Thread: thinking about retiring my **edit** creator in favor of droid eng revamp aka combat droids*
am soo tired of being a **edit** creator , thinking about going droid eng becuase of this quote from dev
"New Combat Droid Models " ( can we say droidikas)
I think the whole pet scene in SWG is gonna shrink once they get driods sorted.
Too many people complained about "pet wars" and "poke mon" ("I choose you Rancor!"...er...hmm, I don't think so) so the devs will act and oil the squeaky wheel. I believe we've seen the first stages of this with the creature "rebalance" and DE's will now be able to target the lucrative non-CH market. It'll be interesting to see how, or even if, the devs handle every man and his dog running around with a combat droid (to me thats just as bad as everyone running around with a Gurreck).
Creatures will still be around as there were always a lot of animals in SW movies and they need to keep them to keep that "feel".
I'm not sure if Droidekas will be in there, those are typically a very heavy weapon kind of droid. Possibility a rebel factional perk since it is outdated technology and the rebels like to scavenge for every advantage they can take. IG assassin droids I'd bet, maybe the battledroids since they are reasonably frail. I think the initial wave of features are just going to add new abilities for the existing droids though rather than add new types of bodies. The prospect of the droids is interesting, but then i remember it's just as limited as any other crafting profession in terms of what you can produce so it'd get old very fast. Frankly being a BE means that every time there is a new mob or species added it's increasing the possible variations in our clones.
TAL's quote: I'm not sure if Droidekas will be in there
but they can do what they did to bio eng this new change.....
step 1 choose battle droid model
step 2 add compents

toad's quote; Yeah Tal-N i agree but your missing something. I might be wrong, but its sounding more and more that they are also gonna be able to *use* the combat droids they make too and im not talking about a 900 ham probot. Being able to make and use a high level combat droid with medium/heavy armor is kinda tempting as this class requires most of the CH tree to use half the stuff we make. If this is true, thats a advantage I cant pass up. BE will be a waste of skill points.

It will never happen.
The whole point behind the December creature rebalance and lowering of the CL for non-CH pets is that they don't want pets to tank for players. Yes, I know that players can only tank when they are max buffed and then only certain professions, but that doesn't change the fact that eliminating pet tanks has been a long time and often stated goal of the design/development team.
You-know-where will freeze over before they allow "combat droids with medium/heavy armor" into the game. Do you remember probots? How about AT-ST's? People are getting all excited about the upcoming DE changes, but they are just setting themselves up for the fall.

Droid Engineering is a crafting profession, just like Bio Engineering. We may be able to make pets, but we can't use them without Creature Handling skills. I don't think they'll ever allow Droid Engineers to use droids that other players can't.
Interesting that you bring this up, Teemo. In fact, in the initial discussions about DE changes, the Devs actually wanted to make DEs a Creature Handler equivalent ala a Droid Combat Class. That is, until the DEs informed them <coughs> that they were in fact a crafting class and wanted to make useful combat droids for other classes......makes you kind of wonder about what goes through the Devs minds at times........

For better or worse, I suspect that in the long run, you are correct. What remains to be seen is how the coming combat changes will affect the ability of players to enjoy some level of solo content. 2/3 of the player base responded in a poll that their preferred playstyle is solo PvE. If they persist in this vision and continue to nerf any ability of folks to solo even intermediate-level content with the grouping system fubared the way it is, my bet is the clicks on cancellations will be deafening. This would be the one thing that would definitely push me out of the game and onto greener pastures.

They won't let people have medium armor droids, trust me on that. Light armor maybe, but the medium armor on the Probot is not going to be staying for your typical professions. They did speak about adding some kind of droid certifications similar to what the CHs have so that DEs could craft more powerful ranges of droids. That was a long time ago though when they also allowed people to called 3 Rancor at once so given how they are having a general nerfing of pets for the past 6 months I think that idea is out.
I don't think they've changed their 'path' for adding DE only combat droids. But if you think they'll have those anytime soon, don't give up your BE and go DE, you'll be waiting awhile... a few months at least, they have the combat system to revamp (test on TC were promosing but didn't get enough testing).

I think it's likely a lot of people will do this as well. I will seriously consider it myself, but will wait and see what they do to DE first. I enjoy BE, and have for some months, but feel our future in the game is shaky at best, and with the monster crafting situation being so volatile right now I'm feeling kind of unmotivated to make more monsters. The ones I make today could very well be invalidated tomorrow so what's the point?

I generally try to keep a positive outlook, but let's not kid ourselves. Look what happened to BE when it received a major reworking. They borked it.
Do you really think you're going to become a DE and everything will be coming up roses after the DE revamp?
To me it's not a question of bugs at all. It's a question of the game's direction. What are going to be the combat pets of the future, and who are going to be the suppliers of these pets? That is the 1 million credit question right there. And SOE has shown very little regard for preserving game balance with these types of changes in the past. Droids used to be THE battle pet of choice. When they nerfed droids as battle pets, they nerfed them hard, and left them crippled for months. When they released mounts the completely invalidated scout terrain navigation. Didn't matter, mounts were cool and everyone wanted one. Then vehicles, completely invalidating mounts, hurting CH and BE. Didn't matter, vehicles were cool and everyone wanted one. Now we will have battle droids.... think they are going to bother to preserve the balance between pets and droids? If they did this, it would be a first.
