I see two major problems with cloning. I am a master bio-engineer on the Wanderhome server, and find that there's not much substance to the cloning abilities.
I became a bio-engineer specifically because I enjoy cloning, and I am happy with my profession. However, there are many ways in which BEs can become more fun and robust while not overpowering them in any way.
We have to really give it our all, finding the best components and having great experimentation results in order to make a creature that is AS GOOD as the ones in the wild. When I started bio-engineering I thought that under the right circomstances, with experimentation and great DNA, we would be able to make a vastly superior creature.
When we use DNA from a creature it gets no properties from that creature. If I use seething bol crusher DNA in the physique area and Rancor DNA in the aggression while making, say, a Gurreck, that Gurreck should be tougher because of the natural resiliance of the Bol and more aggressive because of the Rancor.
However, I struggle to make ends meet with these AT PAR level creatures.
We also have no way of customizing them whatsoever. We cannot choose their skin or fur colors upon creation, we have no way of accelerating their growth rates, their final physical size, how easy they will be to tame or anything no matter what we do to the profile boxes in the template.

BE is the most challenging crafting profession. The resource gathering is more difficult than the other professions, as you need to not only use harvesters, but also harvest creatures, and in addition harvest DNA from living creatures. No other profession has it so hard on the resource gathering. Clone assembly involves pair matching and a lot of tricks that are not there in the standard run of the mill crafting professions. Not everything can be produced in a factory, and there is a lot of getting out there and putting your life at risk with the critters of the SOE world. It is for these challenges that I picked BE, figuring it would take much longer to grow bored with it than the other professions.
If you wish to compete as a BE, you need to specialize. The best clones are going to come from BE rangers. BE/chefs will make food better than anyone else. BE/tailors have an edge on the tailor market. BE/CH are great for the mount market. The bind? Well to have this kind of edge, you must choose between giving up on a weapon, giving up on a vendor, or just partial mastery in something. THis is the sweet agony of BE, and there is no pat knee jerk build you find in other classes. This is appealing to me.
I figure ultimately I will tire of it, and buy a Holocron and try something new. Right now I am going with MBE/MCH with novice merchant, and artisan up through survey 4.
