Thread: Tricks for Sampling Mutant Rancors

Even with full mask scent clothing, Jawa Beer, and Aroma Screens they still sometimes detect you. The other problem if you're unbuffed, unarmored, and your bike is parked far away is the possibility of death before getaway. Here's my trick for getting up next to them and keeping the vehicle with me.
- Drive around and find some Mutant Rancors.
- When you see a group, target one and do a /waypoint (this is generally a good idea if you need to find them after running). This creates the WP on the Rancor
- Drive a good 200m away from that waypoint, choosing the path of least resistance. That is, no trees or stumps or large groups of NPC mobs. If they're at the base of a slope head up that hill.
- Mask your scent if not already and mount the bike. Turn on the on-screen map (ctrl-M by default). Aim for the WP.
- Go full throttle right into it. Don't let up. You'll see the blue triangle on the screen, head right for it.
- If you hit the WP and there are no red enemy triangles on the screen (yet) then /dismount and stay put.
- Wait a second or two and all the Rancors should pop up around you. You're now standing still (no maskscent check) in the middle of~4 Rancorsand your bike is right there.
I havea ping of about 120 and usually reach the waypoint before the Rancors pop into view. If you come screaming down a hill you'll definitely beat them.If this isa commonly known tactic I apologize. As with everything your mileage may vary.

This is cool.
It's similar to the trick of having someone else attack them and run away, leaving you at the spawn.
Not meaning you hijack your thread, but I was out sampling these last night, and I noticed that if I used the aroma screen thingy after I masked scent my scent got broke as if I didn't use it. When I used it before I hit the mask scent key, I almost never got aggro from scent breaking. Could just be a coincidence.

I've used the bike-lag trick many times, but it never hurts to post a reminder.

Thanks for that tip. I'd noticed it breaking a lot when using the aroma thing. I'll try your trick and see if it works. Of course training the last 2 boxes in scout might help too...lol..I've Had the xp capped for a couple weeks, just forget to get the training.

Nice tactic. I've yet to go after any rancors but I just mastered recently so will be soon. I'll try this out.
Now what are these aroma screens you speak of? I mostly rely on masked scent, which is over 110 buffed and with cloths. Will it reduce the rate of agro on sampling by chance?

never thought of this before but great idea! makes enough sense to me hehe and i'll have to try this next time i go sampling.

woohoo for questionable practices bordering on exploits that help the BEs out for a change! Its not double slicing or FRS farming but I'll take it

They're part of those new loot skill enhancers. It's a +10 to maskscent for 5 minutes with no filling & no side effects. I think you can loot them from Chunkers or Hidden Daggers on Corellia, or find them on the bazaar.

How long does it take to get a sample? And can the creature be in combat while you get it? This sounds like (finally) a good use for the adhesive mesh trap (aside from its use inbeating a hasty retreat). An adhesive mesh trap will stick even a rancor in place, so long as no one is attacking it. Not sure how long the effect lasts (if I resort to using one, I usually don't stick around the immediate area), but I'm guessing it lasts long enough to snag a sample. And if it doesn't, you or your ranger guide (plug!) can always lob another one.
I'm thinking that most of you don't do the traps line in scout, though.

Unfortunately, you cannot sample while it or you is in combat. There needs to be peace or else you might snap your needle

Your methos and his use two different principles. You rely on mask scent. His relies on the rancors not being there when he is. This is not a comment on which one is better, only that they are different.

you cant. Mask Scent/Camo modifiers go into RFP which no item of clothing has multiple slots for. I have shirt/pants then helmet/chestplate/boots/gloves. best combo imo.
