When you use a ranged weapon you get two kinds of experience: (1) weapon experience, and (2) combat experience. In marksman there are the weapon lines (rifle, carbine, pistol) which go off those weapons. The proportion of damage you do with one of those weapons of the total pool kill determines how much of that weapons experience you get. So say you pull with a rifle then finish with TKA, if you got mind hits on the rifle and killed it in body with TKA, I think you get all unarmed weapon experience.
Combat experience is 10% of the total experience value from any combat. It goes up slowly. The ranged weapon support line of marksmen uses this kind of experience, and you can not apply pistol experience to this.

I'm using two different ranged weapons I have certifications in and using ranged attacks however i am getting no ranged weapon experience! What am i doing wrong here do i need to find a different weapon or what? please advise
I don't see how that could be, unless you're not killing anything. You get weps xp only after your target drops dead. If you die or break off the attack before the target dies, you get no experience. The XP you gain shows up immediately in your combat chat box and you can also track in in your skill window, in the numerical stat box showing your various xp accumulations and in the thermometer boxes (in this case in the marksman tree) showing how far you have to go to reach the next level.
If you are working on the starting marksmand profession you get 4 types of xp
1) pistol; get this with pistols
2) rifle; get this with rifles
3) carbine; get this with carbines
4) combat; this is 10% of the weapon xp you receive from killing an NPC or creaure.
okay well i don't have a problem building up carbine rifle or pistol. I used a rifle and normally finish off with the carbine. or just use the rifle. however i am not getting any ranged weapon support xp or whatever... I don't know why i am using the same i have up to advanced it just has stopped increasing. about halfway through advanced. i'm just killing **edit** and working on building up rebel faction points now but I am curious as to why i am not getting any ranged weap supt experience when i'm using ranged weapons and ranged attacks. as to defeat the npc.
Aight gentlemen/women,
I seriously need some help over here since I feel like a complete noob (well, I am actually but that's besides the point).
I've been playing this game for about 2 months now and I have finally achieve all 4 blocks on the marksman table, (now I just need apprenticeship xp to get master). Anyways, have been using the Laser weaps for both carbine and riffle, FWG5 for a pistol. Everyone in a while, I'll do a headshot 2 (with riffle) and get over 1k in damage, none of my other specials work that well, I think.
Now here's the question:
WHAT IN THE WORLD MUST I DO TO INSTILL LOTS OF DAMAGE TO MY OPPONENTS?!?!
For real, this is getting rather frustrating. I have almost Master Marksman and yet I feel like I'm doing a lil better than when I was a Novice, and being that I do not know how to use those skills effectively, that MAKES me a Novice.
Please, someone, send me some advice.
Thanks
Garry Owen
Gorath: Marksman 4/4/4/4, Scout 2/1/4/4
Easy Answer: Get an Elite Class. Marksman skills are useful, but they don't overlap very well in most cases. (Witness pistol tree skills not working with carbines or rifles, and vice versa.)
Long Answer: Tactics, always tactics. This may get long and will probably experience topic drift, so bear with me.
- Use the special targetting abilities you've been given for whichever weapon you're using. Focus on one bar, instead of randomly attacking them all. This is KEY against foes of any significant difficulty. Since you're a Master Marksman, or close enough, you should know that your primary advantage is in flexibility, not in overwhelming power. You can use all three classes of ranged weapons - a carbine specialist (or carbineer) can only use carbines. Ditto for Riflemen and pistoleers. The tradeoff is that a pistoleer can use a pistol better than you can, even though they couldn't hit a barn with a rifle. You're a generalist, and they have specialized. You have an edge in all situations, they have an edge in one.
- I'd recommend opening up atmoderately longrange with a carbine or rifle, and then switching to a pistol as your foe closes the distance. Start prone against an unaware foe at about 45-64m, anduse the Legshot 2 and Action Shot 1with a suitable carbine. I'd recommendthe Laser Carbine you're using, but mind the minimum damage, and the HAM costs! It's not hard to dish out a couple thousand points of damage before your opponent even knows you're there and charges. Switch off to a pistol when your foe gets close, and just use unstyled shots to try and hit the legs randomly. Alternately, reverse the weapons - use random fire from a carbine or rifle at long range and then use body shot and health shot after the switch to take out a critter. (The latter may work better - I can't say for sure, as I'm a specialist.)
- If you're not interested in switching weapons, try taking an elite class in the weapon type you prefer - that way your flexibility (which youaren't using if you're not switching up as appropriate) won't be wasted.
- I don't know how noobie you are, so I'm forced to ask: You're not remaining prone or kneeling against a charging foe, are you? You take additional damage doing that. Stand up and run away while shooting. This is kiting. You'll use it often, and it plays into #5 and #6 below... You'd better be using it in PvP, or the first brawler you fight will eat you for lunch, and move on to someone else for dessert.
- Warning Shot. Then hit PEACE. Your target will run for a long time - don't let them get out of range. Warning Shot is your new best friend. Use it. Love it. When the target is a long way off, hit it and it'll come running back to get revenge. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. This is fear kiting. Mix with kiting as needed for your situation.
- Bleeds. Bleeds are your SECOND best friends. This is Mind/Action/Health Shot 1, depending on your weapon. When you apply a bleed, your target will take damage every few seconds (no initial damage, only after the first "tick" is damage taken) for as long as the "bleed" effect lasts. A bleed is signified by a "blood drip" icon in the state monitor of your target. While bleeding, a target may be scared off with Warning Shot, and continues to bleed. Mix with both regular and fear kiting liberally. Bleeds are what allows you to take on BIG creatures, because while a bleed may only do 200-300 per tick, it may last for 10-12 ticks. (That's 2000-3600 damage, and you only had to hit a target once. The tick numbers are fictitious - I'm not positive on bleed durations.)
- Against creatures (PvE combat) use traps. At Trapping III you'll get the AWESOME Phenacine Dart. This is a snare effect. It makes the critter affected run more slowly - MUCH more slowly than you do. You can use this to get some breathing room or make an escape when things go poorly. Work on that trapping you have at level 1, and you'll like it. Glow juice can make your attacks more damaging (accurate?) as well. Use it as well, and you'll magnify your own effectiveness. Traps make a creature aware of you immediately, so don't use them until the critter knows where you are. Traps cannot be used against players or pets.
- Group. Grouping is both fun and profitable. You'll make friends, maybe find a PA, and more importantly, you'll get to work with other players, all of which will have their own strategies to impart. It's crucial for some of the more dangerous planets, as well, since most of the BIG game in SWG has well in excess of 10k HAM, will attack you in groups and can inflict enough damage to slay you outright.
Hope that helps.
Thanks ya'll. Any more advices will be welcomed. There is a lot I still need to learn and need only someone willing to teach.
You've been very helpfull.
