer pre-jedi so it was a no-brainer.

Feign is not an automatic bh survival tool ! There are many situation in which a person may not feign in time for example I have got the "you have failed to feign death" message a few times, Combat que is not clear and you wont feign until you do so , Dizzy/KD will leave you flopping on the floor and hinder your feign ability. I always say if a BH crys to you about feign then tell him to pick a higher paying mission so they wont have the skill points for feign anymore. All in all the skill is very useful for new padawan but I wouldnt go so far as to use it at the first sight of a player even if it is a BH with your mission ..My advice is to get that helmet and chest plate on equip that VK or stun baton and surprise the heck out of that BH with some wicked mind shots while you consume the foods of your choice.

Well not pointless. You can't be incapped (or DBed since you are not incapped) when FD'ed. And you keep healing up naturally.
But yes, you can be "black barred" and as you can guess that's not so good to whatever armor you are wearing.

break it, right now, don't think so.
A few things prevent it. Can't FD while dizzied, for example.
