Thread: Mounts, first impressions
In case you haven't seen it, they're now offering free mounts on test center. Don't worry, they only last a week and are only for testing purposes. Don't have the link on hand but it shouldn't be hard to find. There's a Jawa in the starting cities on Tatooine, Corellia, and Naboo who hands them out.
Anyway, the brackaset is extremely slow. Don't know of anyone who would want to own one.
The dewback goes faster, barely, than a player's normal run speed. I tried hunting a lesser womp rat but kept getting a Cannot See Your Target thing. Took me about three minutes of running around in circles to finally knock it down. Oh yeah, and the mount slows down, on purpose, when you enter combat. Finally the thing was dead and I had a very hard time targeting the corpse for harvesting. I finally dismounted.
Fed up with that I took out the brack again, and found myself sitting literally in the clouds. No city, no mount, in sight, just me sitting with my legs spread in mid air. I was able to steer the mount with my arrow keys and watched the target where my mount should have been wander around. Then it said that I had gotten out of range from myself and could no longer access my inventory. I used /dismount and the world came back. So I got back up on the beast, and that is where we leave our heroine, stuck and unable to move. /unstick didn't do anything.
Cool! Sounds like they are ready to release these on to the production server.
I do like the game but one gets jaded over time dealing with everything not working.
Ok, so I used /quit since that was the only thing that worked. Logged back in.
Got up on the dewy and ran for the hills. Didn't seem to do badly with terrain. Got attacked by evil settlers. So I ran in circles around the one I was shooting at while keeping the dewy targeted. Took forever to kill one evil settler, can't see my target again. Good news is that though we've been told that the mount can be targeted, none of the settlers did. The dewy ran around without a scratch and I had very few scratches. So I got bored with the settlers and ran off again. They seemed to run at the same speed I did, not burst, just normal dewy speed until I got out of their range.
So I kept going and ran past a group of bocatts, no, you cannot mask scent while riding. One of the bocatts must have used a posture down because it knocked me off the mount and into a kneeling position. I left the dewy there and burst ran for it and got lucky.
Back in town I destroyed the brack and got a kaadu. Apparently you can have as many mounts as you have spaces to hold them. So you can try all of them if you want to. The kaadu seems to go the same speed as the dewy. Oh, and all these mounts are variations that I've never seen before, probably the wild nonCH versions I'd heard about.
I took a few explorer recon missions and rode out on the kaadu. Once again, not bad on terrain. But that ended rather quickly when I ran past a few Tuskan Raiders. "Your mount slows down in preparation for combat." Or some such silly thing. No, you can't hit burstrun while mounted. I got knocked out for 230 seconds, or would have been if the Raider hadn't slain me. They didn't seem to bother with the mount. The vitality was still at 100 when I checked it at the cloning center. Oh, and now everything I had that wasn't a resource took a 5% hit. Clothing, crafting tools, that kind of thing. My weapon didn't appear on that list which was surprising. So I stood outside the cloning center and alt-tabbed back over here. While writing this my game client crashed.
OMG! So lets see if I have this straight, mounts are:
1) slow
2) buggy
3) difficult to fight from
4) can't mask scent
Oh yea, I want one! lol
Did you try the gallop speed for the mounts? What are the penalties of that? How do the various mounts gallop?
It is really sad the mount does not get targeted, since nobody will want to buy the higher HAM mounts and will just be happy with kaadus and spats.
Ok, traded in the kaadu for a falumpaset. It seemed to go the same speed as the others so I think the brack's current speed is a bug. Many people have reported it on the test center board.
I completed one of the two explore missions, the second just said "mission incomplete" for some unknown reason. So I got a good long ride. If you want to mask scent you /dismount mask your scent and then /mount again. I had to do this several times on my trip, whenever mask scent broke. The falumpaset gives a smoother ride than the others, not so bouncy. It's funny to watch it run sideways along the side of a cliff. I kept the /gallop command qued just in case I ran into any more Tuskans, but luckily I didn't. Some Alkaharas noticed me but I kept riding and managed to outpace them.
After the mission I decided to check on my flora harvester. I never made it over there. The place was swarming with hostile creatures and evil hermits. (Probably because of the population boom in Mos Entha from everyone else wanting a mount. I'd never seen the country look so crowded.)I used the gallop command there and while the mount as already slowed from combat I didn't notice any difference in speed. So don't trust gallop to save you. I put it in a second time and it said I was already galloping, yeah right.
Also you can force the mount to walk using the shift key.
Also, my husband tested out his mount in an imperial PvE field. Apparently the mount was getting attacked by the turrets, just not taking any damage at all. He soloed the field while standing behind his invincible kaadu. I don't know if this is how all the mounts are or if they only did it to the freebies. But I guess that's why I assumed that my mounts weren't being attacked.
Hmm. So I can run across terrain (slightly) faster but if I run into enemies I go slower (no burstrun apparently when "slowing for combat") ...? Well I guess that's all good for exploring unless you're on a heavily crowded planet, going too fast (which doesn't seem to be a problem <g>
that you hit red dot aggro area before you turn, your Mask Scent doesn't end in the middle of them with no chance to redo it until you dismount or you have stuff spawn from underneath you from lag.
So I guess I might use a mount on some planets where aggro spawn are rare. That leaves out Tatooine where my Player City will be, since Kreetles will slow me down.
BTW, you only slow down if you're already galloping. It drops you back to default creature run speed. You can't go slower than that and you don't get the "your mount slows down" message unless you're already galloping.
