When I hit master I went out and tamed me a rankor... you know how many times I had to tame it? 34 times... for one pet. You guys saying "you have to do it once, we have to do it 5 times"... i dont agree at all...

Another point I would like to make that I dont know if it is commonly known to BE's

Warning shot rocks.... you can still sample after it attacks... warning shot it, peace out, run the other way. When the pet is over 175-250M distant it will stop fighting you... go back and do it again... that is how I got 34 chances on one pet.

5 successful samples

it sometimes takes 10-30 sample fails to get a success

and yes warning shot rocks, =) I'll have to remember that tonight when sampling pickets to make some CL 10 meat-tanks. Was thinking of getting feign death, but why not just use what I have. hehe

Not to mention, even a success at sampling rarely nets you a Very High Quality DNA Sample, which is, of course, what you want to make things out of.

I think I'll stick with the comparison that it takes a hell of a lot less effort/time to run up to a lair and kidnap a baby than it does to actually take the time and effort to craft a deed that will make a baby that'll be worth taming.

The problem with that logic is a misunderstanding of bio-engineering skills and experience. For creature handlers, there is one kind of experience: creature handler experience. For bio-engineers, there are two: engineering and sampling. Imagine if a creature handler had to actually tame creatures to get creature taming skills in that column. THEN there would be screams of bloody murder. Imagine how much time creature handlers would have to spend out in the wild, tracking down tameable creatures to get the experience needed to advance.

However, that's exactly what bio-engineers have to deal with in our quest to master. In order to advance in DNA sampling, we have to, well, sample DNA. We have one skill column with an exclusive form of experience, sampling. It frequently fails, and if we are looking for high experience, we are out on advanced planets trying to stab highly deadly creatures with a needle.

So yes, sampling and taming are different. Taming in the wild is an optional activity for creature handlers, against weak targets that can usually be killed with a shot or two from a beginner weapon (especially if mom and dad aren't around). Sampling is a mandatory activity that puts bio-engineers in mortal danger on a regular basis.

no to mention, in CH taming it dosen't matter what you tame for xp,dwarf nunababies yeild just as much as rancor babies and you get 100 points for each skill you teach them, so when you have a few bars of ch you'll easily get 600 points off each baby you tame. Where I need to sample some pretty tough stuff to get 600 points from it.

Both are fun though, heh at least to me

Nothing like poking things with needles, and having little ? appear over their head.

And nothing quite like the message "You successfully tame the creature"

I love that message

I am now going to jump in and defend my poor misunderstood fellow CHs.

Training babies was how I made CH. I know sampling is way harder then that. All I gots to worry about is running like a girly man when the baby (and maybe Mom/Dad) agro on me. And if I am fast enough (and lucky enough) Mom/Dad will drop at the wayside and leave me with a baby. But you have to sneak up, stab an adult in the foot (and I believe one of the patches hadthe adultsagro on you no mater if it was a successful sample or not, bet that hurt). You had to grind to get to where you are.

Yes there are CHs who do not understand how other professions work. They look at the BE tree and say "I could do that standing on my head while sucking my big toe". But there are those CHs who either have/had friends in game who were/are BEs or they come in here (on the QD) and read how much misery you all are going thru.

All I ask is that you do not paint with such a wide brush when you condem ALL CHs. Some of us do understand what you have gone thru and what you might still have to go through to have a fun profession to play.

Sampling and taming are still about the same deal. It's pretty rare to tame a dangerous creature without many tries, and a few aggros in the middle of a dangerous spawn. Waiting through each tame attempt to see if you get it, or if you fail, or if you both fail and the attempt draws aggro both. Or if mom sees through your maskscent while your taming.

But as long as it's not a cat speed creature, burst running until they stop chasing, waiting until you can burst run again before retrying makes both 100% safe usually if you have decent armor on and /or PS generator.

As for engineering, that's a differant issue.

Were comparing taming and sampling. The only real differance is that taming doesn't use mind, and can be tried 40-50 times in a row without waiting for your mind to build back up. This also means CH can tame with armor on, while sampling gets hurt by armor due to slow mind repair.

I've now sampled the same dangerous things I tame, I see little differance really.

Sorry but you cannot sample something in combat.

So the warning shot does not work.

Sorry, but its the truth.

Also you might notice, that you no loger get a sample if you are incaped or feigning death, nor can you tame those things.

As for why you failed to Tame a Rancor so many times...go figure took me 20 times on a Graping Spider Hunter, Rancor took me only 4 times.

But anywise, Sampling is much worse in the fact it makes things get upset alot more then taming.

So not only does a sampler have to contend with the usual tame problems of other things beating on you, but also with failures, and making things upset.

So in this case, I happen to disagree being both a Master Bio-Engineer and Master Creature handler.
I believe sampling is alot harder, especially since to sample a Rancor you have to have sampling 4 or be a master, and even then you fail alot.

The new sampling methods where any kind of movement causes the dna quality to drop means that dna sampling has is very much like taming since you have alot less chance of getting a very high quality sample which is really what you need to make the best clones.

leothric wrote:here is a credit buy a clue. taming a baby is nothing like sampling an adult. Tame any mutant rancors lately? You know how many attempts to sample it takes to get one mutant rancor?

You know how many times mask will break before you get even close enough to try?

You know that to get 5 samples from one could take hours and a few deaths?

No? i didn't think so, go back to the CH board where at least you can think your right when you don't know for sure.

Taming a graul mauler took me hours, but only because I did it right after the vacant planet bug.

Leothric is right. Taming is a cinch compared to DNA sampling. How many babies do you need to find before you tame a baby (without killing it or being DB'd)? Rarely more than 2 or 3. How many ancient grauls did I have to sample before making one good kimogila? I sampled (or tried to sample) 7 to get 10 DNA samples. Two-thirds of my creations come out underpowered enough they're worthless. So, the number is somewher above 7.

Is DNA sampling hard? Yes. Do I like it that way? Yes

I used to tame babies from the wild, but I found it boring, and not much of a challenge. Once you get one, so what? Its stats will be comparable to every other creature of that type.

BE used to be that way. Rancors ranged from 10k HAM to 13k HAM. Now, the variation is enormous. After hours and hours of sampling/crafting, I have just one ultimate prized posession. Do I keep it, or sell it for an enormous profit? That's the kind of excitement I expected from this game.

The original poster should be ashamed of his whining attitude. One minute, the CHs think they are better than us, the next they claim that taming sucks more than cloning. One minute, they hate the patch, because taming was the most exciting thing they do, the next, they're complaining about how much they die when taming. Get out, and play the game.

I have been both a BE and a CH, and I have to agree that sampling is harder overall than taming, but to the guy that says it would be comparable if CHs had to get one column of their skills just from taming --- you leave out the fact that BEs can sample pretty much any animal, where CHs can only tame babies. In theory you could get your whole sampling column running around newbie area. You don't find any babies at all spawning there.
