Thread: Factories

Honestly, right now, I'd wait until the factory bugs are fixed before going that route. But if you really, really want one....

-- No, you don't need to be an artisan. But having surveying skill helps to find the best places to plant a harvester.

-- Factories are pretty straightforward when it comes to making subcomponents. You need a Food Factory (which is really a Food/Chemical Factory, mislabeled) to make medical stuff. Here's how they work: You'll make your Biological Effect Controller (or whatever) as usual, but you'll make a schematic instead of a prototype item. You then take that schematic, and load it into the schematic slot on the factory (there's an option in the radial menu). You can check and see what resources are needed for the loaded schematic from the radial menu as well; use this to guide yourself on what you should put into the factory's input hopper. (Note that when it says "ount", it's not some mysterious value that nobody understands. It's just "count" misspelled, and it shows you how many more items that particular schematic is capable of manufacturing.) Put your resources in the hopper, make sure the factory has power and enough maintenance funds, and start it running.

-- If everything goes well, you'll get an email message later on telling you that the factory stopped, and how many items it has produced. If that number is less than 100, you know the factory (a) ran out of one of the resources needed, or (b) ran out of power/maintenance. (Note that if you stop the factory before it's through - for example, if you need to take something out of the output hopper - you'll get a 'factory finished' email as well. Another reason it might not be 100.)

-- If you look in the output hopper, you should find 2 crates of finished product. A crate takes up 5 units of inventory no matter how many items are in it. (Very useful for carrying around 50 stimpacks....)

Now, that's the EASY part. The HARD part is getting the factory to make anything that requires subcomponents -- like, say, a stimpack B. Factories just don't take subcomponent items out of factory crates the way they should. You have to "trick" the factory into taking them from crates. (Because the factory input hopper is so small -- only 100 units of space -- just putting the subcomponents into the input hopper manually will only get you so far. Example: For a stim B, you can only put enough subcomponents in to make 32 stims.)

It DOES seem to be possible to get nearly-full runs of stim Bs and Cs. For ideas on that, I refer you to my thread on the subject, entitled "My Personal Factory Work-around (Take 2)". Or something like that.

Again, if you want my real advice -- wait until they fix these things. They're REALLY frustrating to use.

You need to find yourself a 'Food Factory' (the 'and Chemical' seems to be left out). One of these will run you about 40k to 60k credits (less if you supply some/all of the resources).

You do indeed get medical crafting experience from using a factory, however the rate at which you get it is much less than if you were to make the items yourself.

I just made Master Medic and am saving up for a factory so I can make Stim-D's (need factory Biological Effect Controllers).

Another alternative is to buy time or share a factory with another medic/chef.

goto a crafting station...make a schematic...goto your factory..make sure it has power and you have payed maintenence...bring up your radial menu and open the bottom option..let it roll out and there should be schematic option you can select to put your schematic in the factory...then open the radial menu again and select same menuy..let it roll out and you should have some new options..scroll down to the show ingredients needed for items button and it will pop a new screen up showing how much of what minerals you need for the item..multply that number by 100 and break off chunks of the needed material from your inventory..open that same factory radial menu and goto the same botom menu..let it roll out..and there is a button that says open ingredient hopper..do that..place all the ingredients needed for th eitems you want to produce from your inventory into your ingreedient hopper..close all windows

reopen that radial menu again..and goto the same menu ..let it roll out...and select start manufacturing items..and hope it doesnt bug on you....thats all i can help i think

Only other options I saw (I have schems) were Access Input hopper and Access Output hopper...but you said multiply by 100....the default for schems. I had heard that you can type in a larger number for a schem to make many many more, up to 1000. Is this true or no? If not maybe I need to make new schems.

Yes, you can make schems larger than 100 if you type in a number.

The other options (show ingredients and start manufacturing) won't be there until you LOAD a schematic. Just having it in your datapad doesn't do anything.

You don't have to do the math if you don't want to. The factory will just run until you either run out of materials/power/maint, or the schematic hits its limit.

Also keep in mind that schematics require specific materials. You can't make a schematic and toss in just any old aluminum, it has to match.

Finally, for those who were hoping to share your factory, it's bugged just like houses. Giving someone admin access allows them to feed power, pay maint, and access the schematic, but they can't put anything in the ingredient hopper or take it out from the fished product hopper, so you'd have to be there to load the stuff in and take it out when it's done.

Hope this all helps.

How much energy does a factory require to run ever 30 mins?

I'm having the same problems as Emper.....there is no option anywhere to allow me to add the schem to the factory. I have the schems and everything is paid/powered up, I can't figure it out. Anyone else able to help?

Ok, I found the problem......wrong type of factory. I am trying to make stims with an equipment factory, but can't....I can add a schem for my instrument schem i made to test it, but not medicine parts. So, that brings up another problem then; what type of factory to I need to make medicines? Food factory?

whichever tool you use is the type of factory that you need so food/chem factory is the one you want. I can make you a nice droid with all the pesonel crafting stations as well as a level 4 med moduel and level 4 storage which should {when the devs fix them} 25 items

I tried what you said but when I let the thimg scorle down from the menu from options it says ingrdeants hopper and out put hopper but nothing about schematics. I've tried putting the ingredeants in frist and even taking them out again. I've paid up on power and maintanence and even tried reclaiming it setting it up again still the schematics wont come up. I'm sorry to be a burden but if any one can help me out I would be greatful.

Thanks to all those who have already responded.

Ok, Thanks for the info on that. I was trying to make Synthetic cloth with an equiptment and Items factory and I need a Wearables factory instead. Thank you guys for helping me out with that.

May the Force be with you.
