There are 2 main ways to grind up architect. Statues or walls.
Statues are the fastest grind but aren't worth trying to resell. Not enough demand and the market is flooded.
Walls are a ways slower than statues but you can resell them to recoup costs.
If you want the fastest grind possible, then statues are the way to go. You could setup 10 medium minerals on ore and then gems and get the materials you need within a couple weeks. Harvester maintenance would run you in the 250k-400k neighborhood.
But since finances are an issue for you then you might want to do walls and find a market to resell them. You can get ahold of say 44k of ore and 16k metal and grind out 20 walls and sell them for 5-10k credits each depending on your server, then rinse and repeat. You should probably try and find architects interested in buying walls first though to make sure you've got a market and know what people will pay.
Small houses take around 3.3k resources to build. So 5k credits is about1.5 cpu. So it depends on if 1.5 cpu is worth it to you.
Small houses also require 12 sub components so they're a little bit of work to make.
You might find a better market for walls if you shop around.
Factories could also sell some. People generally pay ok for those and you can make them as well as everyone else, there is no expereimentation to impact the quality.
I suspect your friend buying the houses will find they don't want to do it after about 20-30 of them. The housing market on mature servers (those that were around last June) are likely saturated.
I like Pawlins wall idea the best and I have offered that same idea to others.
Luck.
It is commonly agreed amongst architects that walls are the 'best' option for grinding up. You can usually recover the cost of resources and even make a profit by selling them, additionally if you intend to make structures rather than concentrate on furniture then saving as many of those walls as you can will be a worthwhile thing. The one thing structural architects need more than any other is walls, closely followed by ore (which is the main resource used in said walls).
There are other things you can grind your way up with, but for your personal economy I believe there is only one choice, so get yourself some storage, find an architect on your server who is willing to buy your walls, get the macro set up, collect as much grind quality ore and metal as you can lay your hands on and get to work.
Plus if you work with a master architect then you can get free training from them too.
Statues are the fastest grind but aren't worth trying to resell. Not enough demand and the market is flooded. So you'd be looking at throwing away 1-3M worth of resources.
If you want to go that route then look here:

If however you want to do walls then you need 2200 ore and 800 metal per wall or a ratio of 11 parts ore and 4 parts metal.
