Thread: Mounts, first impressions
wow.how dissapointing. i was hoping that mounts would allow usto run from combat quicker, not slow us down.
hopefully they will allow the rider to change the speed manually instead of the way it is now. it seems like it would be extremely annoying.
great work yosho. thanks for the info.
Without any disrespect meant toward Yosho or anyone else that has actually used the monts on test, this thread does highlight the biggest flaw with the drive to attract people to TC that don't really have the mindset to do 'testing', as opposed to trying out a cool new feature early.
The whole point of mounts being available on TC for free is so they can be tested. If you want to try them out early, fine, but don't then come to normal profession boards with poor, inaccurate information implying that the current state of mounts is exactly what will be going live. If you want to actually test them, go to TC with that attitude. Set up some waypoints and do timed runs. Check to see what new commands you have been given (i.e. /gallup and /dismount). Try using mounts in different situations (water, bridges, combat, long distance travel). Do some REAL testing. Then use /bug and or the TC forum to help develop things to a working state for publishing.
Going to TC, trying out a new feature for a few minutes with no structure, then posting here that it doesn't work is counter-productive to both the game and the profession. Mounts are going to be a short-lived boon for BE as it is, with vehicles coming in soon behind them, we don't need to be running them down based on code and variables that aren't even live yet.
Oh, FWIW, mount speeds are under revue constantly, and there are a couple of huge threads about mount bugs in general and mount use in combat specifically that are well worth reading through before predicting doom and gloom.
Sooty,
I agree with you in principle. A lot of the info is anecdotal and some is pure speculation. But, I would never ask anyone to not publicize what they see. Not everyone has the time to beta test a game we're all paying for. I appreciate the information and even comment on some of it. Obviously we won't know until it goes live but these observations are still clear indications of what we may potentially be seeing shortly.
I did use \bug once, it wouldn't let me do it again. So I also went to the test center board and posted what I found in the appropriate thread over there. I never said that all these bugs were going live. I certainly hope that they're not. And since it seems that even though all this same data has already been reported before I ever got to TC the only way to get the devs attention is to make more noise about it. If the devs wanted me to make a structured test they could have given me an outline and I would have followed it, though there are things they wouldn't have thought of asking that a hundred or so random testers might come across.
And if you've been paying attention you'd know that mounts are not a boon to the BE's without our cloning fixes.
Why check run speeds? I've already seen multiple posts on the subject. Same with the swimming bugs, the destroying your mount while you're sitting on it, and the incredible shrinking wookiees. The devs must have wanted me there for a reason. Oh, and in fact I did find a bug that I hadn't seen reported before. Though that concerned someone else's mount that appeared on a completely different planet from where the owner was. I did /bug it and I also posted it in TH's bug forum.
I encourage everyone who has not yet tried out the mounts to get over there before Nov. 12. Make a new character if you need to, the mounts are free to try.
Given the history of SWG patches, this is actually very important information to be giving out in the non TC forums. They have announced they'd like to put this patch live next week. They've put the last 3 major updates on live before they were ready, full of bugs (and not from a lack of testers reporting), and it's obvious they feel pressure from somwhere to release things before they are working correctly.
This kind of post makes more people aware of the incoming problems, makes people more likely to test out mounts on their own and report the same findings. It also makes it clear to the community who to blame (not the TC folks) when known bugs make it to live servers. And maybe, just maybe, they'll feel slightly less pressure to release a 'not ready for production' product.
I fully expect to be flying in the clouds on my first day on a mount on live. ![]()
