Thread: Twice last night!!

So last night, I'm on Dantooine doing a harvester run, and I got a /tell from someone who lives in my city, but is in a different guild (we have 3 based out of our city currently). He asked me if I could make him 50 pets of any type, stats didn't matter. I told him that while it technically is possible, it would take a very long time, as each pet requires 5 DNA samples, then the creation of a DNA template, then the creature combine. I told him that my normal price for a non-CH pet is 30k (guild/citizen price, I sell to outsiders for more). He was shocked when I told him that pets can't be cranked out by the crate in a factory. So about a half hour later, I was in Theed, and had a complete stranger walk up to me. Upon seeing my MBE tag, he asked (you guessed it) "Hey Caserc, can you make me 50 pets? I don't care about the stats. How long would that take?" I told him that since I can't make pets in bulk, my price for a crap pet is 30k each with a 1-2 day turnaround, so his 50 pets would cost 1.5 million and be deliverablein about90 days or so. The conversation pretty much ended there.

I've read the posts about this happening to other BEs, but in my months of being a Master BE, I've never had this happen before, and now it happened twice last night.

Funny thing is that an hour later, I was back at my house and answering a bunch of questions from a newbie in my guild who decided to pick up BE for the fun of it. I mean, questions like "What kind of equipment do I need to DNA sample?" and "What's a factory?" So then we get into a discussion about how I make money as a BE. I talked about pet stims, tissues, etc. Partway through the conversation, he says "Hey, I just got an order! This guy wants me to make 50 pets for him. I told him 2k each. That's 100k!!"

Ok, I am not very knowledgable about BE right now, but I am learning. What would someone want 50 crap pets for? is it for Ch training or something? Just curious.

Kind of sad that your giuld mates would go that low when you tried to explain things to them. I find it rather funny. Just wait until they fill the order, they will feel so screwed.

50 crap pets? Sounds like a CH that wants "grinding" pets. A CH that can teach at least 10 things to a pet gets 1000 xp per pet, so 50k xp per "crate." It's incredibly fast experience for a CH that's around 3/3/3/3 in ability, which is why a lot of them search for BEs to make crap pets for them. Personally, I refuse such orders, it's simply not worth the time.

Yes, actually I would think they are for CH grinding. This would not even interest a MBE as you can plainly see from above posts, but is a quite profitable venture for the noob BE. Not only can you make about 5k per creature, but think of the BE crafting exp you will get doing this. At 5k ea and 100xp ea you would make 250k credits and 5000xp, and quality doesn't matter! What a joy for any noob! Lets also count in the sampling exp you would get while doing this. At 100xp per sample, that's about 25000 exp. The only problem I see obviously would be inventory space.

Your mileage will vary. Master BE need not apply.

What did they really want though? Were they just looking for statues or did they want actual combat pets? With muon or, even better, the new chef brandy, I can crank out statues pretty fast. For those, I tend not to charge much and base my prices based on the clone level of each skin, anywhere from 3k at novice to 5k for the master skins.

Funny thing is, if quality doesn't matter, why does it seem like CHs like to approach mainly masters for this? It's not like we'll complete the task any faster than a novice BE. I can see people that want statue pets, because only masters have access to certain skins. From my experience, if someone wants statue pets, they're pretty up front about wanting a statue, and are pretty specific about what creature skin he wants. When someone just says he wants 50 or more "crappy pets," 99.9% of the time, it's for CH grinding.

For novices that want to go into this business, I've said it over and over again, do NOT sell yourself short. Yes, you'll get lots of xp for doing this, but it is very time consuming. Don't let the CHs justify paying you chump change for "crappy" quality pets. You're still using up a lot of resources and time to do this for them. I would say that at least 2K per pet is fair (although I personally think it should be MUCH more, if people want to "buy" their xp, they should be willing to pay a premium for it.)

I have created and sold 100 pets for CH training in the past few days. I can easily create a 'statue' type per per minute (give or take a few seconds) because of a macro I wrote to sample from my Speederbike (shared it in a tips message I posted here a week or so ago) and a combination of Brandy, Fried Ice Cream, and Muon. An MB responded to my post about doing this by telling me I was insane, but I have found it to be quite fun, and relatively easy.

FYI - I sample Rills, Gorgs, Eopies, etc around my house and when my inventory fills, step off my bike and VERY quickly craft the parts and pets using my crafting droid and 4 crafting kits I made for myself. After a few rounds like this, I go back to the house an trasfer the new 'statue' pets to a packpack waiting there. When I reach 50 (in less than 2 hours Iif I don't get distracted), I let the customer know and we make a trade.

I have had, and am currently filling orders for 200 and 500 pets. The money is great, and they are trade grinding meat to me as part of the deal which helps a lot. It's good crafting XP, and I already maxed out on DNA sampling XP in just a few weeks. Oh, and by the way, I have also made about 50 really nice pets (after sampling trips to Dant or Endor) that I am storing in another backpack to eventually sell, or resample from as needed for personal projects.

Your milage may vary, but this has been a fun way for me to get BE crafting XP. MUCH more fun that sitting ther creating a ton of practive items taht jsut waster resources. Thi way I get to help others with their XP, amke some money, and refine my sampling techniques. I see it as all good. =)

The reason the creature handlers approach masters is for speed. A novice is going to fail A LOT trying to get DNA. They are also going to get one maybe two samples. A master will get potentially many more samples in a lot shorter period of time..

If you were to sample the crap out of yard trash you could easily crank out first gen trash gnorts pretty easily. 30K for a yard trash gnort is kind of pricey but I never question how a person runs his/her business.

Way back when, BE's used to craft specific templates for specific animals. You want an eopie? You made an eopie template and put it in an eopie body. Every eopie turned out pretty much the same give or take a little HAM. Making a trillion eopies for a creature handler was a way for a BE to make money since wild animals were so much better. You also have to remember we made pet stims and vita packsby hand. Factories didn't accept bio-engineer schematics. You think we're borked now you should have seen us back then.

Creature handlers are shocked when you explain the new system. Its something they know little or nothing about. They just know you can make babies so they don't have to hunt for them. Tame, train, release. Its eopies on parade

The other reason they are going for masters is that they dont associate the level 4 titles with be. They see Breeder and dont know its a BE. I have gotten requests like this and I jsut turn them to novice BE's ive run into. I have too much fun making sellable pets to spend time making a lot of cheapies.

When I said that I'd charge 30k per crappy pet and deliver 90 days from now, that was sarcasm. I don't feel like obtaining 250+ DNA samples to crank out 50 junk petswhen I could be doing so many other things. Now, if someone comes up to me and says "Hey, can you make a Durni? I don't care what the stats are like, I just want it to follow me around." or "I just want to place it in my house" then if I'm not busy, I'll usually snag 5 samples from yard trash, throw the pet together and give it away. I've never done a bulk order for crappy pets, and don't feel like starting. I just didn't want you all to think that I'm trying to rip people off by charging them 30k for a junk pet. Those of you who said that it would be great for a novice BE are right on the money. A novice BE will get DNA sampling and BE crafting XP and a decent chunk of change. I explained how time consuming this undertaking would be, and the other BE in my guild saw it as a fun challenge. Now, I haven't been back in game since last night, so I'm sure I'll be flooded with more questions as soon as I log on, but that's okay with me, I don't mind.
