Thread: Schematics. Your views

I had a very unsettling exchange from a person whom my guild considered their primary Bio Engineer. (Rrrando for those fishing for a name) I've made purchases from him before, and he frequently says to "email him if I needed anything" Well, I needed to make a large amount of intelligent and broad spec nutrients, so I leave him an email asking that he make a couple schematics and he'll be paid handsomely for his time. He replies then "sorry I don't make schematics for people". Obviously at that point I took this person out of mind for any of my future purchases.

I usually get schematics made for myself as every bio engineer store I go to (on starsider) never has more than 3 or 4 crates of tissues with identical serial numbers, this of course makes large food runs an impossibility, and also the bio engineers I speak with are simply unwilling to do tissues runs of 1000, it quite frankly ties up a lotof factory time (think it took about 2 days for my factory to make 1000 intelligents)

I did however find a bio engineer willing to do it, and I paid him and also gave him free burnout sauce (he was working unarmed) and he loved it and asked to buy more, I figure this was a win win situation <shrugs> So my question is, what are your views on creating schematics for customers?

Personally, I've never been asked in the game to make a schematic for someone, but if I was asked, I wouldn't do it - unless it was for a guild mate or a friend. I think it take profits away from BE's.Granted, making a schematic for someone would save factory time, but would really cut into a BE's profits as well. The way I look at it is, it's kind-of like a person going up to McDonalds and asking for the "secret sauce" for Big Macs, then that person goes home and makes their own Big Macs, since they already have the ingredients to make the finished product :meat, buns, pickles, etc...Why would McDonalds cut themselves out of making money and give you the recipe for the "secret sauce"? Since everyone knows that a Big Mac without the sauce isn't a true Big Mac. It doesn't make business sense for McDonalds to do it does it? I know this is an absurd example, but you get my point. I hope other BE's take a stand and don't make schematics, but obviously since you found one that will make it for you, I'm sure you'll find other stupid BE's out there.

I have been asked, and to my surprise, the chef wasn't offended when I refused. If a person has an order for 1000 tissues, I ask them to place it and I will get it to them asap (my guild can get me enough meat in a few hours, the factory time is the factor, and the chef would have to wait anyway). The offer was 100k, and 40 crates would net me approximately 2 million dollars. Granted, I would not have to supply the meat, but at 10cpu that's only 200k in meat, meaning an end net of 1.8 million, meaning I would have lost 1.7 million.

I had the exact thing happen to me the other day and I usually despise making schematics for people, since it does cut into your potential profit. However for this particular guy who was pleasant and understanding, I offered to trade schematics with him. I would create one broad spectrum for one vasarian brandy/medium additive combo. Why two for one? Because we all know that the schematic I give him can be used for a lot of his dishes therefore giving him more flexibility. I on the other hand would only use the brandy for self use.

I think we both walked away satisfied. Little does he know, I plan to do a 1 to 1 trade from now on since he was so pleasant and nice. Not pushy at all especially in the beginning of our conversation when I seemed a little hesitant to sell him the schematic.

Darksithmage,

Good for Rrrando! He's my new hero

I don't make schematics for customers either, even close friends, as I feel that it is extremely detrimental to BE's to do so. May as well give up BE if you can't sell products, and are reduced to selling schematics, that's my opinion. My vendor is very well stocked, yet for every chef that approaches meto buybio additives, there are 5 that approach me for a free schematic and when I turn them down, as nicely as I can, and tell them that I sell additives and have them on my vendor, most of them react angrily, and immaturely.

One of these days I'm going to spend an evening going from chef to chef, telling them that I need crates of the very food/drink that they sell on their vendors, and have tons of money, but that I'd rather not pay for it since I can get it for free, so could they please (or is that "plz"?) make me a free schematic. I would love to see the reactions that I'd get for that.

Chefs are making a ton of money off of Vasarian, I am surprised they are unwilling to cut us in on the profits. It actually reminds me a lot of the Armorsmith/Tailor relation ship. Many armor smiths just grab Tailor too so they aren't dependendant on other tailors (or use an alt). I have a feeling Bio-E is heading to alt class status.

"I have a feeling Bio-E is heading to alt class status."

This suspicion makes a lot of sense. BEs are one of the few (the only?) professions in the game that doesn't really have a "direct" product. Aside from sub-CL 10 pets (a discussion for a different thread), BEs can't use what they make. If you want to use what you make, then you need CH, Tailor, or Chef. Problem is, if you want to be a really effective CH, then you need to spend your points in another combat class, and if you want to be a really go tailor or chef, you most likely want to have plenty of merchant and base artisan boxes as well. BE, because it sucks up so many points, makes for a compelling ALT character. I've been playing BE as a primary, and it certainly causes a lot of headaches when trying to either enter combat or effectively market my wares.

Well.....

I might suggest that if you are not finding any BE willing to make a full run of a particular addative, then perhaps you are simply not offering them enough for the amount of work involved. I am not going to flame you (in spite of your rather flippant attitude toward BEs on the BE forum), but if you want free (or cheap) schematics whenever you need them, you may want to take up bio-engineer.

I do schematics for 250K a schem, and only for items that I don't tend to produce myself. I also take orders for full runs of Broad Spectums and Intelligent Nanos. The problem is a lot of the Chefs Ihave metdon't want to pay anything for a schem or the 1400 a stack for nutrients, so they go without.

The phrase "But I have the resources already and it doesn't cost you anything to make it for me except 2 minutes of your time. It's just cheaper and easier for me to do it this way" pisses me off. It took me more than 2 minutes to master BE. Of course it is easier and cheaper for you, but how does that help me with my current BE template? So I give it to you for free and now I get what? The nice guy award? Bugged with tells from all of your friends who need free schematics done, NOW, while I am trying to keep a Mutant Rancor from biting my head off?

Ifa chefcan't work the extra 250 creds a stack in for a schem, or the extra 1400 creds a stack for the final product, thenthey probably should focus on the lower end, non-BE foods, because the high end BE stuff should be for the people who can afford it, and for the chefs who realize and network that market.

This rant isn't aimed at anyone in particular, just my piece on the subject.....

darksith.....do yourself a favor....just grind BE and then you wont have to depend on these BE's that either want half your profits or too lazy to keep their vendors stocked with nutrients.....while granted i have dealt with a few of these type of BE's...MOST of the BE's on my server are more than willing to provide me with schematics cheap(25k per).. plus food or any other help they need(last BE i gave a 24k stack of meat for his services),most BE's dont want the hassle of collecting all the resources to keep chefs in supply....but i am now grinding BE to be self sufficent..no longer will i have to depend on anyone except myself and will have total control over the quality and quantity of my food....i also have a alt character that is a meat harvesting machine ..master swordsman with scout and droid......its very simple business idea......cut the middle man out completely! also dont beg or get mad at a BE cuz they wont make schematics for you.. simply never again use them or buy anything from thing... also be sure to ban them from your vendors..its the little things that count

hmm Darksith came here and asked us for our views concerning schematics. he asked an honest question and got a bunch of honest answers. He didn't come here and ask for the schematics and get ripped apart for doing so.

so **edit** is your problem coming to our forums and flaming us for our views and opinions? I thought we had gotten away from the BE/Chef cross forum flaming that happened after the chef revamp. I guess there's always a kid somewhere screaming that if he can't get things the way he wants than its 'unfair'.

Ban away sparky. I buy from people who I respect and who do business with me, soif youwent all cry-baby about not getting a free or 25K schem out of me, I would never have even noticed your vendor ban, because you would have already been on my ignore list. Kudos to you for spending your extra skillpoints to be self-proficient and another $50 + $12 a month to gather your own meat. If you got a few more accounts, you could sit around and dance for yourself in a Cantina you built for yourself while discussing with yourself how to make the most money selling your new foods....to yourself.....
