The problem I have with using /follow (I used to use that too) is that it gets you too close to the creature. It's like, what, 5m or less?The trouble with that is you often get:

you failed to get a dna sample

you've been hit for 600 damage

you've been diseased

you've been slain

Then you wake up with a headache in the clone center before you even even hear the combat music. I find that hanging back near the full 15m give you plenty of time to react when the creature aggros. And the other thing is that the last thing you want is to be "following" the creature after it aggros you. owch!

You kill me. HEHEHE. My toon will follow and stop at about 10m. But with synthsteak, the full hit will be mitigated. MR's don't hit that hard either. Last night, I was being tagged for about 350 damage before mitigation.

thats why he said to peace cause it reduces your chance of being slain and aggro'd by the other MR's

Many poeple who have BE's in the game usually pair the profession with either tailor, merchant, chef, or ranger. These people lack the required skill points to have a levelled combat profession to help defend themselves while out sampling dangerous creatures. A very common creature is the Mutant Rancor. The intent here is to provide a personal technique to sampling these nasties without doc buffs, kinetic resistent armor, or combat professions.

Items to bring:

stim b's
synthsteak
vasarian brandy
+25 mask scent clothing (as scientific looking as possible, hehe)
jawa beer (liquor before beer, in the clear)
travel bisquits

I don't know how many of yall are rangers with tracking (like I am), but I usually start my searching around the dath sarlacc. I make waypoints to the places I find them because they tend to spawn on or around those same places. Assuming you've found a herd of mutants, make a sampling macro like mine:

/peace;
/follow;
/sampleDNA;

That way your toon will follow the critter if it strays. The /peace command prevents your toon from autoattacking in the event your target creature attacks you (guarantees a DB if you attack back). This also prevents the rest of the herd from attacking you, provided your mask hasn't snapped. Prior to your sampling attempt, fill up on synthsteak/travel bisquits and down a shot of brandy followed with jawa beer. That way you won't get drunk on an empty stomach. HAHAHAHAHAHA. If/When the MR attacks you, simply run. You've already peaced so the MR will only follow you for about 100m. The synthsteak will prevent a load of damage the MR would be dealing, and you'd only have to pop a stim when your HAM gets low. With the brandy, it may hit your head a few times without fear of mindcap. I usually go through two healings with a stim during this run. When the MR deaggro's, it will walk ever so slowly back to the herd. My experience here is that it'll aggro again if you attempt another sampling. I will usually run passed the critter and try another one in the herd. Keep your eyes open for your food buffs. The jawa beer I made lasts 15 minutes, and it goes by FAST. Yall BE's may have good luck approaching MR's with just master scout and clothing, but the jawa beer mods allows you to reapply mask without a delay. Yall may or may not notice the difference with the travel bisquits, but I took a charge of it while going up a steep ledge and my speed increased noticeably.

Use this technique and all things should be fine.

I find the best time to prod them is when they're walking back to the heard, as they don't smell you coming from behind (ooer). There's also less chance of the other rancors breaking your mask scent.

Still, some handy tips I've never tried. Thanks.

I will try that, although I don't know how you can "peace" before you are attacked, but it's something to try. My whole point about the 15m is that it gives you an opportunity to a) peace after the aggro, and b) often times escape completely, particularly if you bustrun.

If you peace twice, you go into peace mode which means you wont auto attack, if you dont fight back you shouldnt get DBed in theory

Actually, you can wear +25 mask scent clothes together with armor. All you'll have to forget is the composite armor pants

I wear mabari armor most of the time minus the pants and sometimes minus the helm. It is cheap, it cuts damage in half (actually, by about 54%), and most of all it is easy on the mind. The set I am wearing right now is 97/42/24 with no helm or pants, and only 108/51/88 with the helm but no pants. It also looks good. Matches my black and blue outfit quite well. And it is unsliced armor. I think it is the perfect BE armor when you want something to cut damage while not sapping your mind.

My toon would be uber silly looking in mabari. I prefer to sneak up with the risk factor. Besides, my terrain negotiation food allows me to definitely outrun them. Mutants love to hang out on steep terrain as it turns out. Two are almost always hugging each other.

If I get aggro from MRs I /center and run away. Maybe throw in a warcry to delay 'em while I head out. Peace a few times; they soon give up chasing.

My combat spam tends to look like this:

a mutant rancor tries to hit you, but you evade!
a mutant rancor tries to hit you, but you evade!
a mutant rancor tries to hit you, but you evade!
a mutant rancor misses you!
a mutant rancor tries to hit you, but you evade!

The hardest part is getting to them. Even with my +25 clothes and +10 jawa beer I get detected quite often while walking or even crawling. Current favourite tactic is to walk a metre, wait a second or two, walk a metre, wait, walk, wait, walk etc until I'm within sampling range then stop dead and stay stopped. Takes a while but I got twice as many samples in half as much time last outing using this method. I'll do further testing next time I go out.
