Thread: Implants?

I have read ALOT of books based on Star Wars. One aspect of Star Wars that seems to have been overlooked is Implants.

Implants have been represented in many Star Wars games and books. Examples being; Knights of the Old Republic, and Dengar a Bounty hunter who has modifications in large part to his brain eyes and other "Enhancements" ( REF: "Tales of the Bounty Hunters" by Kevin J Anderson ). These have yet to manifest themselves in SWG.

What are Implants? In my readings and lore of SWG it could simply be termed "Cybernetic enhancements". These could enhance sight, hearing, reflexes, possibly "Jack in" to a computer terminal, provide a link to onboard ship computer systems, and so much more. This would translate to skill mods in SWG. Perhaps Skills that would not normally have a profession to be associated with. The possabilities are limited to game balance, and that is beyond my realm or suggestion at this time.

In order to implement implants into SWG a Profession(s) would have to be identified to produce and apply the implants. There has been talk on various "Combat forums" of "Synergy" ( read: a special combination of professions that work in a way as to be mutually benificial to each other, or that would produce a result together that alone could not be accomplished ). I believe that this "Synergy" could be accomplished through a strong relationship between Doctor and Droid Engineer OR perhaps Bio-Engineer, Droid Engineer, and Doctor.

This addition to SWG would accomplish many "good for SWG" factors. 1) Player to player involvement ( its a social game we play ). 2) A "Star Warsy" feel ( if you're a Movie only fan and cannot relate to the above references then remember Luke's Hand replacement ). 3) Allow developers another creative way to intergrate new ideas into the system without modifying professions that are deemed balanced. 4)Another method to separate you from the rest. A way of making you even more original, and not so much of a "Cookie cutter" template. I'm sure there are more.

"Everyone will want one!" has already crossed your mind. Yes the advantages need to be balanced by equal disadvantages. To balance implants ( and the potential skills / modifications they could provide ) you need to have balancing disadvantages. This could include but not limited to: Skill point Loss ( possibly irreversable ), Extreme resource requirements ( rarity not quantity ), or quest related. I'm sure a more creative mind could derive other options. The point is it could be balanced quite easily.

I'm sure there is much more to consider but, I wanted to throw this out to the forums of the professions I mentioned would likely ( IMO ) be involved. I'm not a crusader, and maybe a more "enabled" individual could forward this to help us all in our common goal - To improve SWG to the point that all who play feel like they bought and played their role in Star Wars.

Please pardon the spelling and grammatical errors.

Thank you for you attention!

I think this is an excelent idea. well, not the one bout permanet skill point loss.... I was thinking it could be balanced with something as simple as the idea of encumbrance. your hand is mechanical incresing your strenght, but reducing your health recovery. you have a mind implat that increases your mind recovery, but decreases your overall mind pool. Maybe if you wanna get more programing intensive, how bout you have an implant that increases your experimentation sucess rate, but reduces your overall craft sucess rate.

The idea of encumbrance also lends to the posability that the implants could be sliced.....

the first reason i think we do not have this feature is that nobody needs cybernetics in game, for when we die we go to a cloner making the newly aquired cybernetic usless. if they would change the cloner to a Bacta tank center, there would me more of a need for cybernetics. when a person dies on the ground things still get decay, but the character has a chance to lose a body part. When the character is in the bacta tank they have a choise to either go cyber or natural. The player if chose natural they are charged a fee equivlent to there combat ability, like500 for a noob and 30k for a master marksman, and they look like there original self due to the bacta and a bit of cloning tech. If the player chose cyber they are charged a smaller amount based on combat ability, 1/4 the cost of natural replacement, and they now have a base cybernetic arm, leg, eye, whatever.A cybered individual then can seek out a cybernetist and have him replace the genaric limb with aupgraded one. later on if theplayer wishes to getrid of thecybered part they visit the bacta center and pay twice the amountfor a natural replacement and they now get a newreal arm.

I see this more a doctor feature than a droid enginner thing, I can see where a DE would need to supply the Doc with parts. for arms they would need a manipulator arm, a motive system, and some electronic modules. for legs they would need a adv. droid frame, adv motive system, and more electronic chips. for a mind enhancement droid brain and sensor module. etc. etc.

I think it could be balanced simply by making a max of 1 implant per person that gives bonuses, but let them have "empty" ones they can use instead, just for modifications to their appearance. Also, tie BE's into this by letting them create "cloned" body parts, if you don't want a robotic one anymore. And make doctors have to attatch everything. I always wanted a robot character, and if you can get fully replaced........well, that'd be my dream. Well, 2 creds from a non DE

I like the idea of a cybernetic enhancement. We have armor and clothing enhancements already, so I think this would be great, without much interference in game play, butwith more of a Star Wars feel to it.

I'd love to see it as something very difficult to obtain, perhaps requiring components crafted by as many different types of crafters as possible on equipment crafted by other crafters, tuned by a ranger, activated by a smuggler, connected by a doctor, and closed by an image designer.
